Anne suffered for fourteen years with chronic sinus problems. Anyone who has suffered from sinus issues knows how, sinus pressure, fatigue, mental fog, and trouble breathing can affect the quality of life. As Anne describes in the embedded video she used two different types of sinus sprays two times a day to help manage her chronic sinus issues. Her sinus condition was so bad that in 2009 she opted for sinus surgery. The sinus surgery reduced her infections to two times a year but she still required the sinus spray twice a day to remain functional. Sinus surgery can temporarily help the swelling but doesn't address the underlying cause.
Thankfully a friend of Anne's referred her to our Blair upper cervical health care office in Carson to see if we could help. After taking a complete history and upper cervical spine examination we determined that her atlas and axis vertebrae were misaligned from their normal position. We then took six precision X-rays of her upper cervical spine. The X-rays allow us to look at each individual joint to determine the magnitude and direction of her individual spinal misalignment. With the information gleaned from the imaging we then made a precision correction without twisting, popping, or pulling of the neck.
Fortunately, over a course of care, Anne's sinus issues have completely resolved. As with many cases , Anne had relief in the first twenty-four hours. With that said healing takes time. Her complete recovery took several months. Anne now comes in for maintenance care to ensure her health gains remain.
How are the Sinuses Connected to Upper Cervical Spine Misalignment?
The sinus membranes are intimately connected to the neurology of the upper cervical spine. Housed inside the atlas and axis is the brainstem. The trigeminal nucleus is located in the brainstem and one of its branches is what controls the function of the sinus membranes. As a consequence, when there is an injury to the upper spine, the atlas can misalign and interfere with the trigeminal nucleus's ability to function normally.
There are many studies that indicate the underlying issue with many chronic sinus problems is nerve irritation. "In considering the neurologic aspects of nasal sinus infections, one is confronted by clinical pictures remarkable in both their variety and their extent. Many of the manifestations which have been attributed to the absorption of toxic products from the infected sinuses are not necessarily such and can be definitely traced to direct nerve irritation from the inflamed sinus membrane. What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored over time to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process. This is how Blair Chiropractic treatment can often help remove the underlying cause of many who suffer from chronic sinus problems by supporting your body in healing itself.
