Initally dedicated to ensure day/night transatlantic communication between American Forces engaged in World War and the US government in Washington, this radiotelegraphic station was at that time the most powerfull of the world. It was built in Croix d'Hins near Bordeaux in collaboration between the US Navy and France. It was actually only finished after the War.
A team of 750 US Marines was sent to France early 1918 to build the eight 250m high towers.
US Navy provided the towers and the transmitters.
France designed the antenna system, built the antenna bases, the buildings (actually a full village) and the power supply.
Station was destroyed by the germans in 1944.
The last tower (used by fire service) was destroyed in 1953.
