So why did this lady "retire" if she wanted to keep working? She never really retired, she just went to work in a food bank.

Food banks with hundreds of volunteers and thousands of generous people are doing more than the govt with hundreds of thousands of "workers" and a budget of billions of pounds! Food banks show just how much better private charity is to thecwelfare state!

I used a food bank for over a year during lockdown; not far from where this one is. I really have no idea what I would have done without it, the kindness & gentle generosity of the volunteers was humbling..and as the film mentions, the opportunities to access advice so valuable too. Its absolutely shameful that they even have to exist in a country like this. Im not suprised by so many horrible comments on here though..its the kind of attitude that this government actively promotes. Compassion is an alien concept to them. Its all very well to make nasty remarks about people having kids they cant afford, but sometimes life doesnt turn out as you expect..in fact it rarely ever does..thankfully there are more kind people out there than those that arent.

G'day, Charlotte Harper! Anne Widgington said that she had made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and had seen the poor, realising that there were poor in her own community, so she decided to help them. Her home community was her "Jerusalem", meaning that in the words of Jesus, "you will be My witnesses first in Jerusalem, in all Judaea, and Samaria," (Acts 1:8), Jerusalem being the closest and first area in which the gospel would be preached.

I think being the 5th biggest economy is our downside, if we were a 2 bit tin pot 3rd world country like all African and vast majority of Asian countries we wouldn't need to be spending all our money on junk food, sky, cars, xboxes, 60in TVs, 3x mobile phones per person, etc, etc, because they wouldn't exist so people wouldn't be seen as being in abject, or severe poverty, they would just be low earning, etc. i'd like to experiment ban all Benefit and low paid people from buying cigarettes, booze, junk food so no McD's or BK or KFC, no cars, and have them cancel all non essential bills like sky, and mobile phones, etc. after 3 months would there be a need for food banks, thank you, i didn't think there would be as well. 95% of people wouldn't need anyway. if this experiment was carried out you would see people have relative poverty and no where near severe or abject poverty.

What is Universal Credit and why are so many people against it? Does it make a huge difference to what they were on previously, and if so, how? I know many people received an extra £20 pw during Lock Down, surely that made a difference in terms of what they could buy during that period.

It replaces tax credits and out of work benefits for many people. For most it works out that they get less money, will be penalised more, and the benefit is not paid for 5 weeks so people tend to get into debt/arrears immediately. There have also been a lot of red tape issues with it.

It's great to see people volunteering to help those less fortunate. It's also about having the time and many off us simply don't have the time. I do however donate to a local food bank and help out a few homeless people that I have seen on a regular basis at my local Tesco or sitting out McDonalds, I often give them some change or buy them a meal. I can afford to help and it's no big deal if I give a few pounds her and there, it's not going to make a huge difference to me. I know not everyone can do so, but if everyone who could donate gave a little each week or month, the food banks would have plenty for everyone who came to them as I do know that they sometimes run out of basics and are forced to occasionally turn people who have nothing to eat away. That could mean them living off scraps until they come back and no one should be struggling to eat in this country. From London, UK

I stopped giving to food banks when they showed people queueing smoking branded cigarettes at over £8 a pack they could but their own food, a TV news show also showed a family at home who were using food banks, every room including the kitchen had a tv and not small screens either they all had mobile phones and I assume broadband from the games consoles in the bedrooms. Yes some families needed help but some just take advantage and as no proper checks are carried out on those getting their free food and household goods they are just laughing in the face of those who genuinely thought they were giving to the needy.
@susanelliott2287

It is about prioritising though isn't it. Yes some people genuinely need help, but lots of people get priorities wrong. Many have no food in the fridge and a car in the drive even though they are probably unemployed and don't need it for work. I think maybe people need teaching budgeting and cooking skills. I am not referring to street homeless they should be fed and provided with accomodation.

@@susanelliott2287 It depends on where they live as to whether they need a car or not. If you live in a city, then you are fine with out a car, if not then you are stuffed for getting to work. Even a city like Cambridge, buses end at 6pm, doesn't mean that work ends at 6 pm.

I reluctantly agree. I am from the US and have been to Britain many times. A whole different culture. People who weren't working had more things than me. It was weird to see. As a teacher, I look at this from an educational perspective. Education is King in the US. We need to train our children in economics and child care. We need to ensure they get an education that makes them employable. It seems to be a vicious cycle. The culture teaches to access what their parents and grandparents accessed. Of course, always, always help people in emergency situations.

