I’ve noticed that the passion we have for gaming can spread to others around us, my finance knew nothing about games when we met and now she’s not a “gamer” but she will sit with me and watch me play for hours, she gets deep into the story as I do, and gets just as excited as me when I get a new title to play, I think it speaks to the love and passion we have as gamers that we can share our excitement for gaming with others and end up turning them into fans or even gamers themselves ! I haven’t gotten her to play with me yet but she will eventually, until then I know I have my own personal fan cheering me on through my virtual battles/journeys.

Old game dev here. It is weird how some (old) people like to be on their high horse and gate keep what is “acceptable” entertainment. As if the medium matters for what people find fun. Some like sports, movies, TV, reading, painting, playing a musical instrument, board games, card games, etc. But as soon as (video) games comes up that “must” be for kids. These people are completely clueless that *everyone engages in play,* regardless of age.

@@MichaelPohoreski I’m not even a casual gamer. I just keep up with this stuff out of boredom and potentially one day seeing a ps5 available for purchase. I don’t understand how people can make fun of gamers when they are apart of an explosive industry.

@@ritzkola2302 The 4 pillars of entertainment is spot on! (Most?) Old people still view video games as “for kids” completely clueless how games have the opportunity to teach situational awareness, problem solving, cooperation, communication. I.e. L4D, Rainbow Six Siege, FFXIV dungeons, etc. It comes down to what they are familiar with when growing up. My parents didn’t grow up with movies, TV, or sports so they thought those were a “waste of time.” They grew up with music and card games so those were “acceptable”. Remember how Bridge used to be REALLY popular during the 1930s and 1940s? Now notice how it taught the same lessons mentioned above! As my parents mellowed they slowly warmed up to other forms of entertainment - probably due to how they provided opportunity for family bonding. e.g. We would get together with my uncle and grandma for supper on weekends and occasionally watch James Bond on TV. Family Time watching movies is how movies became “legitimized”. Games were mostly a solo experience for the first 30 years (1970-2000) so older people weren’t exposed to games as a family. Young adults in their twenties to forties grew up with Nintendo, etc. so video games are seen as natural.

@@MichaelPohoreski Yup. That’s the older generation. And it’s somewhat how us 90 babies look at certain aspects of social media although we’re much more open to adapting. Which is likely due to how much technology advanced in or lifetime vs how slow it advanced for prior generations. The issue is a lot of women in our generation also look down on men who game. It’s weird. Because those same women will spend on putting other peoples hair in their heads, or plastic surgery, or spend all day scrolling through social media. Then demean dudes for gaming. The later generations of girls born years after the 90s are much more in tune with Gaming, heck many of them do game. It’s just the 90s chicks who are kinda stuck

Oh, number one... A few years ago we pugged a healer for our WoW raid. She did well and we brought her into our guild (I was an officer at the time, main tank/raid leader so I spent a lot of off time explaining fights to her or running weeklies). Found out she lived about 2 hours away and exchanged phone numbers (like you usually do with raid members). A year after I stopped playing wow I get a friend request on snapchat, apparently she still had my contact and added me. We met up, and have been together for almost 3 years now. Almost poetic that I'm out tanking the day and she's there to heal me when I get home. Even while I hear her snoring so loud I could barely hear this video with headphones on... Loved how important the color pallet was to a system and most importantly how many colors can be displayed at a time. The sega genesis could do 61 colors at a time and I thought that was the shit lol. But now we have things like ray tracing, 4K, 8k. AI, massive online games and communities. The amount of information that can be tapped on games is staggering too. I still have a huge stack of electronic gaming monthly magazines that I had to rely on for the latest info and because of no internet It was the only way to keep in touch.(I do miss the eager anticipation of the next issue though). It’s truly breathtaking the amount of progress there has been in just the 40 years I’ve been playing.

Another Misconception that gets to me: people see gamers staring at a screen barely reacting and think it's all mindless and is only negative. They don't see that inside our heads, it's like the CIC of a warship during a frantic engagement. We seem unresponsive because it takes so much mental energy to play at a high level. And no benefit? Please! I actually learned how to say no to buying video games, because of the inventory systems in video games that made me really evaluate the value I'd get out of an item. That line of thinking has translated into the "real world" where I evaluate things I might want to buy, and have passed on things because I came to realize that I wouldn't get much value out of it really. Also, I'd argue that my time spent playing League of Legends has increased my reaction time, as well as my ability to multi task, evaluate situations, and anticipate them in a way that helps me tackle problems before they become big ones. Games CAN teach skills that help outside of games just via their basic mechanics.

