$55,000 as a Rookie! Good Lord that’s Awesome, for someone just coming into the industry. That’s rare for a new trucker Rush. But you did that!!

It's below average to be honest. Tanker drivers make more than that at their first year. As a HAZMAT driver you can make 65-70 first year and this is easy work.

@@RushinTruckin I truly can NOT give you any recommendation as far as a company simply because they all are different and all of them have goods and bads. But look for Airgas for instance. Check Indeed and Simply Hired there are a bunch.

Hey man. Appreciate the candor. I’ve watched a few of your videos and have subscribed. Due to lay-off and long time itch, after 25 years doing market research I’m getting my CDL-A and plan to go solo OTR. I’ve done a lot of research into it (as a researcher no surprise, eh?) and know I’ll enjoy it. My kids are grown, I’m divorced, so home time is not an issue. Just about to start driver school private 1 on 1. My thinking is I’ll have options rather than having to drive for a particular company for my rookie year. If your comfortable sharing your email, I’d love to get in touch. Thanks again for the real experiences and numbers from your first year. Stay safe!

58% d&h?? I'm with Millis, we actually ran into each other a few times when I was still with my trainer, I think that was around when you were leaving. There's no way I'm north of 10 or 15% d&h since I got in my truck in October, one live load after another. Sitting waiting to get reloaded at Midwest Warehouse right now. Just picked up a new Strat so at least I have that to kill the time lol

Thanks for the video. I've been watching you from the beginning last December. I drive a reefer sprinter locally and want to get into semi trucking but I feel like I'd die from being lonely. Did you feel at all like that when you decided to try it out last year? I'm pretty much sold on hauling cement locally here but over the road seems so interesting to me to travel to all the different places/landscapes. I hope I can find a happy medium.
@RushinTruckin

Shawn Shelhamer thanks for being a loyal follower, Shawn! Can it get lonely out here? Absolutely! I’m ok with that, though. I’m pretty independent and like my alone time so this fits me well. If you’re someone who gets their energy from being around people then this may not be for you. What I tell people is...what do you have to lose? If you’re constantly thinking and dreaming about it then give it a shot. Worst case is you don’t like it and go back to local. One mistake that’s made mentally is the ones who get into this to be sightseers. Yes, you get to see the country (which is great), but you won’t have time to stop at landmarks and sightsee unless you get lucky and overnight close and Uber to them.

It’s a double edged sword for sure. On one hand, it’ll teach you good following distance and other mirror checking habits. On the other hand, if the results are tied to your paycheck (safety bonus) then, yeah, it makes you paranoid

Paul Silva sorry for late reply, Paul. There are a few ways to get into the industry; 1) go to a carrier specific school like Millis, Knight, Swift, TMC, Prime, etc. These usually come with a certain length contract you have to work for them in exchange for them training you at a greatly reduced price or even free 2) attend an independent CDL school like Road Masters that will train you in an accelerated environment. Once you finish that program, a bunch of carriers will send in their recruiters to try and get you to drive for them. A lot of them will offer to reimburse your CDL school tuition (cuz it can cost upwards of $7,000), in exchange for a contract or you can choose to not sign a contract and not get the money back. 3) this once requires a ton of cash - borrow or rent a truck to take your road test in, get your CDL , buy a truck, then lease it on to a carrier that will allow it. This way is called being an Owner Operator. You own your own business and are responsible for most or all of the costs. For this route, it is HIGHLY advised you pay cash for the truck AND have a MINIMUM of $50,000 cash in a liquid account to pay for maintenance and have as an emergency fund Hope this helps
