I watched this in the cinema and loved it. I think that the 80s were just choc a block with so many comedies that the critics were unduly harsh, as well as the audiences. I remember seeing films like All Of Me with Steve Martin, Mickey and Maude with Dudley Moore to massive comedy blockbusters like Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop....but there a snobbery about comedy pre Pet Detective/Scary Movie which kinda signalled the end of that era of comedy. Films like A Fine Mess (Blake Edwards romp starring Ted Danson and my Canadian cousin's classmate Howie Mandell who apparently used to get stoned under a bridge with her and talk to an orange) to The Three Amigos were scalped by all, the latter becoming a cult classic to many today. Thanks for remembering these two and putting it out there, it is always a positive thing to remember these two...Richard was a diamond guy, I strongly suggest watching the HBO original film Jojo Dancer Your Life Is Calling, a moderately accurate tale of his early life and career, very funny and memorable...

Great job on this one Minty. I LOVE this movie, although Stir Crazy is my favorite with Wilder and Pryor. Just a few things I'd like to say. First, it was many years after first seeing this film that I felt like I should rewatch it, and upon that second viewing I was like, "Holy crap, is that Kevin Spacey? I didn't remember him being in this." So, I appreciate you mentioning that a young Kevin Spacey was in it. I think most people didn't realize that because he was so young and not famous yet. Also, for your number 5 you said Gene Wilder still had some preservations. I think you might have meant reservations. But regardless, thank you for sharing his concerns over the way those with disabilities would be portrayed. I never knew that until now. Thanks again Minty. This was a great movie.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil is an absolute timeless masterpiece on so, so many levels. Writing, screenplay, casting, cinematography, performance, timing, editing, even the soundtrack, to name but a few. Even now in this supposedly 'modern' and 'progressive' era, 'we' as a society, still largely seem to struggle to appreciate this 'on-mass', other than the few (thousands of) 'devotees' whom actually take the time to absorb its important subtleties, comments and messages loosely hidden under the outwardly 'brash' (and painfully hilarious) scenarios presented. Successfully tying these together into a coherent and very entertaining film storyline, an achievement in it-self. The critics' past harsh comments and it's 'modest' initial financial success are more of a sad indictment of the poor state of societies general attitudes and responses over the years, rather than a true reflection of the quality of work. The sheer magnitude and competition of 'quick return' big name films released in the same year, did not help. In years to come, more enlightened societies will perhaps grant this film the reverence it so dearly deserves. Right I'm off to watch this again, and tomorrow, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, (again).
