That proves what I always say, Speed does not equal penetration. If you handloaded the 7mm Mag with Berger 168 or 180 VLD's at a slower FPS, the 7mm would have probably out penetrated the 6.5. You had a light for caliber bullet with a exposed soft lead tip which will not do as well as a heavy VLD bullet going slower. I still enjoyed the video as the old 30-30 170gr did pretty well, Its what I shoot in my old 336

Great video, my gasket broke too, but it doesn't seem like its necessary. A little trick I would recomend is to leave about 3MOA or 1 MIll on the elevation instead of locking it out all the way. This is so you don't have to unlock the inner turret if you have ammo that shoots a bit higher and you need a bit less elevation.

If you build this you should add a rubber baffle that hangs down several inches into the water. It will make a big difference in keeping the heat inside. Also you can add a round hollow or insulated plastic disc that is made to float on the surface of the water to add additional insulation. The livestock push this disc down when they drink.

A local friend in the BC interior created a quick smaller version by putting an equal sized bucket inside of another. However in the bottom bucket he put about 1/3 water, his heater and aa few bricks or something as a spacer to hold the weight of the top bucket, which was then filled with the drinking water for his animals. I don’t know how effective this was but he felt it helped to insulate and keep water warm in the colder days. Big or small, creating an insulated layer around a bucket or trough is what helps. Wish there were more things on the market provided for us. Let me know what you ended up making and how it worked! All the best!

First of all, that gun collection 🤤 I just drooled a little. Fellow 🇨🇦 here and in the market for a new lever action takedown and struggling between the 45/70 and a .44 mag which are really the only viable options in a takedown rifle. Why nobody builds one in a 30-30 is a mystery. Anyway, I’m leaning towards the .44 for a few reasons. Most of my shots on Vancouver island at deer have been inside of 150 yards. The deer here are mostly under 150 pounds. And the .44 mag ammunition is easier to find and about 30-40$ a box cheaper. Lastly I want a gun that’s fun to shoot and not going to beat the shit out of me 😂 Having said that, I’m not afraid of the 45/70 so would still be open to hearing it’s arguments. This is one of the best penetration demonstrations on KZitem, and I have spent the last few weeks watching them all. Well done. Thanks for posting. Would love to hear your thoughts on these two calibres.
@fod4250

Hey thank you for your kind comments. I grew up on Vancouver Island so I understand your hunting world a bit. If you’re choosing between the two, you’ll always get more energy out of a 45/70 and if you hand load you could also a soft load. But it’ll always kick. I find the 44 mag still a nice little kicker only because they are in a lighter gun. Which if you’re hunting and carrying a gun, a lighter package is nice. I’ve hunted with magnums over the years, but have come to appreciate a moderate caliber. The reason long range shooters use smaller/intermediate sized calibers is because they can be more accurate. Some people find it hard to get a 6 inch group (or something acceptable for hunting) at 1,000 with a magnum rifle. I’ve coached some guys who really struggled to achieve an acceptable group for hunting at 200 yards with their 7 rem mag. So until they could do that I recommend they hunted with a 7-08 or something in the intermediate category. Somewhere is that sweet spot of manageable recoil and accuracy, with down-range energy and velocity. So for the category of game I hunt, I found the 6.5 creedmoor with a 156 grain bullet at 2700 fps to be the sweetest for me. I can actually shoot it at the longer distances it’s effective for hunting at. So for your game, terrain, enjoyment, and accuracy, what of the two calibers would you choose? Either will do it. A buddy once said,”better is a small hole in the right spot than a big hole in the wrong spot.” If it was me I think a 44 mag with the right ammo would offer good bullet performance, be enjoyable and manageable to shoot effectively, and a nice little package to carry around in the thick bush for many hours. On my shelf in 44 mag I have 300 grain HSM Bear Load ammunition, 225 grain ftx Hornady - great for a flatter deer load, and whatever is cheapest for range fun. Hope this helps. All the best! Let me know what you decide to go with.

She is older and I am worried as it’s been years and grandpa had electricity by the stock tank by the house that was out to pasture so he never had to worry about this currently were floating objects but still having to break ice and was thinking of putting maybe our smaller unit(40gallon) inside a bigger unit with hay and foam. Very interesting, thank you. I think the biggest determining factor in deep bullet pentration is bullet construction. Hard cast bullets are the absolute best when you desire the deepest pentration, especially in pistol caliber cartridges. Bullets that stay in one piece, generally penetrate the deepest. Remington Core lokt bullets, your choice for the 30-30 are known to be extremely good bullets, that generally stay in one piece and shoot completely through most game. They have been my go to bullet for over 50 years. Great information, enjoyed your video

So how do you get the zero to the zero rotation position?
@fod4250
2 жыл бұрын
1) Before sighting it in just turn the elevation left/down until it bottoms out/ won’t turn any more. 2)Then loosen off the elevation cap and remove. 3) Next loosen the 3 internal Alan screws, which will allow you to adjust elevation as you now sight in your gun. So now shoot and adjust the scope. Note it will turn smoothly with no clicks. 4) Once elevation is dialled in then lock off the 3 internal Alan screws, replace cap into the zero position and tighten. This should finish the elevation process. For windage, just turn until it is in line with your bullet placement. Then loosen the Alan screws and spin the cap to the correct zero position and lock the Alan screws. Hope this helps.

Let me try and explain something to you people. Try and grasp what a small enclosed pool would, and does, look like. Also, an enclosed hot tub, with whatever wood, except not the decking and accessories that go along with it. The heating coils would have to be bound OUTSIDE directly to the tank, or tub, or whatever you use for water. Foam, of any type, isn't going to help you in this situation. Foam insulation, in general, means absolutely NOTHING, in the predicament. Furthermore, depending on the dimensions of the tank, if it was bigger, you would need two sets of coil heaters bound to the outside. One running around the outside perimeter of the sides to the trough, and another separate heating coil arrangement at the length of the bottom of the tank. Whatever electrical cut-off, thermostat, timer, or whatever, is on you. Then, the whole thing is enclosed with wood frame, panels, or whatever.

Hi Fod, I developed a similar idea years ago for our ranch in CO. I incorporated a copper coil in the bottom of the trough, between the two tanks, and connected that to a 4'x8' solar thermal panel with antifreeze/water running through it. It worked really well. These days, i'm looking at connecting a few solar electric panels to a DC heater. Costs have come down to the point that it should pay for itself in a couple years. One change I'd consider is using insulated balls on the surface of the water, so as the water level goes down as they drink the water, the "lid" goes down. too. That way they don't have to dunk their head below the plywood.

Very cool. Bubblers are a lot less expensive to run than a coiled heater. Also, fill empty plastic bottles 3/4 of the way with salt water, seal them, and let them float around in the tank. The bubbler moves the salt water bottles around and the salt water doesn't freeze around the bottles as they bob around the tank. For severe cold, a person could put a timer on the coil heater so it doesn't run constantly. That could save some money in the long run.
