It got flack because ti openly criticizes the materialism Christmas had become by the 1980s...Kids were all about what they were GETTING for Christmas and not what they were GIVING for Christmas...so critics hated it I believe because of this...its not a feel good movie until things get set right in the end...its a reminder of what Christmas is really about.

This movie shaped my idea of what Santa Claus was as a child. We still watch it every year. I can't help but feel that he froze to death in the snow... and the elves brought him back to life to be Santa Claus. Adds a bit of a tragic element to it... with a good end of course... but the idea that he would sacrifice himself like that would make a really good legend.

Another fun fact, which I think is just REALLY awesome, is that this movie was the first time that a team of eight reindeer was put together and trained to work as a team. I've heard that's not something that reindeer tend to do naturally in the wild, and that it's almost impossible to get even three or four of them to work together. Also additional music trivial, 'Santa Claus: The Movie' has been associated with The Radio City Rockettes since the movie's release and at least through the mid-'90s. I can't exactly remember how, since I was a kid at the time and I can't find any information on Google, so I'm not sure if the movie was used in the advertising for the yearly Christmas show, if they used 'Christmas All Over the World' in the show, or if it's some combination of both. All I remember for sure is that it was a big enough cultural impact that we heard about it all the way here in Michigan (Broadway/NYC theatre news rarely made it out of New York and into national headlines during the '80s unless it became a HUGE deal that really caught people's attention - eg: 'Les Miserables' or Lloyd Webber's 'Phantom of the Opera'). Does anybody else remember The Rockettes using this movie in their Christmas show?

Finally we went and talked to the theater employees and they said that they weren't doing a 9pm showing of that movie that night. Just think: If Burgess Meredith/Mickey hadn't been killed off in "Rocky III", then we might have had Fred Astaire as the Ancient Elf!

Shame they didn't pick Brian Dennehy, he would have gone up against Rambo one more time & lost again.

The worse christmas movie EVER made? How much crack was that critic smoking? But seriously this is in my top 5 favorite holiday movies of all time and this is the best Santa Claus ever portrayed on film!

One of the few times my entire family went to a movie together. I enjoyed it very much and will always consider it a fond Christmas memory with my family.

OMG! Thank you so much for making this! I'm now 54 and I STILL love this movie! Notice how much Kirt Russles take on Santa in his new show looks a heck of a lot like his 80's counterpart?
