Don’t bounce on the bottom of the outboard because you will break the Hall and if you break it you bought it. I had an 15 year old nitro 1995 bass boats Where the transom had become so soft, I thought that I could push my thumb through it if I tried. I took the motor off, and the transom was completely delaminated from the bolt holes that held the engine on down to the bottom. I thought that I might as well try and fix it before junking the boat. I bought an aluminum plate that was bent at ninety degrees so tat it would sit over the top of the transom and cover the back on the outside and a rectangle plate for the inside then drilled bolt holes through it . I mixed up the fiberglass and poured it into the delaminate transom and them put the plates on and used the bolts to pull it back together. The next day I removed the bolts and reinstalled the motor with the plates still in place. Ten years later I had to replace the jack-plate and the transom was still solid. I sold the boat last year after explaining everything to the buyer. It was cheap and will probably last him a long time.

Yeah I realized after I posted this that recommending standing on the lower unit was probably the wrong way of putting it. While I do exert a lot of force on the lower unit with my foot, maybe standing on it and bouncing isn't the best advice. This boat had a lot more issues than just a bad transom, glad you were able to unload the Nitro. Appreciate you watching and your comments. Pepper's

Not trying to be smart but two things come to mind hearing everyone trying to get their boats back in shape. Quality wax at least once a year and quality boat cover. I wax once a year with Jescar Ultra Lock plus. My boats 13 years old wax annually keep covered outside and use it all Summer long still looks brand new. Best of all the Jescar 16oz bottles 35 bucks and usually I can get at least 6 top to bottom waxes out of a bottle. Beads water similar to ceramic.

Do you use 220 sandpaper and where do you recommend to find a good deal on a buffer machine? How did you apply the 3M with a paintbrush or did you spray it on? Why does it look so dusty before your buffing it in this video? Thank you.

What if it’s past the point of just using the restorer. The flake and color has faded badly. What do you do then?
@peppersboatspa7947

If you can feel the flake, it's too late. Wet sanded ding will only turn it white. Your option is to live with it, or re-gelcoat the boat.

I'm trying to bring back the color on a red 2017 Fiberglass Winnebago RV. It's built using T60 gelcoat panels and the best I can do is get from chalky white to a dark pink. Even then, I still see hazing and discoloration in the surface ... especially when the sun hits it directly. It should be a fire engine red (original color). I've used Meguires and Wizards heavy oxidation remover and I'd say it gets it to about 85-90%. That remaining 10-15% is about driving me crazy. I'm wondering if the oxidation isn't getting buffed into the gelcoat surface. Any tips would be appreciated.

It depends on the depth of oxidation, but on average I start with 800, followed by 1500, then 2500 or 3000. I use a wool pad for buffing.

Is there any way to bring back a gel coat on a painted part that is bumpy at all? Just got a 76 astroglass and I want to bring it back to life but the top blue color is bumpy as hell
@peppersboatspa7947
Жыл бұрын
Send a couple close up pics to [email protected] and I'll take a look. Typically an old boat like that with "bumps" is the glitter coming to the surface through wear, but once in awhile it can just be old as heck and just need a good wet sanding.

@peppersboatspa7947

If it's chipping, then someone sprayed automotive clearcoat on it. Boat gelcoat contains the color pigment within the mixture and may spider crack over time, but will never flake. Only thing you can do is grind it all off, and regelcoat the entire boat.

Fact is however that a bad transom isnt the end of the world for a boat. And if it was you wouldnt have bought this one. Yes its best to realize it before you actually buy the boat so that the price can be negotiated accordingly.

My 1985 garage-stored Champion 184 has original transom. Boat dealers did reseal the four transom mounting bolts two separate times, (1) different motor, (2) add jack plate/steering cables needed replaced. Champ has been to boat fiberglass repair shops four times over 37-years for different impacts, but not one transom problem.

I have a 1995 ranger. I’ve been told the gel coat on the gunnels is too far gone. They said if I sand it, it will turn the edges of the metal flake and make it look dull and then cant get it to shine again ever. So how do I fix the gel coat on top edges of the gunnels without damaging the metal flake?
@peppersboatspa7947
Жыл бұрын
If it's truly gone, correct, sanding will turn the glitter white. Fixing it would require a very light wet sand to remove the roughness, then spraying several coats gelcoat the boat with clear gelcoat. Then several more rounds of wet sanding.

I have almost exactly the same boat. After I wet sanded it, the red flake really lightened up (almost pinkish). Will the gel coat restorer that you used help with that or am I looking at having to have it respected?
@peppersboatspa7947
Жыл бұрын
If your metal flake has been affected then its been sanded too deep and would need to have a gelcoat job done. The restorer is used when there has not been any wax on the finish for years. Gelcoat is porous and the restorer is drawn into the pores, sealing the gelcoat. After its been applied then its followed up with normal polishing and waxing. I hope this helps out.

Why do they still put plywood in fiberglass boats ? I know, I know, it's cheap.
@peppersboatspa7947
Жыл бұрын
Marine plywood, when laminated and sealed properly is as strong and durable as any other material. During the 90s it was about keeping cost low and selling boats so transoms didn't get much attention until the early 2000s when Champion, Skeeter, and a few others started developing issues and customers started having to spend a lot of money to have them repaired. This transom I'm doing is sealed all the way around with epoxy, and resin where the glass is applied. This transom should last for many, many years to come as it is better than what the manufacturers used back then. Hope this info helps a little bit.

Wish I had watched this before I purchased my first boat a few months back. I mean I knew it was going to be a project boat but the one item I didn't want to have done is the transom. After seeing this tutorial it's glaringly obvious that it had transom issues. I know it can be fixed but was hoping to have it on the water a bit sooner rather than later. I'll definitely be looking through your videos for tips on repair.
