the criticism against Ariel is textbook victim blaming: "oh she lost her voice for a man" she was literally manipulated and groomed by ursula to do it that was the point ..

quick! Show this video to the feminists who hate Barbie and will call you a fake feminist and a (internalized) misogynist for liking Barbie (and Disney princesses and anything seen as feminine). just like that Peggy woman who wrote that Cinderella slander book. you’re right. those people who think “feminine women = anti women’s rights” have an incredibly damaging way of thinking

Here's my question why is Ken just an afterthought in Barbie's world? In the beginning he had his own friends, Allen, Brad and Curtis,his own car and his own career, doctor and house. I thought they missed out on an opportunity to create characters of substance in the male strata
@lowbatterycos
Жыл бұрын
I honestly think it's to do with what young girls lives revolve around, their friends (who often happen to be girls) and their family, which is a lot of what modern barbie focuses on. So really I think that why ken is a after thought because boys are often an after thought for girls (a generalisation). Barbie is trying to sell to girls so they sell to what they are interested in ie: a lot of female characters.

I think what kids like about beauty in hyperfemining cultures is the freedom of self-expression, the splash of colors and sparkles, the DRAMA. Like jeeee what's wrong with being beautiful? IT'S FUN. Slaying at what you wanna do while looking gorg is what I think most girls dream of. It's why we like fiction with colorful worlds where characters look all kinds of ways. People act like you can be either pretty OR professional and it's just DUMB.

I find after watching the movie that people really missed the point of it and just criticise Barbie still because it's what gets more likes. The movie has a strong message of hiw Barbie isn't the creator of the issues she represents like bodu dysmorphia, but a projection of societal issues that already exist.
@andrewlewis1588

I think the reason why Barbie and other hyper feminine characters get criticized so heavily it’s because people look at it from face value, and they think that just because a woman or a girl wears make up and cute clothes that they can’t be smart, or they can’t be strong. which is obviously not true women and girls can be feminine and still be smart and strong.

Very interesting, yeah I wasn't trying to say GI Joe is not diverse more just pointing out the disparity between the way girls and boys toys are criticised, GI Joe and Barbie released their first black character around a similar time however Barbie is the brand that 'took forever to release a black doll'

I want to say the following: Before Barbie there were other dolls that were supposed to be "adults", not just Bild Lilli. I will note that some of the european/european dolls released aaround 18-20 centuries did have "baby faces", but that is because of trends in female beauty (similar situation is happening with 2D female characters nowadays). Despite that, to say/imply that there were no adult-loooking dolls is wrong. I also think we need to consider the fact that the majority of dolls nowdays represent mostly (if not only) different versions of hyperfeminine aesthetics (even most Barbie career dolls do) is not a good thing. While hyperfemininity is underepresented in real life, in the realm of toys it is the opposite way, and what good does lacking actual diversity in terms of aesthetics do for the kids and adults at any stage of life? What does it tell them and us? What will children take away from mostly being exposed to toys, made with one particular easthetic in mind? Much think about..
@lowbatterycos
Жыл бұрын
From my research the dolls I found that were adults were also marketed towards adults, Barbie was the first adult women marketed towards kids, there was a lot of controversy about giving a doll with an adult female body to children- from the research I did I couldn't find any dolls with adults bodies being marketed to children. And I agree, as I said in the video I do agree that Barbie should represent different aesthetics, I would kill for some of the dolls to wear trousers every once a while- like I'm still praying they bring back tom boy skipper, but I still think showing kids multifaceted hyper femininity is important.

