Despite what you've said about being inexperienced in making KZitem videos, I think you've done a superb job. You've tried out every option; you haven't been drawn into assuming that the newer version is necessarily better than the old; you stick to one pattern, so the comparisons are completely objective and the differences are easy to hear. Congratulations, and thanks. If there's one - tiny - other thing that would be useful, it's using a pattern that has one or two notes' worth of silence in it, so you can hear what the echo is like when no note is being played.

@stylusnation

No. You can turn off the reverb with a long press of the memory foot switch, so it’s just echo, but the master bypass switch is essentially for both echo and reverb; however you can turn down the echo volume to zero and still have only the reverb running in any mode.

Appreciate you doing this. Are you able to offer some advice, regarding Magneto vs the Volante? I assume you opted for the Magneto over Volante or already owned the Magneto and had no need for both?. Would you say the Magneto is a more capable sound designing tool?. It definitly appears to have more hands on control. I do not have any modular kit, would be using either device, as a main effects unit, running everything through it via audio interface. I understand I have to make the decision for myself, just any help from those with experience would be welcome. All the best
@stylusnation
2 жыл бұрын
Hi there - while I do own the Magneto, i do not have the Volante and have only had a cursory look at it before. I am not terribly well versed in the exact differences in the specs (though one major one right off the bat is MIDI in the volante if you’re looking to sync delay repeats), but I would say that if you’re not yet invested in modular synthesis, starting with the Magneto would not be worthwhile. The clear advantage of the Magneto is the amount of CV controllable parameters, but without modules like LFO’s, random voltage generators, something to send clock, etc. you wouldn’t be able to take advantage of this. As someone who has spent far too much money on modular I can tell you that while it has its magical moments, the cost to value once you add cases, power, etc. can be a little questionable, plus with modular at such a hot level compared to line you’d likely need to add an audio I/O module as well (the Volante, like other higher end Strymon pedals, can take both instrument and line level inputs handily with a switch on the back). So unless you’re quite keen to get into modular in a larger way, I would say the Volante is the easy choice of the two. Stepping back though, just so I understand, you’re essentially looking for a master effect for your whole mix? Or as a send? What sort of music are you making?
@mmhcreates
2 жыл бұрын
@@stylusnation thank you, for taking the time to reply with very useful information. The Volante is definitly easier straight out of the box, especially for someone with no modular experience. Volante probably would be a better choice out of these two. Possibly, both master and send, but primarily as a master effect. Or at least I think so. The thought is to have the ability, to run/process everything/all instruments through the FX. The music I make varies from Reggae/dub, orchestral, Dnb, folk. Will spare you and won't go on listing more. Essentially, play, tweak and structure sounds, that appeal to my ear and the feeling. Some of the sounds in the music that has touched me the most, come from the reverberations and reflections. Scientist - kidney punch. Is a dub tune, amongst others, that moves me deeply. And I would like that kind of hands on control of the soundscape.
@stylusnation
2 жыл бұрын
@@mmhcreates Makes sense. I will offer just two cautions - first that the reverb on the Volante is only a spring emulation, so that works well for dub but your mileage on other genres may vary. This is always a challenge with combo FX pedals, in that they can only cover so much ground when incorporating multiple FX types. Second that the secondary/hidden features on the Strymon pedals can be a bit fiddly to access, so in regards to hands-on control, that might be a slight limitation. In a perfect world I wish that Benidub made a stereo version of their amazing dub delay, as it is absolutely amazing, but useless for a stereo send or master FX because it is mono (though I can understand why). Anyhow, if you’re looking for an all-in-one, this will certainly give you the tape delay sound which will compliment many of the genres you mentioned and a good (though not totally flexible) reverb. Your other option of course is to stick a more conventional reverb on the end of an FX chain behind the Volante, or even to use two more all-rounder style pedals for delay and reverb (obvious choices of Timeline and BigSky come to mind and they’re both great), but then you’re in a much higher price range. I’d be curious to hear what you settle on and how you find it!
@mmhcreates
2 жыл бұрын
@@stylusnation Discovered the benidub delay, today and if it was stereo, I think that would be the one. The 'Zen delay' has also caught my attention and is stereo. The filters sound musical, from what I've heard so far and appeal very much. All other filters appear to be mono, at least so far. I assume it is partly because Mono is more authentic to the original dub sound. So if I am to discount the Magneto, it's currently a toss up between Volante and Zen. A very privileged predicament. Definitly not a complaint. Regarding seperate reverb, the Strymon Nightsky has intrigued since launch. And then they release the module equivalent, the Starlab, which again appears to have more features and hands on control, than the pedal counterpart. Currently, I cannot afford to try them all. So, I think I will have to purchase one of the above and decide for myself if it is 'right'. And gradually work from there. I really appreciate your help and guidance. It is probably best that I stay away from modular for the time being, may get into it in the future. I keep you posted. All the best

