How steep a slope can I drive my tractor on? That's one of the most-asked questions I get and the truth is, I can't tell you. There are a lot of variables in predicting how big a hill I'd feel safe in taking my tractor on. Today we'll look at 12 things you need to ask yourself before heading down a steep grade on your tractor.
1) What type of tires do I have? My opinion is that agricultural tires (with deep lugs) are the best, followed by R-4 or industrial tires, followed by turf tires.
2) What condition are the tires in? The more wear there is on the tires, the less "bite" they'll have.
3) How much air is in the tires? If the tires are over-inflated, the full tread may not be contacting the ground. I only keep 12 PSI or air in my back tires.
4) Is the tractor ballasted? I recommend that people operating tractors on hills put fluid in their tires at least. Extreme slope operation may also require wheel weights and/or a ballast box.
5) What's on the front of the tractor? A weight in the front bucket may lift up the rear wheels when descending a hill, leading to difficulty stopping.
6) What's on the back of the tractor? A heavy bush hog or other implement may push you down and make braking difficult.
7) How fast am I going? Slow down before going down slopes.
8) Is my tractor hydrostatic or gear drive? Hydrostats, in my opinion, are safer on hills. Lock them in four wheel drive and you get a lot of stopping ability when you let off the pedal. On a gear-drive tractor, your tendency is to cram in the clutch when you're in trouble and that can lead to a free-wheeling ride down a big hill.
9)Is your tractor 2wd or 4wd? Of course, 4wd is better, and leave it engaged when going up and down hills.
10) What's the center of gravity on my tractor? Some tractors sit high, making them less stable on slopes. Some of that could be due to tires, but also to the design of how the operator sits on the tractor.
11) Is the grass slick? A field wet with dew or one that's had a light rain on it can be like driving on ice. Don't drive on hills when the grass is wet.
12) Is my roll bar up and my seat belt fastened? You have a much, much greater potential of surviving a tractor rollover with the ROPsS up and the seat belt on.
