Well I wrote my first piece for full orchestra while still studying in the conservatoire, on a small tablet/pc, using Finale... The screen was also partially broken. Doing the parts for the musicians was especially painful. Now I have a laptop and I wish to upgrade but I don't have a space for a monitor at the moment, same for the 88 key controller, which technically have sitting in my grandparents house, but I work with 5 octaves keys instead. It all comes down to personal needs and compromises I think.

We share a lot of those but 2nd generation Dorico Pro by the guys who originally developed Sibelius is a fantastic piece of software and have never regretted switching to it from Sibellius after years as a user. Most MIDI keyboards can utilize USB nowadays, and you can get separate adapters to convert from 5-pin in the event that isn't the case so MIDI isn't necessarily that important in a preamp

This was great Saad...thanks for the detailed explanation of your setup. I also think it is highly commendable to tell your students to put down all of their ideas the old fashioned way on manuscript paper...it's so important to not only plan the layout of works, but it helps you see your ideas which can be useful in developing them across the work...time to start saving up for the other stuff!!!

I started using Sibelius in 2002. I stopped using it when Dorico came out with Dorico 2.5. Dorico is an absolute game changer. There are so many reasons to switch. The number one reason is how much less time is spent on fixing and adjusting parts. Speed!! Workflow!!

Learning curve...... oh yeah!!!@@saadhaddadmusic Sit down with your copy of Dorico and copy all of these steps that John Barron lays out in this video kzitem.info/news/bejne/r6JuuWelf6mmn6g . My first project on Dorico took me about 3 times as long as it did with Sib. With each successive project I got quicker. I think I am almost twice as fast as I was in Sib. Their forum and Facebook pages are VERY responsive with help. AND you don't have to pay $200/year, like Sib. They average a version upgrade every once every 1.5 years-$100. You don't have to upgrade. Their upgrades are quite substantial. I won't ever go back to Sibelius, the only time I do is when a client wants to revisit a chart that I did for them when I was using Sib.

Excellent video 👏🏻 I began composing as a hobby and started out with manuscript paper and a piano. Now I’m using Muse score 4 and I kinda like is as a free program, but once when I become familiar with how the process works I’ll try out other programs to expand my resources. Thank you so much 🤙🏻🎶

Lilypond is another great notation software that is free and open source. You enter your music as plain text and the program engraves a pdf and/or midi from that text file. Handy if you like a different way of typesetting music. Great video.

@@saadhaddadmusic @a_blaser Thank you for mentioning Lilypond. The Lilypond introduction page has examples of Lilypond's range, including orchestral scores, etc. Lilypond works well with text editors like VSCode, which is useful for large projects. The printed scores can be quite beautiful. If you use high quality paper, they look like Henle. Thank you, Saad, for the helpful video.

Nice job. I do have one comment about MuseScore, unless they have done something new, it is not a good tool for jazz composition. Sibelius and Finale understand swing, MuseScore will do 12/8, a natural swing is not part of it as of the last time I looked - 6 mo ago? There are TONS of free tools in the PC universe, VST's and instrument romplers that let you produce great music for pennies.

Hi, Saad! How much orchestral samples are loyal to real sounds to the point that I can rely and be confident in playing with different blending of instruments? There are so many nuances within each instrument, and how they can match with other instruments, that studying orchestration and getting aware of all of those, makes me insecure about how well those samples will give me a loyal sound of different timbres, articulations and so on.

I don’t find they are very useful in general, especially for concert music. But when I’m working alone day after day on a composition I want to hear something a little more adequate than the general basic midi or Sibelius sounds 🙈

@@saadhaddadmusic But would you say that, as i'm learning to match instruments (for example, writing a chord to be played by one basson, two flutes and two clarinets), virtual instruments are reliable in sounding how, or closely, it would in real world?

Wait, so you need an audio interface? You can't just connect the Midi cable to the keyboard?
@bahlalthewatcher4790

The way Saad has it set up is Keyboard->Midi cable->Audio interface->USB cable->Computer. Some keyboards (like the M-audio one Saad mentioned) have USB output, but it's that weird USB-B one that printers sometimes have, so you'd need to find one of those cables to plug the keyboard directly into the computer without an interface. I'm not sure if many computers have a MIDI input port these days. Plus if you're hooking up microphones and other inputs (eg an analog signal from a guitar cable), some of those might need to be converted to a digital signal, plus you might start running out of USB ports on your computer.
