It is a foregone conclusion that since Handel never could find the level of talent he wanted that this aria was never performed at this Handelian tempo. Wow.

The clarity of his diction and purity of sound are absolutely remarkable. JMA is a first class tenor and he sings the hell out of this aria. His interpretation is so fiery and passionate. I am moved by each listening.

Amazing... I can't help but notice the tone is slightly different than in another recording of him singing the same song. Possibly because of the location and it's reverb?

John is absolutely amazing as a tenor, I dread to think who you critiques would rather have singing this piece....... I am not technical, but the sheer strength and tone of voice are one of a kind, I would know his voice anywhere...some imbecile on youtube decided to remove 'so when the glitt'ring queen of night' with Ainsley singing, nobody could ever sing it better.......sorry, NOBODY. Someone please post it, or I shall when my Pinnock cd arrives!!!

@countered orb I suggest you listen again. It isn't aspirated throughout, but about 70% of it certainly is. I don't doubt that Ainsley could get thought purely from the diaphragm

It's not technically a coloratura as Ainsley is separating the semiquavers with the breath.. realistically there's no way to sing this with a perfect coloratura at this speed. At least I'd love to hear someone who could.

@StriderBLH Agreed on your description of musicality. What they are doing is musical within the confines of the tempo they have decided to take. I'm saying that the choice to take it THIS fast may not be the best choice musically. Believe me, I am a fan of a brisk Messiah and particularly "Thou Shalt Break Them" makes sense textually, but this tempo has pushed past the boundaries of anything that sounds normal to my ear.

scorwitz It’s marked Andante... definitely not a leisurely stroll, but I’d buy this tempo as a walk with purpose!
@StriderBLH

@scorwitz It's not as fast as it sounds. Ainsley is deliberately machine gunning the melismatic portions sound it rhythmically sounds faster. Granted, it's much faster than andante lol...I think it's a little more theatrical this way, and more appropriate to giving "bite" to the text, which with the andante tempo doesn't achieve that. I have to disagree, the musicality here is darn good. Phrasing between the orchestra and Ainsley is well done.

@scorwitz

Too fast! Much like the axiom "just because you can hit a note doesn't mean you should" I say, just because you can singing coloratura extremely fast (by cheating and adding an H in between each note) doesn't mean the tempo of a peace should be that fast. There is virtuosity and musicality, and the latter should always take precedence.

@Gajdasi Well, he takes it pretty fast compared with most other tenors. Check out the bravura version of Mozart's aria 'Fuor del mar'- that's, imo, even harder. Or really, any Rossini tenor aria like Cessa di piu resistere.

great tenor!!! gorgeous voice!! the orchestra sounds a bit hysterical for my taste...it doesn't need to go "alla breve" to get into the drama of the piece! ...and the french subtitles on the video are pretty silly!

I enjoy these recordings of Ainsley when he was younger, but I prefer more recent recordings, the tone is much more mature. He makes some great choices for this piece. His technique creates the mood, his timbre gives the music it's color, plus the orchestra is awesome!

For all the people who are objecting to the coloratura, I think you're thinking that it's kinda bumpy and could be smoother. I'm sure he's capable of it, but that would have been a mistake on his part, because the aria is actually about the use of violence. I heard a performance of it once with a tenor who was singing very smoothly, and although I admired his ability to do it, the aria really did not work that way!
