Thank you for this video. Your gear is awesome! You have confirmed for me the wisdom of waxed canvas! Wool? I have loved wool since the earliest days of my youth. Knives? There is no substitute for a good knife. It is worth whatever you have to pay to get it. (I made my own knife. Over forty years of use, still going strong. 440C Stainless steel. My Son will inherit it.) The pain of poor quality will be felt long after the pleasure of low price is gone.

Popped over to see this and enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful gear! 🙂👍 Can I just say that while I get the allure of the old time asthetic and whatnot, I couldn't help but notice you seemed maybe a little harsh on new materials - nylon and "crappy goretex" etc. I'm in my 50s and live in Northern Ontario (real northern, btw). Even I can recall a time I couldn't afford anything goretex, and would have loved to own a goretex windbreaker in, say, moss green... I am happy that the old school asthetic makes getting out more enjoyable for so many, but I'm pretty sure many of those old timers you're honouring would love to have some of the modern materials you're scorning. (I still have gear made out of wool and canvas and leather - where it works best for me - so I still understand the value and appeal.) However, from my own journey: Nylon emergency 5x7 tarp vs a chunk of plastic or bulky Canadian Tire tarp. Lighter and newer overbuilt packs (my current day bag is a helikon tex bergen and you'll never get me to give that up - its as tough as any canvas bag I've used). Modern knife steels. Folding silky saws... (Man, I'd have loved one of of those growing up.) Lightweight rain gear. Stainless steel cookware (haven't switched to ti yet...) vs cheap aluminum mess kits and pots from home. Modern boots with goretex. Tougher boats and lighter canoes. GPS (even compasses have improved over the years) Communications (Smartphone and SPOT locator)... The list, for me anyway, is pretty lengthy. No disrespect intended. Just giving another perspective.
@careenaalexis
Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t take that too seriously…. I just did a whole video on ultralight gear. They all have a place in my gear rack. My only reason for saying anything somewhat derogatory towards them is the fact that they rip, tear and get burnholes so easily. And with goretex, once the coating wears off it’s a done deal, goes into landfill and you buy a new one. So yes the wastefulness behind all the plastic based products bothers me, so I’m a huge advocate for the lifetime reuse, easy-to-maintain gear that doesn’t easily rip, burn and tear and if it does it’s easily patched or sewn.

It seems that there are so many places in Ontario to go bush crafting and have open fires. Here in Manitoba not so much, there is basically nothing unless you go to the Whiteshell at the Ontario border, there are a couple trails you can go on and camp overnight but your fires have to be in approved fire boxes. @careenaalexis
Жыл бұрын
I haven’t experienced this yet. But this happened to me on a job as a bricklayer with my hammer and to get through the job I soaked the head in water for the wood to swell. It will work the same with a hatchet in the field and get you through the trip!
@thevirginiabushcrafter8833

@@careenaalexis Thanks. One more question. I've heard to insert a small "nail" between the head and handle to get rid of the looseness. I carry an Estwing axe or hatchet because the handle is tubular full tang; no head to become loose. However, if mis-used the handle could bend. Also, with the Estwings, they are heavier. What are your thoughts on the Estwings for a Bushcrafter. Thanks Again!!

Love all your gear except for the axes,don't get me wrong i'm a huge fan of Husqvarna (chain saws that is). I'm sure it's a great axe but it's for sure a knock off from Gransfors Bruks. Husqvarna is more than likely a sponsor but doubtful they can compare to there Swedish forged (time proven) axe they are designed after.
@careenaalexis
Жыл бұрын
As I said, none of this is sponsored, and I bought both my axes full price from amazon. GB is overpriced and overrated, husq axes are highly underrated. Same Swedish steel quality just without the fancy fit and finish. They have held up amazingly well for me and I beat them to hell, and I have no reason to talk them up. Believe me I tried and tried to get a sponsor out of them and they have never ever looked my way. Anyhow, this video was not about the axes, it was about the leather ask masks y friend made for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts tho! Love chatting gear

@@randallteal6408 I’ve been extremely impressed by the hardiness over the past 5 years with my husq axes for sure. And ohh Swift, best canoes on the market hands down!!! I have the solo prospector and the solo keewaydin and I adore them both. Prospector is a great all around boat, very sturdy and easy handling. The kee cuts water a little more since it’s narrower, and this applies to both the solos as well as the tandems. Great boats for sure.

Just watched this video because I was interested in gear for the wilderness to hopefully be the first person to bring back a Bigfoot who holds the secrets to the the Government's cover-up of the existence of 👽's. (aliens, if you didn't get that) But anyways, yeah.. my buddy is wanting to do something similar to your wonderful scenic peaceful outdoor time. Away from peeps. Oh, and I'm jealous how you can get a fire going faster than me. Even when I am using a lighter. So I really enjoyed all the items, tools, and my favorite.. the spice pouches. 👝 👜. Yes, gotta have spices! I actually think that the key to getting a Bigfoot to trust you is Spices. But I don't think I'm Omniscient though. So, thank you for sharing what is out there to prepare for all us wilderness adventures out here who appreciate you. 😊
