The Clans ruined the table top game. Made for great lore, but the game balance was never as good after the Clan tech was introduced. Too much power creep.

Battletech was my gateway drug to miniature wargames and high-complexity board gaming, but finding people to play with in college was difficult, and until this month I ihadn't played the tabletop game in 30 years. So happy to see the resurgence the game is seeing right now. And after years of 40k prices, being able to buy a full force for $25 is refreshing. As a side note, looking at the Beginner Box on the Catalyst website, the cover art is different now, but the contents appear to be the same. They may have updated the box art as part of the Mercenaries release push.

A Game of Armored Combat is all you need for 2-4 players. (60) Clan Invasion if you want a good Inner Sphere vs Clan romp. (50) Alpha Strike for additional IS and Clan mech and the simpler rules. (80) That's it. Alpha Strike and Clan Invasion are optional. No need for an 18 minute video.

I have original BattleTech, (AND a copy of BattleDroids the original name and rules for the first year it was out). Also tons of books from the next 20 or so years. All the real classic stuff. Made by Ral Partha and its adjuncts. Why do I need to upgrade to a whole new game? (and spend hundreds of dollars for the same rules). And hundreds of mech, vehicles, troops, and elementals (Back in the day when they cost about $2.5 and not the godawful prices set today).

I heavily disagree first off all don’t buy anything from Catalyst. You need 3 recorcess to play battletech. 1. The rulebook “Total Warfare” used or “used” pdf 2. Megamek a download from their website. This is one of the greatest community recorcess developed. From it you can print record sheets of any unit, and even search them through parameters like equipment or movement. (You can finally alot of interesting new toys this way!) megamek itself will alow you to play but does the rolling for you. Not a grest tool to learn but its other recourses such as sheets a mechlab, and even tools to run a campaighn are great! 3. Miniatures, Iron wind Metals known as Ral Partha overseas of the USA. Have all the old prints! And not a cent goes to catylist but instead straight to tops, otherwise I recommend printed minis or buying used!

@weslaydragons749

The successions wars TRO is a great spot to learn about all the mechs you are likely to have but not necessarily needed for gameplay- it's a fluff piece. The succession wars PDF sheets are an option but many players use either flechs or megamek to get their sheets (I'm a fan of flechs because they include hit tables and melee attack modifier). sheets.flechs.net/ megamek.org/

@@bwiggs13 There's a website called Master Unit List that has a database of all the mechs and variants that have been published over the decades, which era they belong to, whether they rely on Introductory (introtech), Standard, Advanced, or Expirimental rules, and even which factions had access to them. The TRO is solid, but it doesn't have everything that's potentially available.

battletech has been using the same rules for 40 years. while 5 editions have been released, only a couple of clarifications have been made. if you are getting started, the 'A Game of Armored Combat' is the best value. it will teach everything you need to know for mech v mech combat. the only book you need to get, is 'Total Warfare'. it covers most of the other units used in the game (infantry, armor, vtol etc) these are currently being produced by CGL (Catalyst game labs). however, there are two older books that literally cover everything, including design and construction rules. both are from the 90s and available on ebay for less than the total warfare book. Fasa 1640 'battletech compendium'. and Fasa 1701 'battletech master rules'. these are far better layouts of the rules in a book about 1/3 the size of total warfare. as far as 'Clan invasion: Reinforcements' box. it's priced at $39.99, but CGL has had this on sale for $24.99, for over a year. it comes with 196 heavy card stock mechs. if you get the starter box or essentials box and use the $20 off code, this becomes $4.99. an absolute steal. the mech sheets are available online thu 'master unit list'. simply print and play. to save printer ink, many players put the sheet in a page protector and use dry-erase markers. this is a good overall vid for new players trying out this game!

Beginner boxes are good almost as a demo. After several games with QS rules, players are normally ready for the AGoAC rules. So either just foot in door or for younger players, or maybe time crunch situations where you still want to do classic. The lack of heat definitely means it favors energy mechs. If you consider that AGoAC is around $45, and Clan Invasion is $40, together they would be $85. If you can get Alphastrike box for $65 (pretty common) you get the same number of mechs with the same Clan/IS distribution, excluding the 2 "awkward" elemental points. But IS battle lance and IS command lance (forcepacks) are probably where the best vale is at ($3-4 per minature).

A Game of Armored Combat should be your first purchase. The essentials and beginner boxes are solid for the new mech options. In my opinion, you need the AGoAC box. The Essentials and Beginner Boxes are nice add-ons, since they have different 'mechs the AGoAC doesn't (Rifleman, Centurion, and the Vindicator from the new BB). After that, once you've learned the game's basics and want to go further, get the Total Warfare book and start looking at Force Packs that speak to you. I'll be getting the Alpha Strike box soon so I have a few Clan 'mechs on hand, and because I want to learn AS anyway. Also, in reference to your calling it a Timber Wolf instead of a Mad Cat, there are very few Clan units that I will call by their Inner Sphere name over their Clan name. But the main one is the Cauldron-Born. So much cooler than Ebon Jaguar.

Game of Armored Combat is the best to start with imo for the price. Though of the 3 Beginner/essentials box, the Vindicator one is the best imo. If you are starting out, start with 2 mechs per side. Lance on Lance or 4 v 4 is a daunting task for any newer player. My intro games usual involve 2 Medium mechs per side. Yea the BattleMech Manual is more streamlined compared to Total Warfare. Get both, but get the BMM first before total warfare. When you are ready for combined arms with vehicles and the like, go for the Total Warfare book.

Facing matters less in AS. Everything in front of the mech's rear hex line is considered to be in their firing arc. If firing into the back of the mech (center to center, it passes through the rear hex line) an additional point of damage is done. So it certainly matters, it's just not as granular as it is in Classic.

Thank you so much! I don't have the base Alpha Strike box, so I don't have a complete set of rules, and the resources I was able to find online wasn't clear on a lot of stuff. This resulted in a lot of "sorta rules" between me and those I play with (who leave the rules to me, mostly), some of which I see now were wrong. I have a question, or rather two. Are multiple-target attacks a thing? And how is range handled? If I'm at short range, but want to use medium-level damage instead, is that a thing, or are you constrained to range brackets?
@weslaydragons749
Жыл бұрын
You are mostly constrained to range brackets. There are some advanced things that let you play with them a bit. For example there's a unit skill that allows you to trade one bracket modifer with another (so like a unit specialize in sniping can take a +0 for long range modifier but they are +4 at short range). As far as multiple target attacks go that's in the optional rules section of the ASCE under multiple damage rolls. If using this rule you roll 2d6 for each point of damage being fired at a target, for each 2d6 that met or exceeded the target number 1 point of damage is done. You can spread your damage out across multiple targets this way, with a +1 modifer for each target beyond the first. So say you're firing a Battlemaster C for 9 points of damage and want to split it into 3 points of damage across 3 targets. You'd roll 3 sets of 2d6 against the first target with the normal TN, against the second target you would do the same with an additional +1 modifier, against the third target it would be a +2 modifier. Hope that helps!
