April 9, 2022 - Today we hiked 14 miles up to the third highest point in the Smokies, Mount LeConte (6,593 ft) in 10 inches of snow. We started from the Rainbow Falls Trailhead (originally was gonna be Alum Cave Trailhead but the winter storm warning prompted park officials to close Newfound Gap Road). There was a solid coating and light snow falling when we started out but the snow rates and totals increased the higher up we went. Shortly after we passed Rainbow Falls we entered into the fog and were soon surrounded by rime ice. The last 0.6 miles to the top were the steepest, but also the area where snow totals increased significantly. The spruce-fir forest at the top was insanely beautiful, with rime ice coating the trees. Measured 8 inches at LeConte Lodge, with probably an additional 1-2 inches at the summit.
