Ive just realised pusher 3 is a lot like the final part of goodfellas where the main character is trying to solve many things for his family reunion while taking care of criminal activities

Funny thing is, Balabanov’s Brother 1 and 2 were created solely to make money too. Balabanov needed money to shoot more artsy movies that nobody wanted to finance

I just remember darkness of the scene at the end , drinking coffee and cigarette after survived that horrible night while looking at the empty swimming pool, that scene still explaines alot without any words. trilogy or movies like thoose will never be made again, at least not in this civilization. nicolas winding refn's best work.

I also highly recomment the book adaptation of the first movie, if it is translated into English; released in 2005 it gives more of an introspective narrative from Frank’s point of view and further elaborate on his backstory with Tonny, Vic and Milo

So glad you talked about these. Not only do I love Refn’s red carpet poses, but I love these films too. The brutality, grit and realism of it all, makes for one of the best trilogies I’ve ever seen. I’m so glad he knew better than too continue Frank’s story, because II and 3 are some of the best gangster films I’ve seen in recent years.

So glad I stopped watching this 3 mins in and watched all the movies. What an amazing trilogy and so much different from what I expected. Its so beautiful how each story has so much to tell and honestly has something everyone can relate to. Each movie has its own focus and message about life.

I'd much rather watch any of the Pusher films again than any of Winding Refn's subsequent films.

Pusher 1 is one of the hardest gangster films ever made... which is why I found the change of tone to the second film a bit jarring because the second Pusher is more or less a dark goofy comedy. It's a good movie, but I missed the adrenaline of the first one.

Superb analysis of the most important crime films ever made, who are not at all about crime, but about addiction, insecurities, depression, anxiety, love, childhood traumas, social pressure, injustice, relationships and many other things of simply being human in troubled world.

I just finished watching the 3rd one. I don’t think I can pick a favourite between 2 and 3. Both are masterful in their own ways. Each of the 3 are amazing films. Haven’t seen a trilogy in a long time that is so consistent and builds with each entry.

I tend to avoid video essays on movies because most of the time I don’t feel like I can trust them unless whats being told is coming from the filmmaker of so film. But as a huge Safdie brothers fan I’ve been drawn to this video since I saw the thumbnail. Something about COMPASSION over a still of one of their films drew me in. Now I’m glad I watched it. I learned about character development in their films in a way that only feels honest. Great video, thank you for creating 🙏

at 4:00 you criticise it for being amateur on the technical front, that's on purpose, you should probably go back and read the Dogme manifesto - it's not just about handheld cameras but one of the rules is also that you shouldn't be doing lightning set-ups e.g. you use the natural lightning for the scene.

Russian here. The chances that "Brother" by Balabanov could have been inspired by the first Pusher is near 0. I'm in the film industry, from the same city as the movie director and I have been old enough when it's premiered back in 97. You have to remember it was still pretty much a VHS time. There were very limited range of films that would apper on VHS over here - mainly English language films. Euro films were not very popular till around 1998-99. Plus every movie needed to be translated and overdubbed - either professionally or by pirate translators at home. Nobody would waste their time and money to translate and release some random Danish drug film. Other topic were popular, Denmark was not seen as a major film country, nobody had any interest in Danish films back then (1998 onwards it changed drastically). There is little chance Balabanov could have seen the movie - it simply wasn't available till much later - even in the film industry and film buff circles. In May 1997 "Brother" premiered in Cannes. Pusher premiered in Aug 96. Theres 0 chance for a pirate premier screengrab to have had surfaced in Russia back then, cause it just wasn't of any interest to anybody. So to watch it in Russia one would have had to wait till VHS release (happened usually much later, sometimes month later or years later but not sure about this particular release), someone had to bring a physical copy to Russia (no broadband, remember?) then wait for the pirate translated release. Then Balabanov would have to come up with the concept, write out the script, FIND THE FINANCING, organize the production, film it and edit it - and it was filmed with the actual physical film, that you had to cut and paste on the editing table. It's not exactly as quick as Adobe Premier 😅 And all of this must have had happend in the 8 months between the premiers. Hardly possible back than, in the world without highspeed readily available broadband Internet and high functional mobile phones. That is my assesment as someone who had been there and then - in the moment. I used to be both a film buff (watched everything available), a VHS trader and a film industry person and I don't remember anyone anywhere ever mentioning Pusher till 99-2000 or later. The theme and atmosphere are probably similar cause it the theme and the atmosphere of the times - the 90ies were equally shit and drab everywhere. The color scheme is similar cause both movies are shot on cheap celluloid.
