@@MrSchizoid405 you need to do some research. i,m auld enough to know when irish music started in the late 50s early 60s when bands like the clancies and dubliners sprung up and adopted the scottish style.scottish stepdance originated in the hebrides . made its way to canada in the 1600s. fiddle reels /strathpeys are indigenous to scotland as are jigs and hornpipes to england. the fiddle entered ireland in the late 1700s from scotland. 100s of irish fiddle tunes are actualy scottish as are many irish sangs auld and modern. irish dancing on started in ireland in 1895 after some scotsmen invited two irishmen to a st andrews ceilidh night in london (ceilidhs being scottish in origin adopted by the irish who had their first ceilidh a few years later). look up....the globalization of irish stepdance...there are other sites where you will see them wearing kilts, reel shoes and ghillie shoes. all scottish in origin. scottish stepdance is still alive in canada.

@@brucecollins4729 Stop posting your nonsense I debunked already. Scottish step dancing is a modern invention centuries after Irish step dancing was created. the evidence shows that Modern Irish fiddles entered Ireland from Italy after its creation in 1550 and made its way up to Scotland in the 17th century from Ireland, with older forms of fiddles in ireland since the 9th century. See previous Richard head and Sydney's quotes on Irish step dancing and fiddles in the 1500s. And the type of music and step dancing you're referring to is mentioned in America in the 18th and 19th centuries long before your myth story, not a product of the Clancy brothers you moron. Irish step dancing was introduced into Scotland from Ireland in the highlands, but never gained any popularity in wider Scotland, it was in canada from Irish immigrants that adopted Irish dance that the scottish step dancing originated and in canada.. You can't do research you're an idiot.

What I understand is that the English outlawed Irish dancing. The legend/myth I heard was that the point of the dance was that your legs dance around the room while keeping your upper body stiff so when the English saw you thru the window the would see nothing going on. That's a simple brief explanation there's much more interesting stories. Finn McCool, CuCulain etc...I believe the Roman's may have outlawed Irish dancing long before the English did.

My maternal grandfather played Irish dance music about a century ago and people later collected airs from him for publications. I've heard that he said that the Irish dancing style (which was starting then and that everybody now knows) was a recent invention for state-run competitions and actually had no relation whatsoever to normal dancing to Irish music, which was literally whatever one felt like doing. So there was actually no relationship between that Irish dancing style and Irish folk culture or folk music. But, I suppose, by now there actually is. "Begad, but isn't me folk music awful giddy sounding.."

Owen Mcgee idk ,but the gaelic league before independence seem to have been the main driver and before that the french dance masters rather than the state and the CLRG up to present not the state, never heard of the state running irish dance.Another misconception is that the catholic church is responsible for the hands by the side style no while the gaelic leaguers were catholic and had catholic sensibilities it was them rather than the catholic church ,because they wanted to protray the irish as disciplined in contrast to the way we were considered under british rule, they also tried to get rid of the more free moving sean nos style which did not work thankfully its thriving. The gaelic league were also responsible for camogie more associated now with the GAA.Only for the gaelic league and the GAA we wouldn't have a country however there is something fake about feis style dancing and sean nos and older forms of the dance are more authentic.
