The version of the how Danny Rolling was identified as the Gainesville Ripper is interesting. I’ve watched multiple documentaries and never heard that version before. At the time, police were trying to identify the unknown killer and an unknown bank robber. At a briefing about the bank robber, one of the detectives working on the Gainesville Ripper case was present. When the briefer mentioned the bank robber was missing the tips of two fingers on his left hand, the detective stood up and shouted, “Holy Shit.” That was when law enforcement discovered the murderer and the bank robber were the same person. At the time, Danny Rolling was in custody awaiting trial on a robbery charge. Since the murders had stopped, law enforcement thought it was possible the offender had been arrested. They decided to conduct DNA testing on all male inmates arrested during a period of time after the last murder. This is how Danny Rolling was identified as the Gainesville Ripper.

A few trivia/corrections I'd like to add: - Robert Hansen was eventually sentenced to life with no parole and died in prison in 2014 of natural causes. - Mark Goudeau was active during the time Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman (AKA the Phoenix Serial Shooters) were also on the loose. Phoenix wasn't a good place to be in the mid 2000s, apparently. - Richard Ramirez killed 14 people, not 9. - Wes Craven got the idea for Scream when he saw news reports about Danny Rolling' killing spree. - Gacy spent his time in death row painting creepy clown pictures. One of those graces the cover of the debut album of Acid Bath, When the Kite String Pops. One of my fav albums ever, I might add. - If Donald Harvey's 87 victims tally is accurate, he would have been America's most prolific serial killer until Samuel Little's apprehension in 2012. Little had 60 confirmed victims, and confessed to 93. Harvey would eventually be murdered in prison in 2017. - Albert DeSalvo was stabbed to death in prison a few years after his conviction, which has given rise to all manner of conspiracy theories regarding the Boston Strangler case. - Benjamin Atkins was sentenced to life in prison, and died there in 1997 of AIDS-related illness. - Charles Ray Hatcher chose the coward's way out and hanged himself in his cell shortly after his conviction in 1984. He only had 5 confirmed victims, although he indeed confessed to killing 16. - Charles Starkweather is technically considered a spree killer, not a serial killer. He was still a POS that killed a lot of people, so it doesn't really matter. - David Parker Ray is technically an alleged serial killer, since he wasn't actually convicted of any murder. Since he died in 2002, a few years after being imprisoned, we probably will never know the true extent of his crimes (for the record, I do believe he most likely killed a lot of people). - Rodney Alcala died in 2021, not in 2001.

38:00 there's actually a really badass story about the couple that Wayne dance tried to kill. The husband wasn't absolute legend. He tied the husband up downstairs after shooting him. He saw that he was dead. So what did he do? He went upstairs to assault the man's wife. The man broke free from his bindings and loaded a rifle he had in the basement with him. Instead of going upstairs to confront Nance he banged the gun on the wall so that Nance would come down to investigate. When they appeared at the top of the hallway, he was shot. The husband then, with a series gunshot wound, chased him upstairs and beat him to death. I wish they would make a movie about it!
