All the actors - Michael Landon, Lorne Green, Dan Blocker were so close in actual age to the other.

Lorne Green was 21 years older than Michael Landon, so he really was old enough to be his father. Dan Blocker split the difference between them, more or less.

Fun fact: Soupy Sales was originally thought to be a fourth son that had been shunned by the family for his habit of talking to dogs.

Yeah true. Maybe it was for the real motherless families back then to show them that it's not that unpopular. There were a lot of divorces back then. My parents split up in 1962 when I was five and we live with dad for a while. There were plenty of others like the Ozzie and Harriet show that portrayed the normal family setting.

I remember Dan Blocker dressed as Hoss and hawking the Chevy van. I'm sure he got paid well for it. As for Roberts, he always said he left the show because his character was being treated like a kid. And he was right, if you watch the show the adult children are always being treated like hired hands by their pa. Lorne Greene begged Roberts not to leave such a successful show at the height of its popularity. Roberts did and his career never recovered. But Roberts never regretted his decision.

Here is irony; Dan Blocker, Michael Landon, Pernell Wilde, and Lorne Green were all within 10 years of age of the other. So it was a very excellent show, but Lorne Greene in no way could have been a father of 3 by age 10. On Bonanza 'Hoss' real name was Eric Cartwright

I think these lines are from the MAD Magazine satire of this show called Bananaz. I especially remember "Ox's" lines "Pass the steak..." etc.

I wonder what was up with all those mother-less homes in those 50's and 60's television. My Three Sons. Family Affair. Bonanza. Something about no mother. . . .. . . . Go figure.

@ronetteloverz Hop Sing: "Hoss! Why you eat so much my food! Sherriff Roy Coffee: "I'll need you all to come down to the jail with me, you've been accused of murder" Paw: "Not again. Why bother Roy when you know we'll just be exonerated by the end of the show? I mean we get accused of murder every other week." Hoss: "Pass the gravy, oh wait is that a drunken homeless bum out there, let me go and help him, maybe get him a job at the Ponderosa" Paw: "No wonder you can't find a girl"

Obviously people recognize a comment about "hunting falcons and thunderbirds" as competing with Ford. Landon's remark about cardinals being extinct refers to the Ford Cardinal, which the company decided not to offer, three months before U.S. production was to start. The tooling was sent overseas and the vehicle produced as a German Ford. It would have been the first U.S. car with a V-4 engine and the first since the 1930's Cord with front wheel drive.
