The new TV-series „All creatures great and small“ was extremely popular in Hungary recently too, but previously I red Mr. Herriot's several books also and I loved his writing style, and sense of humor. And I read them again and again and still enjoy them very much. Thank you Mr Harriot where ever you are, I hope you feel we love you.

I've never seen the movie adaptation of the books, just the BBC originals & the current series. Is the Anthony Hopkins & Co. movie any good? And thank you for the great upload. The original show has seen me through decades of winter nights and, when I was a boy, I watched it religiously with my grandmother on the BBC every week. How we loved it all! I bought the books for my family, and even my daughter (at 22) just loves them. It's truly incredible to think how much the man's books have been read around the entire planet! It's earthy & universally endearing (and enduring) stuff. I've honestly never watched a show/series (the BBC versions) that moved me more. ♥

When I was first dating my boyfriend he picked me up in his old truck and he had All Creatures Great and Small on cd. We both adored his books as kids. He used to just drive me around and we’d listen to Alf’s stories. We’ve been together six years now. We still adore all of his work.

Growing up in the Midwest the US I was the only kid that I knew that watched public television which was mostly shows from the UK, I found the shows being very interesting and entertaining. All Creatures Great Small was one of the best shows. I worked on Dairy farms as a child and could relate.

How nice to find this documentary! Thanks for sharing. His wish as they started to make the series back in the 70's was that they would stick to his books. I am not quite sure that he would have liked the new 2020's version as quite a number of changes have been made.

Yes, I've noticed that. The real Mrs Wight was a very good cook, she never called off a wedding with someone else as she chose Alf in the first place. I'm enjoying the new series, but I agree that Alf Wight wouldn't be happy with the changes.

As I read his books again for the upteenth time, I'm wondering how many times I've actually read them. I'm 36 and I believe I began reading them when I was 6 or 7. So about 30 years and I read them at least once a year. Which means I've read these books at the very least 30 times. And that makes sense because I know them by heart and although there are no plot surprises anymore there is always the wonderful feeling of "coming home" and a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation...every time! They've got me through some very tough times and continue to do so today. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

An interesting and invaluable slice in time. So much more would come, including more books, recordings, a wildly popular multi-season (in American parlance) television series that aired in Britain and on the PBS network in the United. States, and toward the end of his life an OBE knighthood, of which he was very proud. I’m so glad an English publisher had the sense to accept his work for publication and that the president of St. Martin’s Press, a very esteemed publisher in the U.S., picked up his book for the publication rights in the U.S. and made him globally popular. We toured the Yorkshire Dales and the people we were traveling with hadn’t heard of “James Herriot,” so we gave his veterinarian museum in Thirsk a pass on our travels through the region, to my ever-lasting regret.

Though it's a Scottish accent he was not Scottish. He was born in England of English parents. He was English - a fact his son tells us about in his own book 'The Real James Herriot'. The family moved from England to Scotland so that his father could find employment, and his mother went back to her home town (Sunderland) in England so that he could be born there. She then took him back to Scotland three weeks later. He spent the next twenty or so years living in Scotland, hence the accent.