@@lowbatterycos Hi! Thank you for the reply. First of all, just to prove my point regarding "mature dolls", I recommend checking out a video called "How Mattel rewrote toy history to put Barbie on top' by mjtanner. I found it pretty recently (days before watching your defense video to be exact) and, as a doll enthusiast myself, think the creator did a good job presenting their findings (some of which happen to be relevant to the topic of this defense video and my previous comments). There are, of course, plenty of over resources, which contain more information on the topic. Right now this one seems like a better option to reference. I also want to put a disclaimer about some resources, that mjtanner has linked to be where she took the information from: my browser deems some to be unsafe for use, which is why I recoomend to be cautious, if you decide to check them out. Secondly, I am glad to here a more coherent point in regards to the idea of presenting different aesthetics to kids. While the defense video does feautre some points impling this concept, I expected it to be discussed more than it was, so I decided to metion this in my ocmment. Anyway, overall, I want to say this was a pretty neat video. It has its flaws, but I did enjoy it! Will keep an eye out to see what future videos you may create)

Or to look up all of barbies poc dolls from the past. And barbie is and always was more diverse than Bratz. Bratz having oh Chinese Mexican Black isn't super diverse ots the exact same backgrounds everyone uses and the side characters are the dame cultures too. Barbie at the time of Bratz in the main group had Barbie, Teresa Rivera who's Latina, black Christie and later Nikki O'Neill, Lea Bing who was from Macau, and Kayla Maltby who could be any race since it was never consistent. Bet people have no clue where Macau even is, but it's an Asian country nobody represents unless they're using it for casino scenes... so to have a doll from there without there being gambling references is great. Bratz also doesn't have disabled characters or different body types. Becky the wheelchair girl? Bratz is too much of a pussy to even try disabilities for their dolls

I love Barbie dolls. Unfortunately I recently learned about the terrible conditions in Mattel’s factories overseas. Apparently lots of female workers were mistreated to produce the dolls and it made me feel guilty for collecting. Idk if I will buy anymore new Barbies in the future. Buying vintage ones off eBay is more responsible because it only supports USPS and an individual seller, not the abusive system Barbies come from.

I know what you mean, but I think that's sadly the nature of consuming- almost all toy companies (and many other produced items) don't have great ethical practices. I love this so much! I love Barbie because she is both feminine and able to do/be anything. It's sad how femininity is often seen as weak or bad. I like being girly, but I'm not weak for it. So what if I like to dye my hair, wear dresses, and do my makeup? I don't dress up all the time, but I always do it when I need a confidence boost. It makes me feel good. I love to dress up as a princess even as an adult, but I'm still working towards my own career. I can do both

Francie was actually Barbie's cousin, and she was a white British girl, the black one is a black version of Francie. Also I think you should make a History of POC Barbie series focusing on each race for a different ep (like, Latina Barbies, Asian Barbies, Black Barbies, Indigenous Barbies, etc.) Also you need to know: Raquelle's not and never was Asian, that is a headcanon that got spread online as fact when it's not. And several Asian friends I have the backgrounds for: Kira's Vietnamese, Rockers Dana (Becky Sensation is the same character just renamed) is Korean, Lea is from Macau, Renee was introduced as Japanese but was later changed to Chinese in Dreamhouse Adventures, Tammy, Raquelle's replacement is Chinese too And you should include movie and TV show characters too

Oh boy, Barbie and other girl stuff, Man I hate gender norms. Hi, Trans girl here: As a kid I loved genderswap episodes, loved watching Winx Club, always bonded with the female cahracters, really wanted to watch three musketeers based on the adds I saw on telly and spent way to long at night looking at the dolls section of the argos catalogs. I always loved this stuff but resisted for so damn long. Now I just don't care and I love what I love. Watching the Barbie movies always makes me feel better when I'm feeling down and I'm so hacked off I waited so long to start watching them. (Diamond castle is my favourite, hands down.)

