They forgot about it because they were focused on the pass play before Johnson clocked the ball. So in their mind they didn't register the play to clock the ball. Its funny that they clock the ball twice in the same attempt to get in on a series. As a Husker fan it's funny we had a miracle play against Missouri also. Except ours wasn't controversial like this one. Refs now wear a band on their hand that goes across the fingers to tell them which down it is. As long as they remember to adjust this band, this error shouldn't happen again.

Aside from the extra down, mishandled clock, and missed try, there is some noteworthy material in this game. Andy Reid was the O-Line Coach at Mizzou in ‘90. Also, current Chiefs OC is Eric Bieniemy (Buff RB in video). Buffs HC, Bill McCartney, a former Mizzou player admitted that he made mistakes in handling the game after retiring in ‘98. The officiating crew was suspended immediately afterwards. However, the Big Eight commissioner denied the game to be forfeited by the Buffs to a lesser Missouri team. Further, on fifth down, Stacy Elliott (Ezekiel Elliott’s father) is in on the tackle. Mizzou’s OC for this game was Dirk Koetter who was the Buccaneers HC until he was fired in 2018.

The sideline down marker and scoreboard down indicator were at fault here. In fact, the announcers were just as confused as the players and coaches: First at 3:55 of this video, you can hear the play-by-play guy correct himself on the down. Then at 4:35 of this video, both the play-by-play and color commentator are confused - they go back and forth about which down it was. Finally at 6:20, after the TRUE 3rd down play fell short, the play-by-play guy says, "They have to hurry up and spike it now!" Colorado did spike it, though the spike was actually on 4th down. So the players, the coaches and even the announcers in the booth were fooled by the erroneous down marker. And seeing that Colorado QB Charles Johnson looked toward the sideline, and presumably the down marker that said "3", just before taking the snap and spiking it, it's understandable the Big 8 Conference did not forfeit the game in favor of Missouri. Of course, Colorado went on to win the National Championship in football that year, and that is the only reason we remember this 5th down.

Scott Schmittel They never ruled the first play didn't count. Even the guy who held the down marker admitted publicly it was a miscount of downs.
@scottschmittel3639
10 жыл бұрын
MKrip808 It all comes down to whether or not the play (Johnson's first spike to stop the clock) at 3:10 counted. 1. Johnson spikes the ball to stop the clock. One of the refs rules that the play didn't count because the chains weren't set. 2. The chains say "2" but the refs say "1". Bieniemy run is stopped. CU calls a TO to discuss strategy on the assumption that it's now 2nd down. 3. Bieniemy run stopped again. 4. Johnson spikes the ball to stop the clock. 5. Johnson keeper ruled a TD (controversial as well, separate discussion). So I ask you. How would it not have been a royal screw job on CU if the refs had decided to "correct" the downs after the 4th play (the 2nd spike)? Why would Johnson have spiked it on 4th down? Because all the Buffs thought it was 3rd down. If they'd known it was 4th down they'd have run a different play, don't you think?
@fierce-green-fire8887
10 жыл бұрын
Scott Schmittel Once a mistake it made, it impacts both sides. The question is do you decide to let the mistake ride or do you change it? In some sports, instant replay has been their answer that the correct thing to do is to change the ruling on the field. In some sports they do not have the ability to change the ruling on the field, no instant replay. CU made the decision to run the plays they ran based upon what the refs said were the downs. They took that chance. They knew they were given an extra down, it's not their job to correct the refs. But when you are taking a chance playing with what is given to you, you also take the chance of things being corrected. But for you to rationalize why it would be wrong to correct a mistake because it would "cheat" CU out of their win is laughable. I understand what you are saying, but you are kinda over looking the clear and present fact that giving CU 5 tries to punch it in royally screwed Missouri. Sorry, I don't have much sympathy for CU if they couldn't get the TD in before requiring 5 downs. If they were national champs that year they shouldn't have been in a position to require one of the most egregious reffing mistake in college football history to win the game. CU was screwed because they weren't playing a good game. They were screwed because they were in that position. It's like suggesting that one single play decides a game, the game is 4 quarters long with many plays. In other words, you are saying once a mistake is done, you can't undo it because it changes the outcome. I think many people disagree with that philosophy, Or, in this case, you are saying when a mistake is made that allows a losing team to win a contest, you can't correct the mistake because the team that was losing would not be able to win without the mistake and this is not fair...never mind that the mistake was not fair for the winning team, which lost due to the mistake. Seems like a case of double standards.

So the controversy is: -5th down. -Stopping the clock at 8 seconds when it shouldn't have. -The QB possibly being down before getting in the end zone on the last play. -Lets also add that at 33-31 Colorado would've had to attempt the PAT because Missouri would've had a chance to block the kick and run it back or create turnover and run it back and either of those two scenarios tie the game. Most likely Colorado takes a knee to avoid that plus even if the miracle two pt turnover runback happens Colorado remains undefeated as they had no OT back then in College Football.

