I've been to Depoe Bay many times growing up. Mostly to go whale watching which is offered at the Bay. Depending on the weather, the waves can get so rough that I've literally gone airborn for about a second or two from the boat going up and down. If you get seasick easily, it's not recommended. If you go, remember to hold on right to the rails and don't lean over them. I made that mistake once and almost went overboard; almost gave my mother and the skipper a heart attack.

Nice crossing! Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Cheers.

Wrong...u want to stay directly in the back of a wave... but you need a lot of power to do it...if you’re surfing a wave there’s a good chance you’re going to broach it...

Your right! That's what I was trying to say but I didn't state it well. Thank you for clarifying my thoughts. We were in a boat where someone didn't stay behind a wave coming in to Newport Oregon and were almost swamped. Luckily my husband reached around his father and pushed the throttle to full, pushed his dad out of the way and swung us back inside the jetties. Close call.

I take that charter company a lot. They are usually very skilled. Strange. Most captains ride the wave in. They sit and wait for a wave, when they ate near the top, they floor it and ride right in

Gotta be something wrong with either propulsion or steering. The boat just wallowed once a wave passed. Very little forward motion, lousy heading control. What was wrong?
@METALITHrevetments

Shouldn't the captain use more power to push through? He does not seem to have directional control of the boat.

I love all the armchair idiots on here that have no idea what that crossing can throw at you. You can not see the return waves coming off of those walls and they have no idea what was going on with the boat. There might have been a mistake but in the split seconds you have in the hole and the limitations of a 50’ vessel you have to make decisions quickly. The ocean doesn’t always cooperate with your decisions. You armchair morons should STFU until you’ve been at the helm in those conditions at that crossing!

First time i crossed the bar into depoe i followed a very experienced retired captain and was terrified, but had faith in the captain and followed him in. It is a wonderful place to pull in for the night. you just find a vacant slip and no one bothers you for moorage or anything. I stopped in two more times and loved it, it is like a carnival ride. It is over so quick, not like girabaldi where you toss your cookies going in and coming out cause it is such a long entrance. i found it easy because you can follow the range day boards on shore. once i was in trouble because it was kind of rough and foggy. i was lucky to find a whale watcher boat and he led me right to the bar and it was amazing how when you get there the fog goes away and it is like a pond on a golf corse a whole different world on the other side of the bridge. and beer and pizza.

I was attached to USCG Station Depoe Bay in the 80's and have piloted an MLB through "The Hole in the Wall" hundreds of times. Was there things that captain could have done better?....Sure, but there is no way around it, no matter how good of a pilot you are or how well you time it, sometimes you get caught by an out of series swell or a rogue wave. In that tight dogleg, it's all about timing and try as you might, you can't control when the ocean is going to sneak one in on you. The captain did a good job of getting the boat straightened out and back in the harbor safely. Armchair captain's can talk all day long about how they'd have done this and done that better, but until you've been sitting in the Depoe Bay channel at low tide with heavy seas coming directly out of the West.....it's all just talk.
