What kind of clay you can use with this type of kiln? What temperature can it heat up to?

i made one with two fire holes. should i just let one for aeration and the other for firing ? coz mine is barrel and i assume that its needs more fire !

You should really think about lining it with refractory clay or cement because the really fine fibers of the wool batting can degrade and dislodge out of the top during firing and it's like breathing asbestos. If you and everyone around the Kiln are wearing proper respirators it shouldn't be an issue but it's a good idea as a precaution. Good luck with your pottery!

@xXVintersorgXx

3 things.. 1) that wool needs to be coated with a refractory like Mizzou or something similar (greenpatch 421 is commonly used) to seal the fibers. An open flame Venturi burner will dislodge them and you will breathe them in. This can cause silicosis. 2) that can is galvanized steel. Heavy metal zinc poisoning is possible if it gets too hot. Throw it on a camp fire and stay away from it or soak it in an acid like vinegar or muriatic. 3) bad ass job. You just missed some steps
@natewinterstudios
2 ай бұрын
@@xXVintersorgXxthank you! Also don’t forget, this only part 1 of a 4 part series! With this fiber, the exterior of the kiln doesn’t get very hot because the refractory blanket does such a good job insulating. As for the reduction chambers I do burn off the galvanization before using. I also wear gloves and ventilator when operating which also helps protect against the hazardous materials. Wouldn’t you agree?
@xXVintersorgXx
2 ай бұрын
@@natewinterstudiosyes. Commonly these are used for hobby forges in blacksmithing. They need to be coated in a refractory as well. I'll watch the rest of the vids after the response. You want to coat the blanket in a high temperature refractory like Mizzou or greenpatch 421. If this was an electric kiln you wouldn't need it but the burner will be blowing on the blanket dislodging tiny silicon particles into the air. So you either need to coat it or always wear a p100 respirator to protect your lungs

Not quite, it’s basically clay spun into fiber similar to cotton candy. However this fiber does come with a MSDS sheet so it should be handled with caution and PPE.

It's rock wool. It can't cause similar problems as asbestos if breathing it. It can cause silicosis if not correctly sealed in a refractory
