Bank holiday and a new video from you...what more could I wish for! It is so strange to see half of booktube, especially US based folks reading Jelinek when I had to read her in school a million years ago. And Kafka reminds me of school as well. I didn't think I would be interested in Monsters, because of all the reservations you mentioned, but now I am. Loved Commonwealth! So good!

i’m going back to the basics then! bunch of nonfiction on the way too, reminds me of school too haha & as long as you know what you’re getting into monsters is great! commonwealth really was so impressive - now im curious about the dutch house bc i’ve seen more people talk about that by her

@@alsopato Unfortunately The Dutch House is not that good imo. It's not bad, but much less compelling in comparison.

I felt the same about Pachinko. In many ways it was fantastic; I was so deeply involved in some of the characters stories and absolutely sobbed at a couple points lol. I feel like the first half was beautifully written and paced, and at that point I knew it would be my book of the year. But... Then I got to the second half. It was pretty frustrating to see all my favourite characters be essentially tossed to the side and forgotten, only to be forced to "care" about new ones that had been poorly introduced. The first half had been so meticulously thought out, whereas the second half felt like the author was just making up random plots to tie things together. Idk it was just disappointing in comparison. I sound so harsh but it was still a very enjoyable read. I loved it but it definitely had its flaws. Still check it out if you haven't already!!

i agree! yeah especially with how drawn out the first couple of years are it felt weird to have like one sentence tell you what happened to a character in the later parts of the book. especially when they’d tell you like ‘after ___ died, such and such’ like…. ok

Herbie Hancock in New Orleans! foods! Criterion channel! Bad Religion! etc etc I got much glee from yr daily life bits. love the description of The Piano Teacher (I only know the film, which is def deranged). I think I'm with you on the halves of Água Viva, and def agree about the short-circuiting. I get into this vortex of contemplation & panic about the concept of translating self into thought into word into sentences, and Lispector... just adds so much delicious itch. currently reading A Breath of Life which is even more overtly this vibe.

I'm going to pick up The Piano Teacher again coming up. I commented back at the end of March or beginning of April that I had started it.... but then I couldn't physically read for a bit and never went back to it. So it's one of the books I'm going to catch up on. Nice, on the the Criterion Channel subscription! it's definitely my most used streaming service- though, I do prioritize using it over others. also, is it alright if I include the clip of you rating my Letterboxd in a video of mine?

Oo excited to start Commonwealth this yr ann patchett is so good. I hope you get into These Precious Days which is her nonfic book of essays. In pachinko re all the side characters and how their story arcs don’t land, i think their purpose is to add to the mc sunja’s life story and everything she overcame. Or to contrast her descendants’ struggles w hers (like the gf story of her grandson). But im honestly surprised at everyone who loves pachinko and they’re not korean bc it’s alot of korean names and olden times and the existence of the apple+ show is seriously such a shock to me how they made this beautiful but niche story into prestige drama w the most gorgeous cinematography and historically accurate rural accents 🥲

i havent watched any of the show but it felt super cinematic to read so i bet its goooood & yeah i definitely get what you mean, at the very end when she mentions she doesnt know how to read/write it humanized her so much and was a total contrast to the lives of the two kids i see what yr sayin. i still didnt really like people dying in one sentence though like starting new time periods off by mentioning in passing ‘after blanks death’ felt like they died haphazardly idk idk - good book though
