Amazing to see Roger come back in that second set. Haas was overwhelming in the first set. It seemed like Rogers confidence soared and his play was exceptional as Haas's fell into more mistakes and less creativity - simply surviving. What a contest of wills.

Fact is Federer could have tanked right here and lose with something like 1-6 4-6, instead of losing to Nadal later in the tournament because of how shitty of a season he was having after 2012. But Federer is gonna be Federer, he will always honor the spirit of the competition to the highest degree.

Haas is very good player and entered in 1996 when Sampras and Agassi were at their peak.Head to head 5-5 with sampras and troubled all ranked palyers including Agassi. Excellent graceful strokes esp backhand comparable with the graceful Rosewall and Richard Krachijk. If he entered in 2000 s at the age 20 he would have grabbed half of Federer's titles. Pity he had to play top players in 1990's and won few titles and Plauged by injuries often
@MrT67

Federer actually made the comment that Hass would have been the one to beat if it were not for his injuries and the fact that he took a year off early in his career to care for his parents who were involved in a serious motor vehicle accident. Hass in his prime was a danger to anyone and without doubt would have challenged Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

Haas received two walkovers from Sampras in that head to head. Good player with great technique but his serve has never been an out and out weapon, and mentally he hasn't always been the greatest. Should have put Federer away in the French in 2009, and didn't, that's probably one of many.
@魚-c3d

Lol. H2h between the two in 2000-2002 (2002 was haas' best year) is 2-2. After that, it was basically Roger swatting him away for 15 years. Injuries is not everything guys, I like haas' game but there's a difference between being an excellent player and being Roger Federer.

Does anyone hit a hard flat shot anymore? It's always these loopy gay shots that make the rallies last forever.
@Mzee1084

It's called topsin. It is true that players utilize a lot more topspin, but the change in racket and string technology has enabled that shift.
@HakeemKazak

lol someone named Pete Agassi calling shots gay on a Federer video...never in doubt. Regardless, don't make me have to share plenty of Agassi's rallies here on KZitem, this is the baseline game and Sampras couldn't even make a final at Roland Garros because he struggled with his (struggled is too strong of a word but just comparatively to other baseliners during his day). Anyways, you're staying back to begin with, why play a lower percentage shot? The sort of spin we've seen since the millennium is incomparable to what players like Connors and even Sampras had to face. In the modern game hitting flat is too difficult, ask Berdych..
@adamblister6005

Hakeem Kazak Pete would have won a French Open if he did the work on clay. He never put in the time and battling his iron deficiency at the time never had the stamina. He made it to the semis, but if he took care of the deficiency and prepared on clay he no doubt would have won at least one. He won multiple clay tournaments, just no French.
@HakeemKazak

Pete Agassi lol damn what a talent this guy Pete was, too bad he didn't work on clay like Agassi :s btw stamina is just as much of a legitimate strength or weakness in tennis...Sampras made a total of 5 finals on clay (3w/2l) even Roddick has 7 clay finals (5w/2l).. Fact is Sampras' game was about overpowering you and completely taking the racket out of your hands which you can't do on clay..

Djokovic is the current world number 1 and one of the most dominant tennis players (right up there with Federer, Sampras, Lendl)... but it's not because he can beat a player who is 33+ years old (an age where most players have retired). that's just silly and did Djokovic really define the sport? he definitely dominated in the last 3 years... but fan favorites are still Federer and Nadal i have heard far more people talk about trying to play like Roger or Rafa than Novak (not to mention Federer's crazy streak of fan favorite awards) Novak's great, but he is neither perfect nor the definition of tennis

Kohlschreiber seems like he hits the ball real hard, but in this match he always seems a step behind Fognini. Fognini is really good at crafting points, doing things like going behind you, or hitting an approach shot and finishing at the net. Kohlschreiber, at least in this match, is too direct sometimes. He just hits the ball really hard at the backhand or forehand, and doesn't really have a plan what to do after that. So he's kinda passive, while Fognini is aggressive.

Dat fucking reflex volley to win the first set... Rivals the troll shot from Federer vs. Bozoljac at Wimbledon. Impressive from Carlos Berlocq, to win his first titles at age 30, beating Verdasco and Berdych no less in the finals, is something to be proud of. Always great to see a veteran of the tour finally achieve success. Played quite well and had all the shots - cat and mouse at the net, short slice, the passing shot. He's a good guy.