@@mmhcreates Well, a word or two about the Zen - yes, great dub delay potential, has MIDI if you want to sync, but no reverb if that’s important. Drive and Filter are/can be a lot more aggressive than I expected them to be, and some of the delay modes can get quite wild quite quickly. In general my experience of it (and I don’t use it a lot these days for this reason) is that it can do tame and it can do aggressive but I didn’t find a lot of middle ground. I will have to go back to it and see if I still feel that way.

Nice work, I love my RE20 and use it tethered to my Moog subsequent 37 all the time. From there signal goes into a Strymon Big Sky, so if I don't like the reverb on the RE20, I switch the Big Sky in, works and is simple and effective and sounds glorious. As soon as you went to the new RE202 it sounded harsh, bright and brittle, I always said to people the RE20 is the most analog sounding digital effect you'll ever hear.

Yes, it’s funny, I also say something similar about my Drumstation - as with FX, as more and more digital emulations of drum machines come along, the earliest ones are ironically the most ‘analog’. Good call on putting a reverb behind the RE-20, and the Big Sky is of course a great pedal. I like that they made the reverb separate on the RE-202, but it still doesn’t shine enough to make the whole thing work.

Keep heading that direction.I have the opportunity to test the RE 202 today. I’m looking for my first pedal and I’m not sure if the RE 202 is a better investment than the good old Eventide Space for TechHouse, Techno, Ambient productions. What would you recommend? Best from Berlin
@stylusnation
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words and feedback. With regards to a recommendation, I think there are a few factors to consider. Some pedals are great generalists, while others fit a niche well but can’t work too well outside it - I assume you need something a little more flexible if you’re spanning a few genres. Plus there is of course the question of stereo - there are far too many good delays and reverbs in mono… Also of course the RE-202 combines a delay/echo and a reverb, and in most other pedals you will find only one of those functions. But if you’re looking for a good stereo ‘all-rounder’ reverb for techno, tech house and ambient, the Space is of course a great choice. For another very strong contender, you might also consider Rooms by Death By Audio which I have been using a lot - just have to be careful on the gains as it runs a little hot on line level inputs, but the sound in a number of the modes is great for techno and ambient. And of course the obligatory Strymon line-up of the ‘sky’ pedals are all great, however their glossy sheen is best used in ambient more so than Techno - and some might argue that it’s a bit overused now. ;) The Nightsky is one I have been using a lot more in the ambient space, but may or may not be something you would entirely make use of, but I love the slightly unusual sound of it. An inexpensive option but a less popular outlier is also the EHX Oceans 12 which has a dual reverb and can take you to some interesting places, and almost gets you to a place of pseudo-delay. Another slightly odd but interesting choice is the Earthquakes Devices Avalanche Run, which combines a delay and reverb, but it does neither really well, so it’s a compromise, and more for the ambient side really. Mono reverbs and pure delays are a whole other conversation… And then also old rack FX units, which have so many great classic sounds for techno and ambient. Perhaps these are good topics for a future video… :) In any case, I’m curious to hear your experiences testing out the RE-202, and what you end up deciding. Alles Gute aus Kanada.

This is where KZitem audio compresses the parameter changes so it’s harder to hear. You could get a better listening setup but I recommend checking it out in person too. Tape echo has the echo element alongside tap saturation and when you compress the tape saturation sound it’s hard to notice the nuances.
