I live in Pennsylvania the regional competition in 1979 was held at Hyner View State Park. That year the Electra-Flyer Olympus kites dominated then competition taking the top three spots on the podium. The next year in 1980 The Comets swept the competition at Hyner. Shortly after that I bought a Comet that I flew to 1995. Still have the Glider. BTW I won the regionals in 1979, never won a damn thing after that

The pilots look like Mike Kelsey and his brother on the orange and white Free-flight standards, and Zane Wadley in the "circus tent" Bennett SX

I was on a hang gliding trip to Oahu in the early 80's. There was a guy there flying an old standard and soaring like a bird. He probably paid $20,00 for it or someone gave it to him. I was impressed! And he was getting 3-400' above the ridge top.

In the early 80's I was on Oahu on a hang gliding vacation. One of the regulars at Makapu was a guy still soaring an old 4-1 LD standard. I was impressed.

A little processing in a editor could improve the image quality. I think I'll download and if it works I'll repost.

Very cool! I took over Fly Above All in 2012 from Chad Bastian, who took over from Ken DeRussy, glider #4. Fly Above All, as a HG school, started in 1974 so this would have been early in our history.

Watching vintage is so cool as it so reminds me of my early flights from the early 70’s. So jealous of those west coast sites as a New England flyer. But still at it and so proud of our HG heritage as I introduce new pilots to free flight as a tandem aero tow instructor.

Awesome.... the bad old days. That’s when hang gliding was dangerous and sex was safe. Fond memories for me. Deflexors, six inch wing bolts, plastic saddle tube spacers.... there hardly a day that I didn’t draw blood setting up or breaking down.

I'm pretty sure that was the Nationals. The "Tut Fliers" were from somewhere back east. And we launched the Regionals from the launch currently called, for some peculiar reason, "Regionals launch", not Pine Flats.

Wow, what a time to be alive (and being young helped too)! Great old footage, seems like only yesterday. I'm always amazed at the radical evolution of wings thru the 70s. It was the best of times but in hindsight some of the equipment we used was pretty damn scary... Thanks for sharing.

Where's Curtis :) We met a few years back at Dockweiller Beach. I love the old footage. I have a growing collection on converted 8mm film over on my H5-Phil KZitem channel. Some of it is damn funny - all of it is 'vintage'. Take Care.

M first flight off Torrey Pines was in May of '77 (just 4 months after my very first flight and I was 17 yrs old) and I was SO stoked to finally be able to fly there. The air there is so smooth and the flight pattern was easy to learn. Like this guy, all my previous flights were minutes long vs the over half an hour first flight I had at Torrey. What a kick! Hooked for life! I can proudly say I increased that endurance mark to 8 1/2 hours one day in June of '78 ('79?). There is no better site for a great day of hang gliding where you didn't need a driver to get your vehicle to the LZ when flying mountain sites, 'cause the LZ was also your take off point. Love that place!

Too cool! I never flew Pine Flats before, but did get an awesome 4 1/2 hr. flight at Crestline, earlier that year. I probably would have been in this video, flying my Cirrus 5, but I was traveling around the country and missed my invitation. Good times traveling, though.

Something like 6 years ago you made the first video requesting to identify wings and pilots. You used 1 really good song I guess from the 70's for the complete video. Do you remember the name of the song? [email protected] Thank you

More than likely the song is from some free library of music from resources that I found available in one of my video editing softwares. Do not remember the name of the song.

I think that's me landing a Bennett Lazor at 8:23. Flying with the Bennett team, that was a fun competition, but the only one I ever flew in. it was the "one-on-one" type launch system that year. You'd be considered a hero if you could cross from Pine Flats to Crestline and back, back in those days.... We've come a long way since then !

Wow, what a blast from the past, my family flew at Escape Country for several years, great memories, I still have a Visor from the 1974 World Hang Gliding Championships we flew in. I flew a Seagull lll then. Its sad to go back to that area now, its all houses, but you can still see the 1500 take off point. We were the Soaring Solesbees back then. Great memories!

Nice job on the filming and the narration! I hoped I would be in here, but no! I blew myself out on the speed run and was the flight instructor at Escape Country! I learned a lot at this meet and grew from it. Thanks for the history. I think you got most of it right in terms of names, but I cannot add any more but my own Jeff Anderson

Kathleen: Although I have a fairly large library of film from the early days of hang gliding in and around Southern California, it seems I never caught Bill on film. He was a really nice guy, and a good friend. I moved from Southern California around 1978-9, and Sue and I are now living in Arkansas. We really enjoy Arkansas. Just got back from a canoe adventure on the Mulberry River with my son an his wife and good friend and his wife. The river was up and we got dumped several times. Nursing our wounds this morning. Active with bicycling and of course still hang gliding. How are your mom and Zane doing?
