Gee willikers, not one single comment on this classic gem. A world gone by. I used to watch this anytime between Thanksgiving and Christmas depending on when it was broadcast. I have the DVD as well. only wish my parents were still alive and my siblings were around.

One of the best movies of all times. I watch this when I need to be reminded of hope and goodness and I am trying to be kind and patient like Sister Benedict. If you love this movie watch, "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby. It's another classic!

I just watched this movie....AGAIN!. It's unfortunate, but we'll never see the likes of these sorts of movies again. I too love "Going My Way." My very favorite movie of all is "It's a Wonderful Life." QUALITY and good life lessons played out on the silver screen. I can't get enough of these movies. I agree....."One of the best movies OF ALL TIME!"

I'm 17 but when I was younger I went to Catholic School and we had nuns that still wore a habit, there mission was not to teach but when they said they may close they school the sisters were the first ones there, they were old but God did we love them, we used to go to mass 3 times a week, 3 prayers a day and Grotto twice a week. They really were nice nuns, they would be a shoe in for a remake of this movie.

Yes,this ending was incredible. Yes,it is very relevant for today. "Going My Way" is,too, and so many from that time. It's nice to know that many of us share these experiences,as a nation, and one ,great ,big family. Social media has so many positive benefits for us and is returning the extended, the consanguinal family back. What we feared would make things more and more impersonal, has rewarded us with the exact opposite. Incredible.

I ,TOO, LOVE THESE WONDERFUL, MEANINGFUL MOVIES. I AM NOT CATHOLIC, AND PROUD OF THAT TOO. AFTER ALL, GREAT MUSIC AND GREAT WORKS SHOULD BE SPIRITUAL, NOT RELIGIOUS, SO WHY SHOULD IT MATTER WHERE OR HOW YOU WORSHIP?
@pwthcim

Your reply is offensive! This is like saying "I am not Black and proud of that, too." Shame on you. It does matter where and how we worship. There is only one Truth and that is Jesus who said "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life." Are you telling me that paganism or even Satan worship is equal to what Jesus, God, is, was, and always will be--love and truth?

That was visible, under Ingrid Bergman's name (which is the case, she was lent to RKO for this movie by David O Selznick). I suspect that the gray bar stated something like "An RKO Radio Release" since they no longer hold the rights and it is under the title.

Are you being serious or facetious? The "Under God" wasn't officially added until 1954, which would explain why it's not in this movie. It didn't yet exists.

@weirdpx3 I would like to see nuns wearing habits again---habits may seem superflous, but I think they are an outside sign of inner faith---

@TheChaz2011 actually it's only Benedictine nuns that don't wear traditional habits (and that's by choice, some can still opt to) the only reason why is after the 1970's they saw it as irrelevant because of the changing generation. A lot of what you're saying about nuns isn't true, I would know because I'm currently going through my discernment; I'm choosing which convent to join as I'm in the process to become a sister of the Catholic church.

In our current society. Nuns are ashamed to wear the traditional habit. If I see anything similar it is usually a muslim woman. Nuns promote abortion, fight against anything truly Catholic. I appreciate Mother Angelica and EWTN. God Bless their efforts.. Chas

Different studios, so I don't think so. Going My Way was made at Paramount, The Bells of St. Mary's at RKO. Adjoining studios in those days but separate. Bing Crosby was with Paramount, Leo McCarey was with RKO.

WHY doesn't TCM show this classic gem? Also Going My Way? THey have such insipid programming -- show the same film every two days and yet these two great Christmas movies are nowhere to be seen!! Too Catholic? I love these movies. and I am Catholic and proud of it.

I will pray for you during this time of discernment. Please check out the cloister outreach website. Yes!! It's true regarding my comments. However, in recent times orthodox communities have formed and are doing very well with vocations. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal located in the South Bronx, Mother Angelica's community of nuns, Sisters of Life are some examples. Best Wishes!! Cheers Chaz

Ingrid bergmen was from SWeeden. At about 12:30 She said that she was from Sweeden. The Sweedsare not Catholic. They are Lutheran. They also have nuns in the Eastern Orthodos Churches as well as in the Anglegan(Episcopal) and some Lutheran denominations.

What great lessons are taught in this movie. If you notice though, when the children recite the pledge of allegiance, the "Under God" part was omitted. As it turns out, that part was not added until 1954 under Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower. So that part was NOT in the original composition as we are told by Conservatives today.

I take issue with your comment about my country. My national's anthem mean pride and solidarity. People from all across the world wants to be apart of the most accomplished and freest country in the world. U.S.A. isn't prefect, however, our constitution places the U.S.A. in a position to become better. Sadly, I admit, poor republican leadership, business corruption and corrupt legal system has set this country back. However, the Constitution allows for fixes other nations can't say same.

What puzzled me about certain scenes in this film is that even though this was the pre-Vatican II Catholic church minus all of the erroneous modernist changes, the children in this Catholic school are all wearing casual clothing, not a uniform. In the beginning of the film as Sister Benedict is introducing Fr. O'Malley to the curriculum outside as they are reciting the Pledge of Allegience, the word "God" is omitted.

I don't know about the Catholic stuff because I am not Catholic. I can answer the other question about "under God" in the pledge. That wasn't added until the 1950's. The truth is it didn't have all that much to do with religion but the fight against "godless communism". Conservatives act like it was always there and don't know that it really had more to do with politics than religion. lol

"The father's a member of the parish I presume", Fr O'Malley asks the Sister regarding who was responsible for the kittens. She seems a bit embarassed at the subject matter and changes the subject, saying she will tell Sister Superior he is there. Nuns and sex seeemed an awkward combination in the 1940's.

Because you didn't recite the pledge is why you have no allegiance to THE U.S.A. Every nation has a routine that builds patriotism. Only in the U.S.A do you get to openly ridicule the tradition.
