@@superhawk1k382 what makes these units so special is the quality of the circuitry. These units could record with the same type of quality that a high-end home deck could record with. They use a disk drive capstone with a servo controlled motor which is very accurate. It's only a couple belts in it I used for rewind and operating the tape counter etc also features Dolby noise reduction and the pro version had XLR inputs. They were heavily used by radio reporters back in the day because they are workhorses they could run off of a couple of d batteries all day long. They could operate under all conditions your mini desk would fall apart before one of these would. Mini desk is a very fragile format get any dust in there while it's being recorded the dust will get on the desk it'll grind into the recording head. Yes I said recording head because mini disc is magneto optical it uses a magnetic head the laser just heats up the recording layer to erase the previous content and then the recording head records using a magnetic signal very easy to disrupt it. Try recording a mini desk when you're bouncing around in a car or on a train or in any of the other areas where these tape recorders were used. now I don't know why these units sell for the kind of money they sell for but they sell for stupid money I wouldn't pay that for it but then I wouldn't pay anything for a mini disc either and I've had many many this machines given to me. Mini disc is a compressed format. I would take a portable dat any day over a mini disc.

Even if they know it's worth lets say $150 , for most people its not worth the time to try to sell it . Vinyl records are getting harder to find though as people are figuring out that they are worth money , especially the children of the grandparents as a house is getting cleaned out . At thrift stores when people ask why I'm buying records I kindly say they are pretty much worthless but I like to collect them to keep as many shoppers/flipper uneducated about them 😉

I replied that they were phishing for fool's and i was not that fool, they all need major work to get operational and if the heads are shot good luck. That's my limit for broken stuff. What a great find! A couple of years ago I was lucky to get a TC-D5M for free from a friend who worked at a radio station where they got rid of some old stuff. Mine is really beat up and in cosmetically in far worse shape than yours but still plays amazingly well. This video reminded me that I haven't used it in a while and it probably still had batteries in it...well, I was right and since nowadays crappy batteries leak within a year or two they already caused some damage to the cover of the battery compartment which is now heavily corroded. Luckily the unit itself was not damaged and I managed to clean everything out. Reminder to everyone out there: DON'T leave any batteries in your radios or tape players when you don't use them!

Maybe the demand for high-quality cassette recorders will someday convince the market to produce them again.

I know they're going to last me 15 to 20 years so I'll drop some bucks on them. But something that's already worn out forget it not worth anything that's about what I'm prepared to pay. i'm hoping you read comments and i'm hoping you can help me too. i picked one of these units up off of ebay for an unreasonable reasonable reasonable price, it was in reasonably good condition and i found out that there was a loose screw / bracket causing the pause button to be askew. and after a little bit of patience i was able to straighten the record level potometers. i've been pretty happy with this as it has been my first official cassette recorder as I always only had cheap playback only ones. This was sort of a splurge to get one before they disappear move. which brings me to today... I was transferring a cassette and i was onto the second side as I heard "pop" 1 minutes later I heard "pop" I immediately thought it sounds like capacitors popping but everything continued working so I finished the tape to find... the amazonbasics batteries had exploded they were not my first choice but they were still good and came with the unit. my question I was using a 6V power adapter negative polarity as specified and it seems to put that voltage on it to the battery compartment! Is this normal? because at least with every other device I've used the battery should be disconnected when the power adapter is plugged in. Unfortunately the case which was in really good condition by the time I got to it, it had eating the paint away of half the battery cover. I've cleaned and cleaned and alcohol and I believe stabilized and then touched up with some black nail Polish. well I'm slightly annoyed but everything is still functional.

Update. When they say use only the Sony adapter they mean it! I figured out what happened. The universal adapter I was using did not have the correct tip which did not fully engage the DC jack switch causing it to both over charge the batteries and run the device. Annoying. It uses a "M" following the RadioShack adapter plug standard And that seem to have been the best fit. However I am so paranoid at this point that I don't have batteries and adapter at the same time and I want to incorporate a relay into the small remaining space to prevent this from ever happening. Which will have the side benefit of correcting the polarity of the jack to center positive the way it should be!

I wonder if it's possible to grind or "re-polish" the head? It wouldn't break it any worse. Maybe you can find a machinist nearby who would be willing to try a fun project to try.

When the head wears the gap becomes wider as the metal is worn off. There is no metal left to close the gap. No amount machining can bring the metal back. The high frequencies are permanently lost with that head.

Yup was there looking over a few things and the guy came out of the back with a cart of stuff. I grabbed it literally right off the cart. Walked to the checkout and got an extra 10% off. Seniors discount. So with tax it was 10.20. Now I don't think of myself as a senior but aparantly I am.

Try to record on Type 1 tape, if this unit plays well, it should records well too. Some Type 2 tapes just don't hold new records as good as they used to.

@@12voltvids 2nd video @37.34 "The record level is set to maximum for the right channel" It's strange. Have you tried to record type 1 cassette at this recorder? Have you tried to record this cassette at another deck? If you haven't, there's a chance that this is just a bad tape. Honestly, I don't think that Maxell XL II is a problem, I just can't tell it for sure.

I laugh at some of the ridiculous prices people think things are going to go for on eBay. Let me tell you a story about a guy I know that thought a piece of equipment he owned was worth a lot of money. With a high reserve and doesn't sell. For things then have a reserve over $150 eBay charges 2% of the reserve price. So if you put something up with a $500 reserve it cost you $10 to list regardless whether it sells or not. Guy no head his piece of equipment up for almost a year with a $500 reserve. Eventually some knucklehead with more money than brains bought it but at the end of the day the seller paid over $300 in fees to eBay. Another person whose equipment that I serviced called me up and asked me if I wanted to buy their tape deck from them they wanted $2,400 for a cassette deck I said good luck. Don't know whatever happened to that one but there's no way in hell that an old Harman kardon cassette deck is worth $2,400 but if some fool gives them that all the power to him. Now to me this deck doesn't have a lot of value because I will never use it. It'll sit on a shelf probably never see the light of day again. I will replace the worn head and put it in storage. Unless someone offers me the moon for it and shows up with cash in hand.
