I love this movie always! I remember b4 it came out Paris' sister was my kids babysitter, she was telling us all about the movie. Being from Long Branch we were excited too. My mother in law at the time knew and knows alll the sisters very well and attended church with them. I used to go drive down the street and show my daughter's the house. And too along with my daughter's went to Gregory School. I used to watch this movirle so much i know it by heart. When i moved i told everyone about it. Im so proud of them!!

Unfortunately sometimes we never realise just how hard our parents worked to give us the opportunities in life, which they were denied. It is only when they are no longer with us that we really understand what sacrifices they made and how much they really loved and cared. A superb movie beautifully acted which portrayed the daughters and their individual characters. The real stars were the parents, their daughters manifesting their dreams and aspirations. Very moving and thought provoking, thank you!

Shouldn't have to prove yourself. You shouldn't have to because of colour. A job either a doctor or a cleaner, your value is Jesus who he says you are. It's great to have hope, to be successful, to not allow ourselves to be made into what others mold us to be. Exactly it's true Janet has her own path like her dad. She doesn't want her father's dreams, part of him was good but part of it was hurt, and not wanting the same issues for his daughters. 😢😢

But if one of your children say had special needs, you can't put the same amount of pressure, but treating that child same is important. It's hard really. 😊

The mummy shouldn't of said to her son, you won't amount to anything that's a curse, that can stick. But she had her reasons, I get it. She was scared he will not be successful. 😢😊But he will ❤Jesus knows the plan.

I met Carl Lumbly and his now deceased wife, Vonetta McGee. I used to be close to his sister and her husband and children. I remember going with her to the movies to see her brother acting on the big screen. His portrayal in this (my favorite movie of him) is nothing less than magnificent. It speaks volumes and will nerver grow old.

Thank you. Yes! It is based on a true story. You should read the book upon which the movie was based. It is more comprehensive and I’m sure you’ll like it. Have a lovely day and take care. Sincerely, Dr. Thornton.

"Scrippa scraps".......really? Which adult can't pronounce stethoscope and settles for "scrippa scrap?" Pathetic and embarrassing. When the "adult" is corrected it should be pronounced correctly from then on....but no! Too many black parents are obsessed with the "doctor and lawyers" path for their children and do not create an environment that is conducive to attaining this dream. This "scrippa scrap" kiddie term plays into the trope of black people simply not being able to speak in an adult way, using adult words, being more comfortable with using words like "finna" and "aks" and "y'all" and "prolly." It's time to grow up.

Thank you for your comment. You are so right! Our Dad (and Mom) didn't coddle us because they knew the world wasn't going to coddle us. We were prepared and ready for whatever was out there for us and we succeeded thanks to our parents. Have a wonderful day and I hope you have some time to read the book. It's actually better than the movie. Take care and so long for now. Sincerely, Dr. Thornton
