Hi I really needed to know when I went to civil court they told me I would have to wait three months for the judge to see me, is that true?

Alright so I did a name change few weeks ago about 5 weeks and got my paperwork signed by the judge. Also, I expedited mines that's why it took 5 weeks only otherwise, it takes now 8 to 11 weeks if you go with the normal process. The judge picks your newspaper publisher you cannot pick it. The judge gave me forum south and it costs $150. Price can depend based on the news publisher your judge picks for you. I'm just waiting for forum south to send me stuff.

Hello, you mention you need a utility bill, I have everything else that’s required but that due to me living with roommates and so I don’t have any utility bill in my name, will this stop me from filing a petition? You mention utility bill but did they request this when you went to the Kings Courthouse? Also did they give you a choice which paper to publish in? I had a friend who change her name in Manhattan, they didn’t ask for a utility bill but they didn’t give her choice of which paper to publish in and so she went to the paper that was told to her from the judge and she told me the paper was very expensive, it cost her $140 to publish her name change in the paper the judge told her. I hope with Kings they give you a choice as I’ll to choose Irish Echo

Hey there--sorry I missed this one. I actually didn't change my name on my birth certificate. Not sure if I need to or not or if I even can considering my birth certificate can't be replicated and "reissued" (it's from Brazil in Portuguese). Wish I could've helped with this!

Hey, what's up how did you go about publishing your name change with the news paper?
@copacetic7549

They (the court/judge) told me what paper I needed to use. I called the paper to check to see when they were open/if the were still open. They were, so I hopped on a train, went up to their office, and told them I needed to publish my name change in the paper. They do so many name changes anyway, so it's not weird or anything for them. I paid with exact change and they published it. It was pretty simple. They told me when I could come back and pick up the affidavit to bring back to court. I start talking about it around 8:29

Where do you get the petition for the name change ? The court supplies one ?
@copacetic7549

Sorry for the late reply! www.nycourts.gov/courthelp/namechange/forms.shtml Choose if you're NYC or NY State. You can use the DIY Petition, where you fill everything out electronically on the computer, and then you can download it and print it out. Or you can download the PDF petition, print it out, and fill it in yourself with a pen.

why exactly does the new name have to be publish in a newspaper?? and what exactly is the purpose of the court order?? just legal proof that the name has been changed legally??
@copacetic7549

From what I understand it's mostly just a way (maybe the only legal way) to make your name change a public record. It gives people a chance to object. This doesn't mean in cases of gender identity and stuff, but more if you're trying to avoid debt, commit fraud, or defame others by changing your name.

Do we have to fill out the name change form in front of them or can we take it home and bring it back?

I'm not sure who "them" is referring to, but you don't have to fill out the petition in front of anyone at the courthouse. You may have to fill it out in front of a public notary, though, I didn't have to, so I'm not sure it's necessary. But you do need to sign the petition in front of them. You fill out the form, sign it in front of a notary, and then once you have all of your documents (and fees), Then you can go to the courthouse.

I printed out the name change form on June 6, 2016 to start filling out. I got my petition notarized the next day. On the 9th, I went to the Kings county court. The same day, I dropped off my stuff at the Irish Echo. I picked up my affidavit from the Irish Echo on June 19th. On June 21st I went back to the Kings county court and gave them my affidavit and got my certified copies of my name change. So it took about half a month, I'd say. But that's just getting it approved, then you need to change it with the DMV, Social Security, banks, etc, and that takes longer. I still haven't gotten a new passport yet, so the next stage of really changing your name with everything else can take as long as you drag it out, really. Though, I think the certified copies are only good for a year.

I don't know if you would answer this but do I have to give like a serious reason to change my name? And how much in total did you spend counting the traveling?
@copacetic7549
7 жыл бұрын
Because I live in the city, I had an MTA metro card already, but if you're talking single rides, that's about $6 round trip if you don't have something like a monthly unlimited card. $65 for the index number, $35 for the Irish Echo, $6 per certified copies once your name change is approved (I got 5). So in total, that was about $130, if I'm not forgetting anything, not counting travel and copies of stuff I made. I planned for it to cost more, though, just in case. A new NY driver license was about $13. And I still haven't gotten a new passport, which I need to do because the certified copies only hold up for a year I think, and a new passport is about $110. I don't think I needed 5 certified copies, though, because the places I sent the copies, for the most part, didn't actually need the original copies, so I just photocopied the copies so I could keep the original ones. (Am I confusing you yet? haha) Also in terms of a serious reason, I put this: "“My new name fits me much better, I feel more comfortable with it, and I’d like to be known as such in all aspects of my life." I also added one more sentence that I'd been going by the initials of my new name for 6+ years. But honestly, my reason was pretty vague but there was no problem.
