Totally agree that the 1976 Steelers had the best defense in NFL history at that time, and I remember feeling so deflated seeing Harris and Blier reduced to cheer leaders due to injuries. It was something to behold in sports history (Steeler fan for 52 years and counting.)

That little act at the goal line today would get the player ejected and suspended from the league. Having fun and showing it is illegal today.

As a longtime fan, I believe the Steelers were on their way to winning a 3 peat, had it not been for the injuries to Franco and Rocky. Oh well, those are the breaks. That’s alright, Steelers would win their 2nd back to back titles, 2 years later.

I was at that game in Cleveland.steelers didn't lose a regular season game. And only gave up like 50 60 point, for the rest of the season. The fill in QB, Kruzek didn't throw for a td and Franco and Rocky both rushed for over a grand. Unfortunately both were hurt in the playoff win in Baltimore and couldn't play in the AFC championship game and loss in Oakland. Best Steeler defensive season EVER. Look it up haters.

jack was correct , the greatest defensive play in history , the only close second was the great bears team under Mike Ditka !!!! Sure was fun watching great defensive football in the 70's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both of these great teams would physically destroy their opponents on the field !!!!!! These guys were vicious !!!!

I'm more than a little biased but the '91 Eagle defense could be argued as the greatest ever. Unlike the '76 Steelers with its two 1000-yard rushers and the '85 Bears with its #1 rushing attack to control the clock and rest the defense, the '91 Eagle D had to carry an absolute garbage offense. Couldn't run. Couldn't pass. Couldn't protect the QB. Couldn't protect the ball. The '76 Steelers ran for 2971 yards and 4.5 YPC. The '85 Bears ran for 2761 yards and 4.5 YPC. The '91 Eagles ran for 1396 yards and 3.1 YPC. As Dan Dierdorf said in '91 on Eagles-Redskins MNF regarding what the Eagle D must be telling the offense when it goes on the field, "Just try to hold them this time." The stats were amazing. Allowed a ridiculous 3.9 YPP (while the offense gained an almost as-ridiculous 4.3 YPP). Allowed only one team in 16 games to gain 300 yards of offense. The '91 Eagles were one of two NFC teams to go 10-6 and not make the playoffs. The NFC was loaded at that time, '91 especially.

Teams didn't invest in solid backup quarterbacks back then. They could have picked Steve Grogan in the 1975 draft (picked in 5th rd) or Jim Zorn (undrafted )

If the Defense was so good then why did they give up 24 points to Oakland in the most important game of the year??
