This was the sea-change game for the Nebraska football program. This was the end of them as a national power. In fact, I would say that this was the single most damaging defeat suffered by any program in the last 20 years in terms of what followed. They got beat so bad that it was a reputation-destroyer. The blowout loss to Miami in the Rose Bowl only served as confirmation.

The strength of their program was the walk-on tradition and development of mediocre players. They always had fresh bodies that were willing to punish themselves to give the starters a good look. If you walked on to Nebraska, you were on the team. It was about what can I do for the team. But with today’s millennials having less interest in sports the walk on thing is pretty much dead.

walterlv01: Single most damaging defeat in 20 years? Not even close. Hell, this game didn't even keep them out of the NC. This is not how it works. You think if Nebraska had won this game they would have gone on to be a top ten to top five team every year after that to this day? First, Nebraska had already slipped from dominance. In 2000 they got plastered by OU who won the NC. In this season, Nebraska was still a great team, just not at the top. The next year is when they really got exposed multiple times when all the talent and well coached players of Osborne ran out. I mean, you could say this game marked the beginning of the end, and certainly a tough defeat, big win for Colorado, but this one game was not the cause of their fall, more like the result.

Don't forget, Nebraska responded with a 27-7 run after Colorado jumped out to their 35-3 lead. After Colorado made it 42-16 in the second quarter, Colorado went well over a quarter without scoring. The death knell for Nebraska in this game was the Diedrick fumble at the goal line when it was 42-23 Colorado. But as a Husker fan, I give Colorado a lot of credit with 20 straight points having their lead cut to 12. I thought at 42-30 we had a chance. The Buffalos had other plans

@@shayhicks7682 What was the mindset of Colorado fans after being up 35-3 and finding themselves only up 12 points (42-30) at the end of the third quarter? gynandroidhead the only time I remember getting a little nervous was in the third quarter and Nebraska had the ball at midfield down 42-30. We got Nebraska to punt though and then started to move the ball when the quarter ended. I felt we only needed one long drive and a touchdown to go up 19 for the lead to be safe, which we did pretty early in the quarter. I can’t really speak to the mood of the stadium as I watched the game from home with a watch party. My dad was pretty nervous though until the first interception crouch threw in the quarter. Even when we were up 35-3 he kept saying stuff like “it’s really early” and “their #1 for a reason”. I remember that very vividly. Overall though I feel like CU fans were confident, it just felt different than years past.
