I've seen another interview with Joshua in which he speaks English, and he does have a sort of odd accent that sounds more American than British. But his accent is just a part of his very unusual nationality status, with him permanently being an outsider in Japan regardless of being born there and living completely in the language and culture for most of his life. This would never happen in the US, where he'd be a citizen automatically.

I'm assuming Joshua's father is Australian, if he has both, but only has the British one, due to being born in London? That is to say, born in London to Australian parents, who then moved to Japan with him, as a baby, thus inheriting their citizenship, and only being British because he was born there? I am assuming his mother is a Kiwi by descent too, then, since she was born in Japan? Kiwi parents, who moved to Japan (assuming for work)... and so she likewise inherited their nationality? If his father did NOT have British citizenship, and Joshua would otherwise have been Stateless, the third generation thing does NOT apply. Yes, neither Australia nor I believe New Zealand, allow third generation citizenship, generally speaking.... I know a lot of countries in Europe DO, so I suppose that might have come as a surprise... HOWEVER, Australia at least, I cannot speak for New Zealand... have some rules there,. they have to follow, and it is also a signatory to multiple conventions related to immigration and citizens etc which oblige them to NOT leave anyone as a Stateless person. Normally when you GET Australian citizenship, or when you get a FOREIGN one as an Australian, the Australian government expects you surrender either your former, or in the case of the latter, Australian, citizenship. HOWEVER, you have to DO SO FORMALLY, by consent. They cannot COMPEL you to surrender foreign citizenship, if they have already granted your Australian citizenship, nor can they, in the case of the latter, if you an Australian citizen, just arbitrarily, revoke your Australian citizenship. This is due to aforementioned domestic rules, and aforementioned international agreements, one part of which, is to avoid the chance of creating a Stateless person. In Joshua's case.. if his father was not born in London, but some place else outside Australia, and therefore solely an Australian citizen, even if only by way of descent, his parents being Australian citizens, and HE, Joshua, was NOT recognized as a Japanese citizen, and would otherwise have been a Stateless person, he almost certainly WOULD be granted Australian citizenship. He is unlikely to ever lose his UK citizenship, but it theoretically IS possible, since he is not a citizen by birth... though the UK cannot make anyone a Stateless person either, so that would be almost impossible.... but should he, he will almost assuredly have the right to claim Australian citizenship. I am pretty sure the laws a very similar in NZ, so he would also likely have that option, and find the third generation thing not be a factor. Just something worth his knowing, since he seemed to be a little worried he may end up a Stateless person.

Be yourself no matter what they say."