Food Banks exist because the Tories are by stealth getting rid of the Welfare State, Universal Credit marks the beginning of the end of the Welfare State. As terrible and Victorian as Food Banks are, they won’t be ended under this right wing Tory Government. The Tories are solely responsible for Foodbanks. Trussell Trust Food Banks were first brought in under Tony Blair’s New Labour government from Blair’s election victory in 1997, to help people in poverty created by the late Margaret Thatcher’s right wing Tory government 1979- 1997, due to the massive rich and poor divide she created... Last year the Trussell Trust network handed out 980,000 emergency food parcels for children in the UK. This surely cannot be acceptable”. The trouble is us Brit’s have an acceptance culture, we do not fight back against any government policy, we have accepted Food Banks as the norm’... Cuts in welfare, our short term, low waged, insecure, gig economy, delays in Universal Credit. They are all the reason for decades of Tory austerity, and they all began before this virus pandemic came along, they all began under the late Margaret Thatcher in the 80s and 90’s, when she initiated shrinking the State, Cameron and Clegg’s coalition 2010 - 2015 continued “shrinking the State” under the cover of reducing the deficit, from 2010.. What sane and fair minded person would and could not agree with ending this Victorian practise in a modern 21st century Britain. The conversation we need to have is how we get rid of the Government that started the need for Food Banks in the first place. ?. Our First past the post voting system continues allowing a minority to decide for the majority of the people. According to my research, 56.4% of the people did not vote Tory in 2019, yet Boris Johnson got a majority in Parliament. ? This virus pandemic has rightly or wrongly, buried Tory austerity and its consequences in job losses in our short term low waged gig economy, across the UK. Tory cuts are ideological, the Tory right wing are opposed to the role of the State, and the Welfare State. Full stop!..Austerity, and reducing a so called deficit, is a cover for shrinking the State, and this started under 18 long years of right wing Tory rule lead by the infamous late Tory PM, Margaret Thatcher 1979- 1997, when she cut the value of old age pensions for the elderly. Food Bank usage got worse under Cameron and Clegg’s coalition government 2010- 2015 due to so called deficit cutting that in reality was the Tory agenda of shrinking the State, but was called austerity, so cuts in Welfare, and not so recently delays in Universal Credit have all assisted in the UK wide increased usage of food banks. Food Bank usage happened ages before this virus pandemic came along! The Tories are determined to wipe out the Welfare State, the Tory right wing simply dont believe in a Welfare State, they are a small State, low income tax party. In 1945, Britain woke up to its new dawn at a similar crossroads, - go back to the old broken way, or use this golden opportunity to make things better ?, That great generation choose hope and created a better, fairer society for all- including founding the NHS. This pandemic has been this generations darkest hour, but the post war generation’s darkest hour was the general election victory of the late Margaret Thatcher in 1979, her right wing agenda of rolling back the role of the State system including cuts in the Welfare State, and lack of investment and subsidy of all our vital service into privatisation, including privatization of our NHS, has demolished and ousted the Post War consensus from all of our lives. And remains the sole reason for all, our problems today. The post war generation were sold a pup, if only they could see it ?, and so many remain profiting from at the expense of their friends, neighbours, sons and daughters and we are all still living with this today. As is the Anonymous -Mother, judged for needing a Food Bank to feed her children. And there are millions of mums, and people of all ages, including pensioners, having to do the same.

Why is it that everyone HAS to compare their lot in life to Other people and their wages? WHEN exactly, will people STOP blaming OTHER PEOPLE for their lot/mistakes/decisions in THEIR own lives? If you don’t like your lot in life- YOU make changes. The amount of courses, education avenues available to EVERY single person in this country is phenomenal! Of course, you have to get off YOUR arse to do that! At very young age, my father used to say “ if you have taken the wrong road at the roundabout, get off at the next exit BEFORE you have wasted petrol and precious time, and start from your last point again “! But then again, this type of values have seen all my 4 siblings better ourselves- with full time working and families to support, all 4 of us got our degrees through Open University- your time, your input, your life! God, if he heard us blaming others for our lot in life, he would turn in his grave and haunt us. He was the reason all of us have ONE child each! His words” don’t breed if you can’t feed”! But imagine saying that now???

When the lockdown isn’t happening, the government have limited it to people for about once per month so that they don't become dependent as it's only for a crisis but how is poverty not a crisis constantly? Families on a low income (under £20K per annum) need 2 food parcels per week as poverty is an ongoing crisis! Benefits don’t cover what people really need. The cost of everything else in life such as replacing things in the home which is often when you can only afford to buy cheap things! Please keep donating to foodbanks.

The truth is that before the lockdown, only 5% of people received enough food from food banks. The rest were all malnourished which resulted in deteriorating physical health. People have only been donating 100% enough since the lockdown started. Please keep donating. Food is a physical need - not a psychological dependency. People on benefits for example with this health problems who don’t even claim dick benefit but are malnourished and cannot recover without the help of food banks giving 2 parcels to households twice per week! Wake up - the economy will get better if people are well enough to work! Food is basic! Please keep donating.
