Hey Charlie, Normally with a four wall system there is no end to the pipe, however a PVC cap is made for this purpose. Clean outs are ports installed usually 25' apart to access the system and do periodic system flushes to homes that are effected with iron problems in the ground water.

Hey there, im going to piggy back on most people’s objective in the comments below. I hade a contractor installed the drain tile similar to you here. 4-8” deep. Top of pipe is nearly aligned with top of footer. They also put the same white plastic board about 6 inches up along the foundation wall. It’s been a year since I had it installed and water never gets high enough to enter the pipe. I can see water getting into my block walls and seeping thru cracks during heavy rain. (They did drill weep holes, i have cmu blocks, but they did missed some mortar joints which was never corrected when i ask them to do so) The Only times the sump pit collects water is when the ground water rises into it, never enough to reach the pipe. Therefore I concluded that the water pushing on the wall is taking too long to enter the pipe and slowly going under neath the slab towards the sump pit. Any updates on the systems that you have installed, I am thinking of redoing mines and going deeper towards the bottom of the footer.

Hi Richard, Great comments and very detailed. The pipe should not be level with the top of the footer. It should slope 1/8 per foot from its high point. Sounds like you have a foundation issue rather than a drainage system issue. Lowering the pipe in high water areas sometimes creates other problems. You are welcome to call me at 516 294-8400. Id be happy to work this out with you. Hugo

I'd bring the rock up higher to within 8 inches of ground level. The trench should be lined with non woven permeable geotextile. Then the pipe (6" to 8") corrugated from Baughman (high octane) made of virgin material on the bottom of the fully lined trench. A bit larger rock for faster flow. Burrito wrap the rock 8" below ground level then add dirt to ground level.

Just wondering if that mesh rebar will do anything to reinforce the concrete and prevent cracking when it's resting at the bottom. I've watched slab pours where they use a tool to pull the mesh up towards the middle during a pour so that it's effective.
@mamarrachopunpun

The concrete layer is quite thin, it will do
@UToobin75
2 жыл бұрын
@@mamarrachopunpun That's exactly the problem. The newly laid concrete offers no protection at all and is more likely to crack when it's poured thin. It's window dressing. Everything is completely reliant on the PVC/sump. Any newly laid concrete should match the width of the existing slab. When the concrete is laid thin, if anything goes wrong and water backs up in the trench, water will have a higher likelihood of making its way through the cracks, cold joint, and the open gap in the cove common with the standard open system. I'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN. And flooding will then be widespread and 1000x worse than if they had done nothing at all. Never compromise the integrity of a uniform slab, and never create a pathway for additional groundwater to enter. Retrofit interior drain tile is a total hack job.
@UToobin75

@@mamarrachopunpun And what happens when a waterproofing co. doesn't even do a minimal amount of research on your property or attempt to determine the source of your problem, they open things up and allow in a perpetual supply of groundwater (picture the thumbnail of this video except constantly filled with water) and are then stuck with a sump which NEVER STOPS CYCLING? Happened to me. Had to pay another company to tear it out and now I'm burdened with the tremendous responsibility of how to effectively fill it back in and seal it up. *I'm not a customer of AM Shield.

You added a filter meshing... so when you going to jackhammer the concrete to change the filter? Note to self, EVERY filter needs to be serviced. Use 3” gravel and your shit won’t clog up... and you’re extremely wrong about comments with not going below the footer. That’s exactly where the pipe lays... not next to the footer. Not on top. BELOW!
@robertgregory2618

Exactly how is the filter going to get clogged . There is no dirt above it only concrete. The filter on the bottom is covered with rocks, so it don't matter if it gets clogged which seems highly unlikely. And no don't dig below foundation. Depending on soil it could cave in or weaken.
@hugodesposito6226

Hi Layne, sounds a good debate. NO PIPE OR EXCAVATION SHOULD EVER BE INSTALLED BELOW TO FOOTER. During heavy rains a drainage system installed below the footer may cause a disturbance of the soil directly under the footer. 3" gravel may work for you, however it is not a standard practice in the industry. Thanks for your reply, Sorry it took me 2 years to reply to this.

Thanks for your reply but I think my term of below the footer is taken out of context like CNN likes to do. I’m talking next to the footer, roughly 1/4 of an inch down so all the water can reach the pipe and never have sitting water. I’ve noticed over the years basements that have the drain system installed where on top of the footer always seem to have a slight musty smell
@Nick-gy5gc

For all the youtube armchair contractors out there, let me say this is about as a professional of an install as I've seen. The use of perforated PVC is a great choice. The use of filter fabric on the bottom of the trench seems like a good decision given the clay soil that they are dealing with and if it was not there, the system would become contaminated within a short period of time, rendering it useless. I will say the trench could have been a little deeper and wider, but the poster is correct in that you WILL cause structural damage if you dig below the footing level by causing soil erosion. Clearly they wanted to avoid that. This system will keep that basement dry for many years if not decades if maintained properly. I would have liked to see the drainage pipe glued together. The vapor barrier, I'll take it or leave it as there are advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is that you get the benefit of catching the water that may be leaking through the base of the wall with that drain board, while also maintaining a radon seal. Overall, this appears to be a huge basement to waterproof and a job well done by this crew.

That washed rock can filter the pipe. A filter fabric is eventually gonna get clogged up like a filter does if it isn’t changed. Is there any filter that never change out in any kind of system (car, A/C unit, dehumidifier, etc). Putting the pipe at the bottom of the footer isn’t going to effect the basement walls. The water is going to be at the bottom of the footer. By the time it reaches the pipe it could start to try to go through the concrete slab. Finally, a plastic water barrier or vapor barrier on the wall is going to keep water and moisture in the walls rotting them out causing damage. If you wanna keep water out from your walls. Stop it at the source, the outside. Yes it’s more money, but you wanna spend it now rather than later. Sorry the comment so long, but this person who had this system put in is gonna regret it later.
