This is a wonderful and really wise warm-up routine. Jack’s technique is pristine and worth using as a healthy reference. However, I’d like to note that Jack’s ability to hold his larynx low and his throat open (on a proper manner, because one can do it “pushing” the wrong muscle) requires a lot of neuromuscular connection and years, if not decades, of training/preparation. This is basically the “secret” to a properly emitted operatic sound, and one must not take it as “granted” given a proper breath. You might be able to arrive to that position, but definitely not to hold it. Also, there’s a different school of taught (of the likes of Jack LiVigni and the “old Italian” way of singing) which states that a properly emitted sound will guarantee a good breath/appoggio, and not the other way around (good breath leads to good sound). Thanks for the content, Jack… and congrats for your Met debut!! 🎉

It would be really really really really…….. awesome if someone could post a video on what notes/progressions are being played on the piano to accompany these exercises so they can be played at home and adjusted to people personal voices. I’ve watched hours and hours and hours and hours of videos and not one channel about vocals even spends 1 second covering this. It’s unbelievably frustrating and a huge reason why I don’t bother practicing using these progressions. I’ve watched enough videos to know that vocal coaches and teachers use the same note patterns so would someone please for the love of god go over these!

Opening statement WRONG. All string instruments can slide between notes! (Obviously, in imitation of the voice).

And what about slurs, where the finger is added (or, as the lady says, removed revealing the lower one) without stopping the bow??

It’s more complicated on fretted instruments (like the guitar).

A violin is not a mechanical instrument. It doesn't have hammers or levers or pistons or anything of the sort. So the opening statement is correct.

This warm-up would kill me at my current stage of development. There's no way I can sing up to a G 4 this early in a warm-up without grabbing in my throat. You don't seem to have any issues with the passaggio, but it's important to let people know that not everyone can just start off by banging away at it and expect to get healthy results. You are clearly a more advanced singer and should say so.

Hey there, Thanks for the feedback. You’re absolute right that maneuvering the passaggio is tricky and everyone comes with different levels of training etc. If you watch the whole video on tonebase I make it very clear that if anything seems uncomfortable to stop what you’re doing, take a break and go back to “easy”. Easy is best when it comes to warm-up and if you feel like you’re struggling you’re right that you should take a step back and go back to the basics of breath, open throat and releasing tension, this is easiest in the lower/middle part of your range. Hope that helps and sorry if this short clip got you in knots.

It can't kill you if you follow it step by step; plus this training is best for classical lyric voices, if you are used to sing pop music you might have issues trying to change your technique.

WHAT THE HELL this lady is a genius😭 i've never been able to accept that the portamento is the true way to achieve "legato" in singing because i was first a violinist, and sliding my finger between notes is not legato...

It certainly IS! As a lifelong concert artist, when playing cantabile ("in a singing style") I like to slide imperceptibly softly between notes

Also he seems to be confusing vibrato with the harmonics produced by a well positioned voice.

@@mav030 ALL notes (except tuning forks, synthesisers, and sometimes the low notes of a flute) produce the upper partials you call harmonics. It is the varying strengths of these that give each instrument it's characteristic sound. (Manchester University 1954, non-optional acoustics course. I learned far more about sound production and bowing from scientists in white coats at the Institute of Technology than the meaningless ill-informed guff from most of my teachers.) Keith Ramsell. Absolute nonsense and an unnecessary comment. This may be an emergency solution for amateur choirs, but correct intelligible articulation in singing is out of all proportion to a closed throat. In this example, as a native German speaker, you can barely understand a word, and in the end it's pure laziness and incompetence on the part of the singer to believe that you don't have to articulate properly or that you would lose sound quality. The throat only closes if the articulation tools in the mouth are not completely independent of the phonation on the vocal folds. But if they affect each other, we have a dysfunction and the voice cannot sound free. Too bad, this new series started out really promising, but now it's complete rubbish. Let's hope for something better...
