That mom is insufferable. I’d jump off the mountain if I had to deal with that shrill for another day. Every mom was exactly alike in the 1950’s. No wonder the boomers revolted in the 1960’s

Summer of 1974, our family drove to the summit, of Pike's Peak. Just before our ascent, the temperature had reached 100. Sometime later, at the summit, we had an impromptu snowball fight, wishing that we had brought warmer clothing.

These old promos show you a tour of the west by rail. 10 years later it was going to beaches by air liner. The tourists lost interest in the west , Times changed

Rhetorical question; why are they dressed so nicely? Amtrak pajama customers nowadays dress like a bag of dirty laundry. Why, I know! They have respect for themselves, AND their fellow travelers! Always dress sharp when you travel.

Boy, you said it! I've ridden Amtrak only twice. Once in 1985 and then again in 2015. What a difference in clientele! This society has *really* fallen off of the proverbial cliff.

When they were showing all the kids on the train I remembered that I would have been 4 at the time. And we moved to Colorado in 1960. So strange to see what it was like back then.

The Denver Zephyr is one of the many historic trains that are a part of history. It's sad, really, the onslaught of air transportation brought on the deterioration of the rail infrastructure. With the abandonment of the railway systems including the rights of way, is it any wonder that the Amtrak system as it is presently constituted is a bare bones system of hit and miss locations. Bring back "The Floridian", A relaxing ride to Miami from Chicago should be more direct, rather than the present round about journey which dictates going to Washington to change trains for one of the remaining trains from the defunct Seaboard Coastline, or Southern Railway. Does that cog railway still operate from Colorado Springs to the top of Pikes Peek?

Yes, the Cog Railway still goes up Pikes Peak. The train is different. It's a Swedish built one.

lol the boy sounds like he has slight mental issues. The highest luxury room on the Rails at the time was actually a Drawing Room. Nothing says comfort like a chain smoker sitting behind you or next to you. lol. How did people starve in the 50s anyway? a loaf of bread was like 15 cents and a gallon of milk was like 30, a whole steak probably cost $1.50. Technically speaking the train from Denver to Colorado Springs was called the Royal Gorge.

I can't believe I found a video on the Denver Zephyr. When I was a little boy I rode the Denver Zephyr from McCook, Nebraska to Denver with my grandmother. I remember eating in the dining car and riding in the vista dome. It's like it was yesterday.

Whilst working for TWA in Denver in 1970 my train-buff instincts took hold. I booked a return trip ex Denver to Omaha in one of the parlour-cars. Excellent dinner and breakfast in the dining car. I don't recall the train being particularly well patronised, which is why CB&Q management was keen to eliminate the service before Amtrak took over.

@Alice Lane We are so glad you don’t have access to any magic wand 🥴🥴 Some people enjoy the speed and access to air travel. Just because I doesn’t float your boat that doesn’t mean everyone should not be able to do it. Trains don’t make everyone calm.....js
