Casse-toi!

Messiaen, ten movements into a twenty movement, two-hour piano cycle: "You thought you were safe from an octatonic pseudo-tonal hunting song in 10/16 that sorta resembles ragtime, but you thought wrong!"
@stapler942
"...But first, let me warm you up with a plainchant morphed into an 'eastern dance', then hit you with some more of that asymmetric expansions procedure. After the hunting song we'll toy with some church bell harmonics, do a fancier version of that plainchant dance. Round it off with some restatements of the previous motifs. These runs are sure to dazzle your adjudicator at the twentieth-century music slam."

Hahahahhaha epic. Pseudo-tonal hunting song 🤣
@stapler942
@@danielkearney8799 Pseudo-tonal is the best description I can think of, because technically that passage does proceed from very tonal ideas of tonic and dominant chords and uses a great deal of triads. It's just that the triads are somewhat cleverly derived from "mode 2" which is just Messiaen's notation for the octatonic scale. It even distinctly modulates to a new key, twice. The score indicates "like a hunting song, like the horns" for that section. 🙂

The main man for improvisation right now - much admired by Pierre Cochereau in his youth, and ultimately Professor of Improvisation at both CNSMs in Paris and Lyon. A star pupil of Olivier Messiaen, and now his successor at this church of the Trinite in Paris with a very fine Cavaille-Coll at his disposal. No pastiche here, totally original in style. Go there if you want to hear the finest organ improvisations - you won't regret it.
