Cartoons have always been made for adults. Both Disney and Looney Tunes were making cartoons with adult themes, clearly made for adults and shown before adult films, since their inception. It wasn’t until they made the switch to being primarily shown on television that they became almost entirely marketed to children, at least in the United States.

Great video. One big point: animation aimed at adults has existed since WAY before the 70s. Russian animator Ladislas Starevich was making bizarre animations for general audiences as early as 1912. The Flintstones and The Jetsons were created in the 1960s, aimed at adults, and aired on prime time, not on Saturday mornings. There were lively animation companies in Yugoslavia, Germany, France, and lots of other countries doing not for kids work in the 50s and 60s. I could go on and on but you get the idea.

I've been making that point for a long time, for some reason people seem to think cartoons were made just for kids, but in the old days as well as now writers will write for children as well as adults, so they can have and audience they can sell more junk to,
@SirAndacar
2 жыл бұрын
@@shanep2369 There's not much of a distinction there. The shows both certainly dealt with adult themes; problems at work, martial relationships, dealing with your kids, etc. It certainly wasn't the kind of "family" fare we see now on the Family Channel or Lifetime.
@SirAndacar
2 жыл бұрын
@@wendellbrownbrown5968 The original theatre released Looney Tunes cartoons, Popeye, the MGM cartoons, etc., were certainly not "just for kids." My guess is that a lot of things contributed to that perception. A lot of entertainment industries were roughed up in the 50s by hysteria over "poisoning the minds of youth" with porn, communism, too much violence, and the like. Plus the modern entertainment industry wants all "product" (their word, not mine) packaged to very specific audiences. I'm working on a novel right now, and almost the first question I get is something like, "is it a young adult novel? Fantasy? Sci fi? (etc.)" But in any case it's a perception that's just plain wrong. There was animation aimed at adults all over the world waaaay before this video says there was. I mentioned Yugoslavia. They had a lively and cool animation industry for a while. The dialog was all grunting and funny noises instead of words, so it could be shown anywhere with no translation. This is one of my favorites made by Milan Blažeković in 1970. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zJV32ImVk31ejXo

Good list of material on view here and with it some nostalgic moments. Æon Flux although not being super obscure due to a major live action adaptation is worth watching. Cybersix is another show that while toned down from the source material, couldn't hide it's mature themes and probably confused the heck out of kids watching it during it's primetime run, i recall it being broadcast around 3pm. Duckman is a standout and while a cult hit never managed to get huge numbers even with Jason Alexander voice acting the main character, keep in mind this was when Seinfeld dominated primetime television.

There was a huge campaign to save The Ventures. I read somewhere Adult Swim apparently didn't make the decision to cancel, it was the new boss, when AT&T -- or whomever -- took over. Because you included Harvey Birdman-Attorney At Law on your list (Good Choice), I would have also included Space Ghost, Coast to Coast (SGCTC) because like Harvey, it took Hanna Barbara characters and turned them on their heads with adult themes. It was popular too. I was impressed at how many live, grade A/B actors they were able to get for guest interviews. Like Harvey though, the viewer had to be of a certain age (child/teen) when the original Space Ghost series ran to get the joke of SGCTC. I did, and IMHO remains hilarious to this day.