Colorado only ran 3 plays and downed the ball twice. The second time they downed the ball was on 4th down, when the marker said it was 3rd down. Nobody, the officials or Missouri's team or coaches said anything about it before they downed the ball on 4th down, or after they downed the ball, or even after Colorado scored. For people out there that think Colorado realized the marker was wrong, why would they take a chance to down the ball on fourth down, when they could have easily ran the same play they ran on 5th down, instead of stopping the clock?

I remember during this same year, the same thing almost happened in a Monday night game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. Broncos were trailing with under 2 minutes left. The down marker said 2nd down, but it was really 3rd down, and Al Michaels was right on top of it until the officials corrected themselves when the down marker later said 3rd down when it was really 4th down. What a contrast to these announcers. How could they miss that?

Not really. Many people watching live simply thought the first play (spike) was snapped before the game clock had resumed. The Buffs called their next plays based on this assumption. Bottom line, there was a misunderstanding on the first play of the series. The Buffs rushed spiked the ball to stop the clock. The side judges hadn't set the chains so the refs assumed it wasn't a real play. From that point forward, Colorado designed their strategy based on the assumption that the first spike hadn't counted. You can't fault them for that. Surely they wouldn't have spiked the ball on 4th down to end the game.

Holy crap wow, I remember watching this game but the really amazing part isn't even the refs screwing up. CU never once acted like they knew, but that isn't super surprising. What is absolutely amazing is that no one with Missouri realized what was happening either. And possibly even more amazing is the announcers didn't recognize it either. They did realize they had it wrong when they called second down first down, and corrected themselves, but then when it was fourth down the color commentator was agreeing with CU's decision to spike the ball, which of course was a horrible idea, and then when CU scored on 5th down neither announcer even mentioned that there might be a problem, and carried on announcing like they would have if nothing untoward had transpired. I think it is entirely possible that not a single person in the entire stadium realized what occurred.

I don't know how anybody can "argue" about this for years to come... there's no arguing these basic facts: 1) CU got an extra (5th) down. 2) The clock inexplicably stopped with 8 seconds remaining, and stayed stopped for a good 5 seconds while the ref was signaling to run the clock, allowing CU to get off another play- the 4th down spike, and 3) Johnson CLEARLY did not get into the end zone. His butt was on the turf and the ball was at about the 1 yd line before he reached the ball over his head and across the line. Multiple video replays and photos taken clearly prove that. This was an ILLEGITIMATE "win" and shame on Bill McCartney for not admitting so at the time. Poor sportsmanship and as far as I'm concerned, the Buffs were NOT champions that year. (and yes, I was one of those kids on the sideline at the end, and I'm still pissed about this BS)

Im a die hard CU Buff fan and I truly believed once the coaching staff saw the down marker didnt change from 2nd to 3rd, they were gonna run their chances and if they didnt change the down indicator before EB's run, they were gonna try and squeeze another play in. Charles Spikes the ball and now it's too late, it's 4th down. Why do you think some of the CU players werent hurrying? They knew they lost on EB's failed run. But Someone alerted them to hurry up and line up spike the ball while the marker said 3rd down. Teams do it today... A questionable call, they hurry to the line of scrimmage before the replay official stops the play and reviews the play. Great coaching to be honest. Everyone was in the game. I do agree, someone from the Mizzou coaching staff should have ran on the field and grabbed the ball and said, review the last 4plays! Game is over! Lol

Well, I happened to be watching the game live and I had the same reaction, "Wait a minute, it's not first down. It's second down. Oh, I guess that spike didn't count." Why spike the ball to stop the clock if the clock isn't running? As for stopping the clock to let the players get out of the pile, they do that to keep the defense from holding guys down to run time. I've never seen a penalty called for that.

I have. Defensive Delay of the Game. And, to be fair, this was the first year it was legal to spike the ball to stop the clock in NCAA. Still doesn't excuse what happened. CU didn't win this game, but 25 years later there's nothing anyone can do about it now. Some stray observations here, having watched the entire drive for the first time just now: 1. What was the deal with Mizzou's turf? Was everyone slipping all day or was it just CU? If the latter, then the training staff didn't pack the right cleats. CU wins this with twenty seconds to spare if the tight end doesn't fall down (untouched) on his way to the end zone. 2. It was pretty loud and chaotic at the end, but I have no idea how the linesman doesn't remember to flip the down marker after the first CU spike inside the five yard line? That appears to be where the extra down was added. 3. CU doesn't win the national championship (still it's only one) without this game. Interestingly, if that happened today a school would still have a chance at the championship as long as they polled high enough to get into the playoff. Thanks for posting!