_Metal Gear Solid_ (PS1) was definitely a game changer! The attention to detail was crazy (good.) I still remember the first time I saw it. A bunch of us game devs all gathered around a TV and our collective jaws dropped the first time we saw it. I would also add _Halo: Combat Evolved_ and now _Elden Ring_ to that jaw dropping list as well. _Guardian Heroes_ would be a notable runner up for me. (Other games were technically impressive such as _Doom_ and _glQuake_ with its transparent water but MGS1 is in an altogether different class.) It was weird that the pretentious film critic Roger Ebert made that ignorant claim: _“ Video Games can never be art”_ - as if he could gate keep what medium(s) art was “allowed” to be in. It was obvious he didn’t understand the first thing about games or game development. Games contained: * textures * music * writing * code * gameplay But that idiot still couldn’t understand how a thing with _multiple mediums_ could be art. Computer Science is a nexus (or superset) of Mathematics, Philosophy, Engineering, Psychology (and a few other lesser fields as morality and legal) which explains why games are probably the highest form of art. Movies probably are the next closest thing.

My biggest pet peave as being an older gamer is when other parents assume since I play video games, that I know or love the game their child is playing... Like just cuz I play games doesn't mean I like fortnight or Minecraft.... That's like me asking another adults who enjoy movies that they also enjoy all children's movies as well.

Im 51 and an avid gamer and have been since I got the Atari 2600 back in the 80s. The whole mentality of games just being for kids is really just stupid, I have a whole circle of friends my age age and we are all gamers. My siblings and I got together and just bought my mom a gaming laptop for her birthday (she is 73) and she is enjoying it. She finished Call of the Sea the other day and I just walked passed her in the lounge playing Yoku's Island Express (she loves pinball). So yeah gamers come in all age groups. Anyone who thinks its just for kids has been living under a rock for the past few decades.

My Husband and I actually met because we both played Tabletop RPGs and met on a Discord server for our fave one. We pretty much played the same console games and those helped us maintain our relationship during the Pandemic when we were in an LDR situation. I never understood Gamer-Foreveralone Syndrome; but I think a lot of that probably started with the Nerd vs Jocks thing and also all the incels that got heavy into gaming. Alsp, saying this makes me sound young but I am likely older than Falcon. :P

Lot of great points made, my biggest one for me growing up was family not knowing that multiplayer games can't be paused and also you're #1 point but more for the reason that it was meant to be a standin for being unhappy in life. As if that's how society should put their own self worth based on relationship status, pretty cringe idea. I have high standards don't go saying yes to anyone who shows up.

I'm 43, have been a gamer basically my whole life, ever since Intellivision and Atari. It cracks me up when I'm playing online and always get comments about how old I am. I guess I never got the memo that there was an age limit. Sometimes younger people even scoff at the idea and assume that because of higher age you lack skill... yet, think about it, I've been gaming my whole life on almost every platform that has ever existed since the 80s, that would be a poor assumption to make. 🙂

I have the solution for you regarding the decline of writing in TV. Watch...foreign...television shows. The writers for German, Norwegian, Portuguese, Mexican, Korean, Spanish, Brazilian, (this list just keeps going) are operating on an entirely different level than the American film and television industry. I promise you. If you start watching the available content on Netflix that was made for non-American audiences, you will see that we are only just entering the golden age of television now. It's just naturally happening outside of the influence of old corrupt and stagnant American apparatus.

Yeah number four is true. Every time I play an RPG like Fallout Skyrim or Mass Effect I always play as the hero. I just can’t help it. I mean yeah it’s just a video game 🎮 but still every time I make an evil decision(just to see what happens) I can’t shake the guilty feeling that I have(and reloading a save to do the right thing) lol 😆. 🎮 . So yeah I have never done an evil Playthrough for any game.

I’m a gamer now in his 30s, still playing for at least 10 hours weekly. I found more satisfaction from games as compared to my previous dates and decided to maintain my relationship profile as ‘single’ ever since. Asian communities generally don’t appreciate gamers, so I found myself in difficult times explaining to surrounding people about my choice of a gaming life. Even to these days, I still have trouble communicating with my parents on gaming stuffs. I don’t know if they don’t understand about ‘multiplayer’ or they simply choose to ignore about it. So, I rather spent my holidays alone more often nowadays, to avoid the situation escalates at home.

Sherlie is amazing and I still plan on playing when I'm her age...in less than a decade. Let's see, I bought hubby an Apple IIe in 1987. I don't remember what the first game we bought, probably Populous. First add on was a math coprocessor, so I could speed up El Fish. We were stationed in the UK at the time and took a hop to Ramstien to buy memory at their BX computer shop. Couldn't quite afford enough to get it to 1 MB. Still playing all these years and will until we die.
