I not only grew up solidly in McDonaldland time frame, my son is old enough to have enjoyed the portion where the indoor playgrounds and Nintendo videogame stations were in full swing. I miss it terribly. I guess it's hard for the younger generation to understand, but McDonald's was a destination and experience then. Choosing which character themed areas to sit at, having Ronald actually come see you during lunch, all the collectable toys and glasses, the amazing playground.. during my childhood McDonald's was THE place to have your birthday party, it was that popular. Now it's like eating at a some boring office waiting room. Half the time you don't even get to speak to a human other than for them to hand you a bag. I read an article recently that said when they brought back Grimace for his "birthday" to promote a new shake, sales went up for the entire fiscal quarter.. I think they are really missing the boat on how nostalgic and popular these characters are to a large portion of their customer base.

I miss when things were fun. Going to McDonald's as a kid was an experience. It was fun, whimsical, and a delightful Jolly good time. They had an indoor playground. It was always the highlight of going there. I can't believe that the people who took over McDonald's changed. They just took my consumerism for granted. I haven't gone to McDonald's nearly as much as I used to. I've gone to McDonald's maybe 5 times in the past 15 years. And the food tasted better then. The only things that taste good now are the mcnuggets. Kids today won't ever have that wonderful feeling of whimsy going to McDonald's that we had. Making great lifelong memories. Instead, it feels like an office building, or a Dr's waiting room. What kid enjoys that? So sad that they took their customers for granted. I actually worked at McD's for 11 years, in Canada, back in the 80's. And at the time, it was the best places to work at, due to all the employee perks (such as, a free meal per shift, and 2, if you worked over 8 hours, as well as all the pop you could drink, during your shift - then there were the paid for, monthly activities, such as, roller skating - where they'd hire out the local roller rink for a whole night, for our crew, and parties at Halloween, etc. - Yep, LOTS of free perks - And for each thing we did, the WHOLE crew of the store went, as they'd bring in extra people from other stores to run our store for the night, so NO ONE had to miss out on the fun). And Ronald and the gang were an integral part of the store, as was the fact, that back then, there was actually a crew member, per shift, who's entire job it was, to take care of the cleanliness of the lobby (and nothing more). Yep, back then, the motto was, Q. S. C., Quality, Service, and Cleanliness, and it was taken VERY seriously, and our crew was like a family. It was SUCH a great place to work as a teenager. Fun fact: did you know that in the McDonald's cookies, the Grimace had 4 arms as well, they just slightly smudged out the bottom set, but they were still visible (don't know if your McD's had these, but they were a small box of McD's character, in cookie form, kind of like animal crackers). Now all of the fun seems to have been striped out of the franchise, in an attempt at making the place, just another Starbucks, which is SO sad, and I really feel for the people who work there now, as it just doesn't seem to have the same kind of fun atmosphere, that it did back in its heyday :(

The Krofft lawsuit is a bit more complicated. The Krofft brothers had been asked by an advertising firm working for McDonalds to work on ads for McDonalds. The firm cancelled them and decided to develop their own characters, which were close to what the Krofft brothers had presented. There were also two trials involved. The first was for a smaller amount of about $50,000 but it was appealed which let to the larger lawsuit. It's believed that any additional profits made the the ad campaign were lost with the lawsuit. But McDonalds did use the characters afterwards, just not in ads. Although for what little the Kroffts did they got a disproportionate amount and it was the ad agency and not McDonalds that they should have sued. It did hurt their reputation though and they never were as successful afterwards. Ironically, so many puppets today look like Muppets but nobody would think of suing them over it.

I grew up in Europe and Asia and was never allowed to watch television as a child so I never saw the ads. But once when I was perhaps six or seven years old visiting cousins in NYC I saw adverts featuring the Hamburglar, which as I understand it was a puppet to just couldn't get enough of McDonald's hamburgers. Those images embedded themselves deeply in my psyche and I had nightmares and lucid dreams. The first time ever ate at McDonald's was drive-through when I came to the US for University and I couldn't understand why a company would spend so much money on these images to sell hamburgers. But then again these images became iconic, great marketing strategy, but I remember those nightmares!!😮

Here in the UK in the early 2000s Ronald was in some adverts ( one about house safly and another about respecting your mother" with a spoof of the Song Da-doo-ron-ron. Except in said adverts it was "We do Ron Ron" 😅

First of all, great video Minty! Second of all I remember growing up in the 90’s and having a used copy of the Ronald McDonald sega genesis game and I absolutely loved it! Such a cheesy fun game.

I would love to see the characters like Mayor Mcheese, and the professor make a comeback. The pirate captain I can see Mcdonalds finding a use for in commercials. In fact, I'm surprised they have not found a way to bring the pirate back for commercials when the pirates of the Caribbean movies were being released.

0:15 Mister Minty! "Ronald MACdonald [...] enticing kids to McDalonald's" That has to be my absolute favorite, of your intentional mipronunciations! You obviously know, but just don't care! It's just perfectly tongue-in-cheek and wink! It's like knowing that Jerry Lewis is going to have to say Murmelman or Wellenmelon, and you know he's just gonna screw it up! Yes, Minty! I just compared YOU to the King of Comedy... and I mean it! You truly are a master of comedic arts!

Can't say much for the food at McDonalds (people in my area have called it "barf burgers" for generations). But, I can say that I've had good service and experiences with the people who've been working in every one I've been to. I was visiting a friend many years ago, and the nicest lady working the counter was worried that I didn't appear to be happy enough. I'm one of those people who internalizes a lot of emotions, and am not a morning person. But I did make sure to let her see me smile as we were leaving and thanked her for her concern.

There is a person who is unknown that played Ronald. He was a clown for Ringling with Coco. His name is Earl Cheney. His clown name is Mr. Clown. He played Ronald for years on and off whenever they needed him. He eventually owned a magic shop in Las Vegas and made props, magic tricks, and stage illusions for all the headliners on the Las Vegas strip. He’s still around, though his magic shop isn’t. My parents are professional clowns, and have known Earl since I was really young. He’s incredibly kind, and full of knowledge amd fun stories. He’s forgotten about outside the clown world. He’s always the real Ronald McDonald to me.

Mac and Me was a bad movie. But the bad movies of the past are better than the Star Wars movies and other Disney crap that they are making today. At least Waterworld was a new thing and not a remake of some movie that was good the first time around.
