If you have already tried front squats and find they don't work for you, do a movement where the weight is waaaaay out in front of you. This would be squatting with an safety squat bar, I actually feel tension in my quads and hamstrings as opposed to back and gluten with these, a strongman style sandbag/atlas stone/keg lift, these will work as a counter weight keeping your torso vertical and putting the stress on your legs, they are also very applicable to real life.

i am 6'4 and i find that i would subconsciously do the step over on hack squat because i couldn't engage quads well. if you can get ankle mobility + squat shoes with raised heel, you can try high bar with low weight for high rep and focus on engaging inner quad muscles, or bulgarian split squat is really nice as well.

I have long femurs and I always squat high bar, however when the weight gets heavy it mostly turns into good morning squat and I can't keep upright torso. What's your advice? Also what reps and set ranges would recommend for high bar squat. I really need to strengthen my quads as they are limiting factor in my squat.
@mr.vercetti6955
2 жыл бұрын
I have long femurs as well, and normal squatting actually works my posterior chain more than my quads. What can help here is elevating you heels. I elevate my heels with plates and with squat shoes, that is a really good quad builder. You will probably use less weight, but your torso will be more upright and you will be able to squat deeper and that equals more quad gains. Just break at the knees and hips at the same time, dont just push your knees forward because that can cause your spine to flex at the bottom. Besides that, don't max on this variation, do lots of volume with something around 8-15 reps and you're good

@Batman Lack of bracing is a possible cause, not THE cause. Weak quads, weak core, lack of ankle mobility, or simply just bio mechanics can play a major role. Honestly, the most immediate solution would be to just front squat instead.

Experiment with heel elevation, breaking at the knees, stance and bar placement. I have gone from squat mornings to a very upright squat by getting squat shoes, breaking at the knees, going medium wide stance with external rotation in knees and feet and mid bar placement on the back which helps with upper back tightness for me. Leg extensions are my main accessory. 12-20 rep range as well.

@talllifts174
2 жыл бұрын
If you have long femurs you will never have upright torso when squatting. Go look at some starting strength videos. They teach a good way to do low bar. If you're getting folded over too much play with your stance (closer - wider) play with your bar positioning (more toward your trap rather than rear delt). It's a leqrning proces and there is no single "right" answer for everybody. Every body is built differently. Your goal isn't to squat upright but to squat safe and efficient based on your biomechanics.

@@talllifts174 wouldn't elevating heels create artificial dorsiflexion- thus keep a more upright torso(and a more quad dominant squat)? I've been lifting the past year, but my legs are lacking... I'm not tall. 5'9", but I'm all legs. My legs make up two-thirds of my height, lol. So, traditional front squats are a no-go. Close stance high bar squats are as ugly as can be. For competition, I squat in Olympic lifting shoes and use a low bar position, which forces me to lean over from the start. I try to pretend my back is a slab of granite. Static, and rigid. The angle stays the same throughout the entirety of the lift
@Bjorn808

Dumb question: you don't train your quads enough with the squat when your femurs are long. Because you shift the weight to your posterior chain. So let's say I train my quads in another way. Is my new found quad size actually going to help me with my squat, since I had to isolate them, because I was hardly using them to begin with? Like am I going to automatically use them more now in my squat?
@talllifts174
6 күн бұрын
@@Bjorn808 In my opinion, the quad size helps but only if you actually gain quad size. Even this is pretty hard to do. Also if they're bigger they should be stronger but it's not only that, it's also because of the bigger quad size your leverages improve ever so slightly. The bigger the quad the "shorter" your leg gets if that makes sense. Also, when you actually start training quads properly, and hard enough (key), you definitely should gain strength in your quads.

If you do proper bracing and don't train beyond your capabilities, there is no reason why you should get hurt. If you have short torso and long legs like most of us tall people, then you will never have a upright squat, it's simply impossible due to our leverages. The weight must be balanced and our point of balance will always be more forwards, which is why for quads you want to go for the options where we can be more vertical/upright like high bar or even better front squat, or some other variation. But we won't ever be nice and upright like the Chinese olympic lifters 😅