Honestly dream LGBT Barbie two pack: Liana and Alexa from diamond castle getting married. For everyone who has no idea what I'm on about: Barbie and the Diamond Castle from 2008 stars two girls who live alone in the woods growing flowers, playing with each other. Over the course of the film they are protected from bad magic with literally heart shaped necklasses they make for each other, get dragged away from the pair of obligitory male characters by a literal sparkling rainbow brigde, Throw yellow roses to the boys (Yellow roses mean friendship for anyone curious) and finally get princess dresses in the Lesbian and Bi flag colours. They are so god damn gay and it would be perfect if they made them offically canon as oposed to obvioussly Canon.

this video!!!!!! omg!!!!!!! ok im sorry im gonna write a book in here, that cj the x video inspired me too but unfortunately i just do nooottt have the device storage to make videos about things like this!! everything about this is so real though omg. that point you made abt how people talk about barbie like she's influencing kids to be all hyperfeminine is like ohhh my god. i'm trans myself and i feel like it ironically crosses with the horrendously terfy misconception that afab trans folks are trans to "escape femininity" when it's like.. ok i don't consider myself a girl but i can still adore and enjoy barbie and not be a girl or personally take interest in wearing a dress! like i won't brush off all criticism, sure i had some body issues even prior to puberty and dysphoria and all that and maybe dolls could've been part of that but i think it was much more that in conjunction with every other piece of media that stigmatized weight and such. but like coming out the other end of my weird anti-doll phase i had during my preteen/most of my teen years getting back into barbie, mlp, monster high and so on has been so incredibly healing. i don't get the vitriol over something as simple as a doll. i hated pink for years but coming back to it it just feels warm and safe and makes me happy, and toys were and still are something incredibly healing as well. as far as the movie goes i totally agree with you. i'll try not to spoil just in case. i did love it as like, a sort of metaphor for growing up and it definitely hit me with some hyperspecific nostalgia but it felt kind of out of touch with what barbie is and looks like today. like even as someone who does not identify with femininity (even as i express myself in a way that reads as feminine!) i just wish it wasn't so scared of that sort of expression. like it treated that "girly" pink playful campy aesthetic and being an adult in the real world as an either/or thing and it was pretty sad to see especially as a person who exists as an adult and does both. i could probably keep talking but this is already a super long comment but if anyone ever wants to talk abt barbie or ponies or something i'm torchlightglow on instagram :') ALSo i love that ginger doll with the pink and blue dress (not bloom though even though she's pretty too), who is she? :0 <3

This is an amazing video essay! I completely agree that dolls are more than just a girl in a pretty dress! I am a doll collector on the Autism Spectrum (I have an Aspergers diagnosis), and my dolls are like friends to me and give me a sense of companionship unlike anything else! They help me deal with my anxiety, depression, creativity, and self-expression even! I even have certain personal comfort dolls, currently my Veronica and Naomi Storm dolls, and I am so sick of people in my own family calling them "slutty" or acting like they are just "mean girls". To me, they are my best friends, my doll daughters, a means of self-expression, escapism, and artistic inspiration, and I am intensely protective of them. I can't help but smile every time I look at my Veronica and Naomi dolls or see them in the Rainbow High show, and they make me feel mysteriously happy in a way that I simply cannot explain or fully understand. I see them as so much more than just "evil twins" or "mean girls" and they have inspired me so much that I even created an 11x14 painting of them as well as making a custom of their Jeep from the Rainbow High show! Inspiration like that can not possibly be a bad thing!🖤💜

this was a FANTASTIC essay! hyper feminine or feminine things in general have been the only brands or things under a lot of scrutiny throughout and definitely today where the only idea of a strong woman has been a hyper masculinised version of an already existing character which contributed more to the issues with femininity and body issues than the doll itself; i recently realised how weird this was so your video kind of showed up in my recommended at the right time! for me at least, monster high, barbie and mlp were the big three things that allowed me to express myself through childhood and it was honestly really cool the amount of diversity in personality and type that the female characters had that I never really saw outside that hyper feminine space. i also find that kind of scrutiny with traditionally feminine movies like cinderella (which was my favourite growing up) and the little mermaid like you mentioned - especially watching those older movies today and seeing how strong those women were, same thing with various Jane Austen novels (I know this a very weird segue but trust me, it makes sense). either way, this was an awesome watch and your doll collection didn't go unnoticed btw, it looks AWESOME - I'm rebuilding my childhood collection and have a small display. Really cool and you just gained a new subscriber!
