Very vulnerable formations. I prefer 2-3-2. You can either play aggresive (with the mid-mid as a CAM) or more defensive (CDM), depending on the skills of your players. If you have fast attackers, I prefer CDM, so there's enough depth. If the opponent is more defensive and there's not much depth on the pitch I prefer a CAM instead.

Not sure why these formations are so confusing. A 3-3-1 formation is easy to teach and much more "standard" than these.

@@ΣεραφείμΦιλίππου No. That midfielder you said is defensive midfielder. The rest 3 is actual midfielder. So its without striker. But front 3 play as forward on attack.

Part4 I’m not a coach but maybe trying playing a compact 3-3-1 and practice pressing & shutting down passing lanes ans giving player roles based on their best attributes aka strengths, in possession maybe try a 2-3-1-1 and have a central defender good with the ball play as a defensive midfielder to link up play but if you wanna be really offensive then maybe try a 2-2-2-1 with wingbacks becoming attacking midfielders and if possession is lost & they try to attack wide one of your central defenders (who btw need to have space between eachother) has permission to press the man who has the ball while the defensive mid covers for him as the 2 central defenders stay narrow & cut out passing lanes and the midfielder now becoming the defensive mid to retain the shape, tho i think it’s better to stay in shape & play a 3-3-1 whilst in possession becomes a 2-2-3 with one of the ball playing central defenders becoming extra man in midfield, and if you’re defending deep it’ll turn into a 5-1-1 with wingbacks keeping the width of the pitch in both attack & defense, basically everyone is important if you play with a 3-3-1 so i recommend playing it to improve every player on the pitch, also try being adventurous in the attack & smart in the defense aka always retain shape of having 4 players who can shut down a counterattack and have 4 begin it (alongside centre mid) & always try to create numerical advantages in a certain area to create one-two situations in the box. Also, your striker can play as a false 9 to create spaces for his teammates to exploit as well as to link up play between the midfield & the attack & create deadly chances and avoid being selfish unless if there’s a clear chance.

I made this video years ago to help parents and kids who didn't know the game have a little better understanding of the positions. I posted it in hopes that it would give some first time coaches a starting point, and hoped they would use it as a launching pad to find out more. It is not perfect and yes some of the formations are ridiculous (I.e. one defender). I did however use each of them at one time or another (with success). I know I didn't cover every formation, I just used the ones I commonly used The kids I coached were U10 at the time. It was a SAY league, so competition was not the primary goal. The main idea was to give the kids a deeper understanding of the game and learn. Many of the kids I coached have moved on to select level play and are now play in standard 11 v 11 games. I no longer coach a team as my own child has moved on to play in a select league. I do still coach her in the only position I ever played myself, goalkeeper.

If you play anything less than 2 defenders or 3 midfielders in my 8v8 league, you will absolutely get destroyed. a 3-3-1, 02 2-4-1 formation is standard. This is an adult competitive league, with some highly technical players, including some ex- D1 collegiate and PDL players.

i never seen such a formation unless you want to loose your game !!!!!! without your center defense you are dead beat, you are looking at a game from your own perspective ,did you ever consider the plan of the other team. the best formation ever is 3-2-2 with a good passing and good movement in the midfield where the offender manage to open space for a run to score the 3-2-2 is like this goal keeper right defense center defense left defense right midfield left midfield center right center left

Thanks for taking the time to put this together as a lot of coaches are looking for this type of info. These formations are completely foreign to me and I've coached 8 v 8 for years. They are (IMHO) incredibly aggressive and dangerous. I don't know how in the world a 1-1-2-3 would work against travel clubs- no matter how good your back two players are - it would be a turkey shoot. You seem to think 3 defenders is conservative - I find it standard. Most teams vary between a 2-3-2, a 3-3-1 or maybe a 2-1-3-1. None of your formations give you any width in the midfield. 3 forwards? You have 3 kids standing around - that's bad for their development. One midfielder? You're giving up a LOT of real estate. These formations are VERY unconventional. Where do you coach? What age/level? (I mean this with respect - I don't claim to have all the answers).

+Aaron Snyder - I've been tasked with coaching my son's soccer team this season (it's 8-9 year olds and a YMCA league...so it's not highly competitive).....I don't know about the other formations listed in this video, but the Y has the 2-2-3 formation as "standard" formation. You say you've been coaching for years and have never seen that? Any ideas why they would list that as the "standard"? Really, I am so unknowledgeable about any of this (which is how I stumbled across this video) and am looking for advice.
@aaronsnyder9091

+Jim Mahanes I have no idea why they would list it as standard and if I've learned anything through years of doing this it's humility so I'm not going to put down anybody's way of doing things - but I can say that three forwards is more than most professional 11 vs. 11 teams use and I don't understand a formation that would have 3 kids standing on offense and NOBODY clogging up the middle on either the back or the middle line. These formations are suicide imho. With that said - at the age you're coaching, you'll be hard pressed to get them to stay in position...Heck even skilled players 2 or 3 years older can be very hard-headed in that regard! I wouldn't spend much time at all thinking about formations - the games are going to be dominated by the bigger, faster kids. I honestly wouldn't spend much time at all worrying about tactics - these kids need to be touching the ball hundreds of times/practice. Make sure they all bring a ball to practice and have them dribble (not just kick and run...there's a huge difference) and proper technique on passing and shooting...If you can make sure they do NOT kick with their toe and get every single kid touching the ball a LOT at practice you're doing something right. Worst possible practice: Put all the kids in a line and have them shoot one at a time...Then have them "race" by kicking and running with the ball through cones and wrap it up with a scrimmage where the bigger kids dominate. THAT is as bad as it gets - and I see it played out all over...There are a million different games you can find online that will teach skills and have ALL of the kids engaged. You might lose a couple games to a coach who solely focuses on tactics but you need to take the long view. Have fun - Like you I was kind of thrown into it about a decade ago and I didn't even like the game at the time - I've come to love it now.

Yeah....first practice was last night.....was like herding cats :-) I'm focusing on skill drills and games (involving touch) and playing as a team (passing and not hogging the ball). Have found lots of games for this age group and will use those....last night, the kids were just meeting each other for the first time...so they were kinda wild....hoping that calms down as the season progresses. I'll probably focus (by way of any kind of tactics)....on then learning to play in lanes and learning to spread the field out (not bunch up). Like I said, it's a YMCA league, so not hugely competitive.....but I'm looking forward to it. I'll keep you posted .... Thanks.

I run a men’s league team at a low level semi pro/high level amateur league and we do preseason 8v8 leagues. I think the 3-3-1 is the most effective. If you can get a high stamina and technical box to box center mid you basically have 4 at the back on Defense and 4 in attack. Anything with less than 2 at the back in my opinion is very risky against a team with attacking ability.
