Rod knock. Bad maintenance or lots of pre ignition/ knock. It’s rare. But. Oil pickups can fail too

Try doing a valve adjustment, apparently that is a common source of this tick/knock. Also make sure your timing belt is properly tensioned

Ah so the knocking sound on my 2.7tdi v6 maybe timing jumped, enough for it to still run, as cylinder 1 not closing on time and fuel pressure is maxed because of this? And not crank failure? Worth a shot!! Costs nothing to check it over

Sorry for the super late reply. It was rod knock. Needed a new short block. I also take very good care of mine. The issue is caused by poor design of the engine oiling system. Glad they finally stopped using the EJ25, but my new short block has the same defect so it's essentially a ticking time bomb. Not gonna buy a new engine again if it happens again, even though the rest of the car is immaculate.

@@hindudeEh. The oiling system is fine. It’s a very standard oiling design used among all of their engines. Yes they have pickups that can crack. So do other brands. Yes the oil baffle could be better. But it’s not meant to race. Most of the time what causes these failures is pre ignition. The rod bearings are rather narrow, as the pre ignition/ knock occurs, the stress on the bearings is immense. This excess force pushes down so hard on the bearings that it begins to screw up the tolerance on the sides of the bearings and this makes the bearing begin to deform. Once the bearing is slightly deformed, all hell breaks loose. The oil no longer can maintain a constant film of oil on the bearing, the bearings begin to heat and create friction and the bearing spins on the rod. This happens on the stock tune. It also does happen in custom tunes but I find most premature engine failures are due to an engine that has been running poorly and has gone unnoticed by the owner. Nothing about an EJ engine is a ticking time bomb in the grand scheme of things. All engines are ticking time bombs. It’s a box full of spinning parts. This one happens to be a cheap performance car.

***Assuming you're crankshaft was perfectly lined up as well, this is totally normal*** When setting the timing on many DOHC Subaru engines the marks will be perfectly lined up until you pull the pin for the hydraulic tensor. After tenion is applied it will move one cam roughly "1/2 tooth out of alignment". This is TOTALLY NORMAL. I've heard explanations such as "it allows room for new belts to stretch". Not sure if that's entirely true, but any Subaru Technician who knows what they're doing will tell you that this is all normal.

As many comments have stated as well, many Subaru engines allow for the belt to slip 3 teeth before you begin to make contact between the valves and the pistons.

You can be off by 3 teeth before the valves and pistons make out with each other. Timing belt tensioner makes a knocking noise too. If your valves were bent AT ALL you would have a misfire on that exact cylinder and check engine light would be flashing literally. Good way to tell a rod knock is too connect a 22mm socket to your breaker bar and rock the main pulley back and forth you'll hear a knock from the extra clearance in the rod crank connection, personally I remove the oil pan and push the rods with my finger they'll be sloppy loose feeling. You'll know.😎

Great video thanks. Subscribed. I av a bugeye. I changing the timing belt pulleys and water pump. I turned the crank so the mark lines up with oil fuse. I noticed when this is lined up I get the double Marks on top cam lined up with top mark at 12 o'clock n singles point down. Basically it all lined up but they the wrong way around. So I turned crank again one more revolution n it still all lines up but they wrong...so 3pm postion marks are now 9pm but double Marks are not facing eachother instead rather point 12 o clock. What will happen if I just remove belt n line up marks properly? Engine had no issues before so I'm confused to stick to this timing or do it properly. I appreciate u vant advise without seeing but any general advice what would be an issue with turning the cams to how they should be putting on a new belt n pulleys? Thank u
