"After a series of escalating tensions, the state apparatus lost control. A group of people stormed city hall, and passed a law that said if anyone in the city accumulated too much power, anyone was allowed to kill them. And then they blew up city hall." I think you may have misunderstood something about Germany as the legal successor of the German Reich. Germany is not the legal successor, it is the German Reich under a new name. From what I understand the situation with localisation of D&D in Japan was very similar. It basically didn't exist. Well, as a german native who is actually playing a SR4 Table rpg round, interesting question. My first impression would be: Shadowrun is a german product. The people who invented the game and are writing the books are germans. so this way we got a realy detailed version of our country in the SR-universe and this is somehow funny to read, play with it? I mean the places the writers descripe feel realy fitting. My hometown is implemented in this world. Even the local leisurement park has a place in this version of the future. it's fun So why do we have more products than the american market, or the rest of the world (who might have no sourcebook) maybe, because we are natives. I mean the american market might be bigger and there might be more english native speakers out there, but we are still more connected to this world. but jeah, now let me listen to your answer to this question. ps. I believe over the last decade shadowrun hasn't been the biggest pnp rpg from germany. the dark Eye has been bigger during the 4th edition here tmm.
@TheBurgerkrieg

Shadowrun is not a German game, Catalyst Game Labs is an American company. Pegasus Spiele just holds the distribution license in Germany and has created a number of sourcebooks. Many people (myself included) have advocated for the entire license to be transferred to Pegasus because they do a way better job with it than CGL.

That's curious. I am no RPG Historian or even deeply rooted in RPG community, but as far as I can remember D&D was not that big here in Brasil. Being alternative History gives the setting a layer of complexity that does not need explanation, I am realising now. For instance. We have a respectable concentration of German related people here in Brasil, specially in the South but also somewhat in the Center-West (the richest areas of our country, in fact). Anyone knows that around here, German culture has great reputation and a lot of sympathy in my country (one of my favourite youtube channels about political commentary is from a fellow who claims to be a German. by the way. The channel Caio o Alemão). Therefore, any story played in the region where Brasil is right now, specially if it includes the South Region, will probably have some German Gangsters, of sort. Is hard to think about that region without Germans. Therefore, German politics is likely to get some mention.

But then, I stopped being a free floating part of the PnP scene more than 15 years ago (meaning looking for groups outside of my established circles of friends), and back then TDE was what DnD is for the english speaking part of the world. Only some people also played Midgar, or Vampire, or Shadowrun, or Rulemaster, or DnD, or Earthdawn. Playing something besides TDE was the unusual thing.

Hmm, I love Shadowrun. I'm an avid fan of Piranha Bytes and that style of CRPG. I love the Dark Eye setting and have played both Chains of Satinav and Memoria as well as the Blackguard games. I wonder if I could apply to become an honorary German? In all seriousness, I think German roleplayers know what it's all about. I feel like American role-playing is all about coming up with the zaniest and most broken character. I prefer when role-playing serves the setting and the players can feel invested and immersed in a world that responds to their actions realistically.

In my personal shadowrun universe as a gm I have decided that the Roman Catholics don’t ordinate women, because before the timeline deviates Pope John-Paul II. has taught infallibly (see papal infallibility) in the apostolic letter „ordinatio sacerdotalis“ that the church has no authority to do that. I’m thinking about the German Catholic Church doing that instead, because it would give their conservative meta-racist church a nice bend and ties in the current real life church politics.
