Greatest single moment in the history of football. Hands down. Facing relegation from the football league, something threatening the very existence of your club. Staring into the abyss One minute to go... Step up, Jimmy Glass.
@zargonthemagnificent330
3 жыл бұрын
Mate, the National League is definitely not "the abyss". It's embarrassing for any club to drop out of the Football League, but non-league football is competitive, much cheaper to watch, and more sociable for fans. There's a lot in favour of it. Plus the National League is 90% full time pro clubs anyway, so Carlisle would have survived perfectly well if they'd gone down.
@zandert8224

@@zargonthemagnificent330 my comments were by no means a sleight on the teams and supporters of non league clubs. For supporters of any team facing the possibility of leaving the football league however, it really does feel like the abyss. If you look at what happens to teams after this event, it's a mixed bag. Roughly a third get promoted back to the league, roughly a third end up mired in non league football, and the others... There are phoenix clubs that go bust and reform to rise again, but overall it can be quite dispiriting. The grounds can vary wildly in terms of facilities; female supporters may find themselves sharing a portaloo with the men, which can obviously be rather unpleasant. The consolation is there of enjoying a pint pitch side, there's always a silver lining. It's different, but non the less a rich experience. But to those supporters in the position Carlisle were in, it feels like you are staring into the abyss. A final note, the money struggles so many clubs faced even before the pandemic have been made many times worse. Just look at the desparation shown by Southend and Grimsby this season, challenging relegation from the EFL as unfair. Grimsby have new owners and have recent experience of life below.

@@zargonthemagnificent330 @zandert8224 was actually right but it was nothing to do with dropping into the National League, that goal saved our club. Our owner was a nutcase at the time and if we had gone out of the league with him as owner we would never have come back and possibly even like Scarborough who did go down could have ended up going out of business. The National league isn't the abyss but what could have happened to our club under that owner certainly was.

Nigel Pearson was the manager of Carlisle when Jimmy Glass scored. Pearson was manager of Watford when i made that comment. With both jobs he was attempting to avoid relegation. Sure this is great, but I have just watched a Liverpool comeback against Barcelona to win 4-3 on aggregate to go through to the Champions League final. If you don't find Champions League entertaining after these semifinals, I don't think you ever will.
