Pronation and overpronation are two different things. Kipchoge's running style is considered almost a 100% perfect, state of the art. Even Kiptum does not run as beautifully. The thing about running shoe stores is that they naturally have a vested interest in not only selling you a pair of shoes but also the notion that you need them. If they told you that any neutral mid-drop road running shoe worked for you as long as you don''t want to go too fast and far too soon (what they should tell 90% of their customers), they'd be out of business and people would order their shoes online. So the trick they do is that they will point at your natural pronation with the goal to have you freak out.... just out of curiosity can you find a scientific paper or study that proves that stability shoes actually help reduce injury... I can't....isn't that odd?

Yes this ! As a PTA I’ve been saying this … pronation is completely normal. Look at the bottom of any pair of worn out shoes young and old. The most worn off part should be where the outer heel lands and the big toe pushes off…That’s pronation. When shoes try to prevent that it’s likes casting a foot. It starts to weaken important muscles you naturally use when barefoot.

I’m looking at his stride in slow motion. As with many great marathoners, they maintain an efficient center of gravity. When pushing off, his feet are at a near balanced state, no supination or pronation.. as he moves to the second phase of his stride, his ankles turn slightly in to a supination angle… I saw very little pronation in his stride… also, traditional runners go from landing on the heal and rolling to the toe. Watch his landing… this is what makes these runners world class… mid foot landing, quick heal touch and push back up from the toe…

Actually, pre the modern late 1960 to 170's Cushioned Running shoe, people ran this same way. I run similar since 2009 due to my hip on one side paying for it and my heels hurting the next day. This happened when I had a hip get tight and pop on a Treadmill run where I had to immediately stop. I also if on treadmill run 1--2% if not doing hills as this has seemed to help some otherwise flat getting tight hip issues I get when running on treadmill as you are doing straight line running only. The only thing I do not do is run with as much back leg to the butt as most elite runners do especially the African runners.

Because someone does something well doesn't mean his body is working at 100% efficiency. If it didn't pronate, would he have even better results? There is a reason why people say that about pronating. Because pronation causes injuries over time. The constant torque in the joints. Orthopedics and chiropractors are based on this fact. The foot leg back and overall body pain associated are real. When the body is properly aligned, it works better.
@stripeybeast

I think it depends on the nature of the pronation. While kipchoge’s foot is pronated, it’s also under his body and he’s putting weight on the outside of his foot. When we see pronation in people with poor athleticism it’s often causing the weight to roll onto the inside of the foot (flat footed) which is awful for the knee. I think it has less to do with the angle of the foot and more to do with how you’re distributing your weight onto the foot.

I also if on treadmill run 1--2% if not doing hills as this has seemed to help some getting otherwise on flat I am getting tight hip issues I get when running on treadmill as you are doing straight line running only. The only thing I do not do is run with as much back leg to the butt as most elite runners so especially the African or Japanese runners unless I am thinking about that/going full speed, but these runners seem to run all the time even slower runs with the leg up to the butt or at least at 90% angle that I often do not get.

He’s so skinny it’s probably doesn’t even take a major toll on his body… it might just be his secret to better his stride, fatigue less and dampens the constant joint forces by engaging his IT band more as he lands very close to his center gravity. After all proper squats and deadlifts are also performed with toes slightly outward. Maybe that’s where he gets his explosive stride.
@Radabard

Hi, this is incorrect. Even though he is the fastest, his technique actually still has a lot of room for improvement. The way to generate maximum strength with the greatest efficiency in any motion is to fully activate the muscular chain responsible for the motion. In running, this chain runs from the neck down the back, down the inside of the leg, underneath the arch of the foot, and ends at the big toe. The ideal version of the running motion is to flex all those muscles in tandem, causing the big toe to "screw" into the ground much like how a professional boxer would "screw" their fist when throwing a punch. The pronation is a result of a lack of strength at the ankles to engage them in this full motion. He is collapsing at the ankles every time and losing a LOT of energy trying to bounce off of them when they aren't fully engaged.

Why such emphasis on the peripherals? Feet are downstream of the real action. Hips and shoulders. Notice how stable they are. As a result, see how little lateral head movement there is? What movement is between the hips. Now compare that with your hobby jogger at a local event. Heads are like windshield wipers. Forgettabout da feet. Look up the chain.

This is much more natural than learning. Different runners possess different physical attributes. Some with best performance don't run like Eliud. Physical and mental abilities are not learned. Talents are not learned, they are given. We either have them or not!!! People say those guys coming from that region are superior on that. Generally it can be yes, on average. However, the same performance can be achieved by a person who doesn't originate from the area of the runners.

One word of caution: Just because "the greatest runner in the world"s body allows him to do this doesn't mean it's right or natural for most people. That said, I do agree that the foot is designed to be landed in the pad, not in the ball as most coaches encourage. This is specifically why I say "I'm a fore-foot runner" rather than "I land on the balls of my feet". But when people say heel running is OK because many of the best runners in the world run this way, I must vehemently disagree: just because they can doesn't mean you should!
