Can not thank you enough. This is the best video I've seen. It's a rainy day, so I wanted to look up some videos before I went outside. Way more information than I would've been able to figure out on my own in the driveway. Stay well my new friend!

We just did this. the thermostat was easy about $39 online without the housing. There is a video on how to replace it. also on removing the hose from the thermostat we noticed a hole in the hose. that was an easy fix too.

Thanks for this video. I don’t have that problem on my Sonic, but I just happened to be scrolling through random videos on KZitem and this one caught my attention. So I’ve gone ahead and saved it in case one day I experience this issue. I have a Sonic Repair video folder I keep videos like this in. Thank you 😉👍🏼🔧

There’s a low speed and high speed relay for the radiator fan, and fuses for each, hence the 30A (low) and 40A (high) fuses. The radiator fan plug has three terminals, where the middle is the ground and the outside two are-you guessed it-the low and high speed power inputs. The low speed power terminal actually has a resistor in series (to create the low speed). You can check the fan’s low-ground and high-ground circuits with a multimeter to rule it out.

The thermostat is not electric and will open. The fans may not come on if the sensor is bad. You could have switched the relays from another spot and see if the fans came on, or if there was a problem with the spot that you switched to. The actual temperature sensor that controls the fans is in the side of the engine next to the thermostat housing.

Thank you so much for this video Russel! My 2018 Chevy Sonic (sedan) was not blowing heat. I was researching the topic. I checked the coolant level (it was normal), no leaks from hoses, I was researching replacing the thermostat on youtube and found this video of yours! I went straight to the autoparts store for that 40 amp, low profile J box fuse (less than $5). That white plastic tweezer in the fuse box us the fuse puller. It did not work for the J box size although. Once I removed the old one, I replaced it with the new fuse as you did. Heater came right back on!!! Man you saved me easy $300 plus. Thank you!!!

Also fuse 23, ECU, mine a 2013 TM Holden Barina was blown. Fan not working after replacing Thermostat housing and block and coolant temperature sensor. As the Thermostat (electronic), interacts with MAF sensor and ECU, When a fuse blows, you have an open circuit. I resolved these issues without a manual or technician. Just 40 years experience and watching KZitem tutorials. However, I had to use my own diagnostics process to resolve the undocument issues. Every incident has it's own anomalies or ideo-syncrasities

So I was watching my fan and it was on but it was turning slowly. Then I tried the fuses swap but now it’s not even turning on 🤦♂️ any tips. Oh and the sensor you where talking about on the tstat like the hole sensor and part of the tstat comes of showing the internal 2 red cables. I’m so confused.

What about the water pump itself? Could that also fail? Usually it leaks when bad because the front water seal wears out, but can the pump itself go bad?

It absolutely could be a defective part. But as you'll see in the many comments, it seems its a hard thing for shops to diagnose, and they do their best, but sometimes it's a as simple as a relay or fuse. I suggest you check the fuses and relays first, if that doesn't help, then take it to a shop for their opinion.

I've replaced the engine coolant water outlet, the thermostat, some radiator hoses, valve cover, and am getting ready to change the coolant temperature sensor. I didn't run across anything else mentioning these fuses and relays so I'll check them for sure. Ill never buy a "economical" chevy again they are pieces of @#$%. I have a 2012 Sonic (1.8) which overheated this past summer. I suspected it was the resistor for the fan which is right at the plug for it. With no actual proof of what it could be I simply cut the resistor off and wired a relay and a switch to the fan 0 $ as I had the relay and switch on hand. It's not the best situation because you have to be aware of when to turn on the switch. I am in Canada, so overheating season doesn't come often.

That “sensor” is actually part of the heater control circuit-it’s basically a way of electronically controlling the mechanical thermostat. The coolant temp sensor is located closer to the firewall on these cars. Good call on checking the fuses/relays and fan! My wife’s Sonic is acting up and I haven’t looked at those yet.

Hey, I don't suppose you would know if the thermostat rests in the open position? Like if you turn the car off, do the thermostat open?
@andrewburris1767
Жыл бұрын
@@keylay9453 the mechanical portion of the thermostat is temp dependent, so it will stay open on a hot engine, closed when the engine cools to a certain temp. The heater control circuit allows the computer to have more fine control of that open/close temp for better fuel efficiency and emissions related things

Very helpful video. I had a slightly different issue which is my radiator cooling fan was only working on the high speed setting or not at all. Took the car to a specialty AC/radiator place and they said significant corrosion on the fan motor had disabled the low and medium settings. Replacement of the radiator fan came to $224 including labor (summer 2020) which was significantly lower than I'd expected. A possible cause seemed to have been a very slow leak of coolant from the radiator overflow bottle, which was cracked. I had that replaced later....one of those rare cases where the Dorman component is clearly better than the GM one. I agree, though, fuse and relay stuff is more common than what I had.

If you have checked the fuse and it's ok, and the circuit has power, then you've reached the end of the work I did to find my son's issue. I would not recommend jumping past the panel or adding a ground before you have taken it to a qualified mechanic. Share with them what you ahve already found and maybe they will be able to identify the root cause. Over the years there have been many replies to this video from folks that went deeper than I did. Maybe they can offer some help. Sorry I cant help you on this.

@@russelmccombs I checked all the fuses and replaced it even if it is good. Just to rule out the fuses. I bypassed the load circuit to the ac clutch and the clutch is engaging. I know that I have a good ac clutch. It's just the relay control circuit does not reach ground.
