16.3b/C1 Clarification: Player Not Always Allowed to Take Embedded Ball Relief If a player’s ball is embedded in the general area but neither the reference point nor any part of the course within one club-length of the reference point is in the general area, the player is not allowed to take free relief under Rule 16.3b. For example, free relief is not allowed if: a ball is embedded at the very base of the lip, wall or face above a bunker, the spot right behind the ball is in the bunker and within one club-length of and not nearer the hole from that reference point, there is no part of the relief area that is in the general area. (Clarification added 12/2018) The point is that the player will have to take unplayable ball penalty relief and not free relief as per this video. You cannot drop a "long way away".

Hi Brucie, You are correct that if there is no part of the relief area within the general area then you cannot take free relief (although that is not the situation shown in this video). Also to clarify: you can never "drop a long way away" - the only scenario where you may be taking relief outside the relief area is if your ball will not come to rest within that relief area in which case you would be the ball at the nearest point (within the general area and not nearer the hole) where it will stay at rest. Check out this video kzitem.info/news/bejne/tXmwmqFsqKiVrGU which takes you through all the scenarios for this type of situation, including the one the clarification refers to.

Don’t you also get 1 club length from the area you marked, left or right?

As long as the Other Drop is NO Closer to the Hole, which simply means the New Distance of the Ball to the Hole is Equal or Greater than the Original Distance to the Hole.

if it rolled into the bunker why would you get to place it? It's still within a club length

The embedded ball is not in the bunker as it is not touching the sand - it is in the "General Area". Your relief area must be in the same area of the course - if the ball has rolled into the bunker then it is not in the general area and so it has rolled out of the relief area and you cannot play it from there (if you did play from the bunker you would get a general penalty - 2 strokes or loss of hole - for playing from the wrong place)

Hi. Your interpretation of the reference point in this video (i.e. ....."immediately behind the ball") is different to that in your video of the same date when you indicate that the reference point (A in your video) is directly below the back of the ball. Could you clarify please. (I think the reference point is directly below the back of the ball in this instance). Thanks. Dave

Hi David, You are correct and thank you for pulling me up on a bit of looseness in the language. Rule 16.3b defines the reference point as "The spot right behind where the ball is embedded". When the ball is above ground, this is normally taken to mean 'the spot on the ground directly below the back of the ball' as you say. There is no specific clarification on this, but we can infer this to be the case from Clarification 16.1/4 "How to Take Relief When Ball Lies on Elevated Part of Immovable Obstruction."

@@TheGolfRulesGuru Thanks for that. Also 19.2c/I supports your assertion, I think. Dave

is the nearest point of relief not where you were sitting, rather than where you dropped the ball? Where you dropped was nicer than where you were sitting, but was also further away from the point of embedding, thereby NOT the nearest point of relief.

Hi Kevin. This isn't a nearest point of relief situation. The reference point for an embedded ball is defined as the point immediately behind the ball, and the relief area is within 1 club length of, and not nearer the hole than that reference point. The relief area must also be in the general area (so the bunker is automatically excluded). Where I was sitting was within 1 club length of the reference point and so I could have dropped there, but the other way was also within that 1 club length relief area so I could legitimately choose to drop there as well.
