Bought a black on brand new in 1990. $15K back then. Black non-Wolfsburg so crank windows and crank sunroof. Not fast but was a joy just to drive. That’s was a steal for $1,500 bucks. Just leave it stock and enjoy.

MK2’s are the best. You should do a 1.8T, 07K, VR6, or 2.0L 16V ABA swap to it

@@vdubhub7078 back in the early 90s, 1 of my best friend had 1. And the goal was to add big body bumpers and factory fog lights and a Vr6. He never got around to doing it. I was hoping he was going to sell the car to me and I was going to do all of that to it. Instead, he sold it to Stan. And Stan, another buddy of ours showed it love, but not the level I was planning on doing to it.... If I can find a 91 or 92 Gli or a Helios, I'm Vr6-ing it. I did/do have a Helios interior for a MK1 Jetta. I may put it in a MK1 Cab or Rabbit... I need to do something with it....

Nice helios gli! I had one many years ago and even though I never got a chance to get it running and driving I still miss it. Love the blue recaros on these, I'm still on the lookout for another one preferably with a vr6 swap.

You noticed also; its an Helios. I would do the exact same thing >> Vr6 swap and I would add big body bumper kit with fog lights.

vr6 is an amazing engine but it kinda takes away from the handling of the light mk2s

The power window switchs constantly fail if it happens when the window is down just pull the switch out of the console and swap it with the one for a different window .you can disassemble and clean the contacts to fix

The original tires were 185/55/15 but 205/50/15 fit your wheels and the car to perfection. With the struts springs and tires the car would turn so hard that I would have to ease up because the oil pressure light will constantly buzz due to all the oil being in the side of the engine instead of the pan. I had thought about installing a oil accumulator system for that issue. A good short shift kit makes the close ratio transmission a dream

Replace the timing belt ahead of schedule the engine is interference and if the belt fails it will bend all 16 valves. The distributor rotor is designed to seize to the distributed shaft when changing simply use screw driver as a chisel and lightly crack it where it mates with the distributor shaft it come right off. If you ever have transmission work done replace the ring gear rivets with grade 8 bolts (rivets break sometimes) make sure your cat is not plugged also the fuel filter. Both will kill power also get the injectors cleaned or run a couple of tanks of fuel system cleaner at minimum.

As far as engine there are power improvements to be had exhaust /cams and so on however the engine is very well matched to the chassis I would get it working perfectly then maybe bring the engine up to euro specs cams. I have driven many cars with hundreds more hp but I still miss that 1.8 16v when driven properly

Additionally make sure you have top quality struts and springs. Cut springs and bad struts will ruin the handling as will dead upper strut bushings or other worn parts including the rack. With the Neuspeed strut spring combo bigger sway bars are not needed
@shanebaldwin5093

I missed the coil overs sorry. look at wear items front and rear bushings for the rack and struts as well as all the suspension keep in mind the rear MK2 suspension is designed for passive rear steering as is flexes it slightly changes alignment to aid cornering, if worn it may make the car dart about even if the front is perfect.

Nice car I purchased a1989 Wolfsburg edition new in 1989 and have some comments for you. Having spent many miles in mine and also in classic muscle cars and modern sports cars. The handling in all respects when the MK2 is in good original condition is sublime at all speeds from autocross speeds to way beyond legal highway speeds. Get a factory manual and get everything back to OEM and you will be more than pleased. Mine was modified with a neuspeed spring / Bilstin strut combo that made it even tighter. Speed is defined by conservation of momentum in this due to the exceptional handling car.

Can’t agree more with the comments about the steering rack. Lol. It can be pretty challenging to keep it in the lanes on highways. I’ve wondered if dropping a mk3 subframes front and back with mk3 rack would make it better.
@vdubhub7078

That would definitely be worth a shot, I'll look into seeing if anybody else has done it. Feels like a death wish driving a Mk2 at highway speeds.
